This book is well done. The insights into the world of traveling health care are quite useful to someone thinking about transitioning from traditional working environments, to the always changing, and new experiences of travel work. The authors let you into their world of good decisions and the bad ones. You can truly put this book down and have a valid understanding of what the Travel nursing industry can offer. This book is insightful, entertaining, and most of all a great resource!

Whether you are an experienced "traveler", new to the profession, or considering a traveling healthcare career, this book is for you. Barry and Donna Padgett have traveled for almost eight years: from Boston to Seattle . . . from Georgia to Alaska. They have produced this concise manual based on their experiences with facilities, agencies, and other travelers. It is an "insight" into what it takes to be a successful traveler.

Prologue - A short narrative about the authors and the book.

Part 1 - What s It All About?Describes the traveling healthcare industry and how it began. It helps you evaluate your situation and decide if traveling is right for you. It includes the roles of the facilities, agencies, and travelers. Also included are the characteristics of a good traveler, advantages and disadvantages of traveling, and traveling with others (including your pet). Factors involved in filling openings, areas of expertise needed, seasonal assignments, independent contracting, and internet resources are also discussed.

Part 2 The Nuts and Bolts of TravelingOutlines the "nitty gritty" details important to every traveler: such as housing issues and options, details of benefits offered, how tax advantage programs work, contract clauses, taxes, calculating your pay items, the pitfalls of working less than full time, licensing, your 401(k), and other issues.

Part 3 Ready to Take the Plunge?Do you think traveling is right for you? If so, Part 3 gets your new career off to a good start. It helps you choose and apply to agencies, negotiate and finalize your assignment, and helps prepare you to pack up and hit the road. It also includes a discussion of bill rates and how your wages, benefits, and tax-free reimbursements are allocated. An entire chapter takes you step-by-step from leaving your permanent job through your first assignment . . . and beyond.

Part 4 Additional TopicsContains additional topics of interest such as working strikes, breaking your contract, employment testing, the future of traveling, and special California issues. It also discusses the darker side of traveling describing some "interesting" aspects of working with facilities, agencies, and other travelers.

Included are 64 pages of full color photos showing some of Barry and Donna's adventures. Featuring hardcover binding and offset printing, this quality product is a must for every traveler's library.

Parish Nursing: A Handbook for the New Millennium Review

Parish Nursing: A Handbook for the New Millennium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have recently retired form public health nursing and finally have time to catch up on my reading.
I am very impressed with this book. It portrays uniqueness of the health care industry of the 1990s in stories lived out by those working in parish nursing. It reveals colorful history of the true inner workings of the health care system of that decade.
Indeed, congregations need to be STIMULATED toward more caring ministries for the elderly as promoted in this book.

Make parish nursing an alternative to shrinking healthcare resources! Because of shrinking healthcare resources, both human and monetary, parish nurses in the future will be called upon to deal with rising numbers of elderly and the end-of-life issues that accompany aging. Parish Nursing: A Handbook for the New Millennium is a guide to designing programs that can complement a congregation's ministry priorities for senior adults, identifying strengths to reinforce and weaknesses to avoid. Stories from the fields of service capture the sweat equity and history of the re-emergence of nursing in churches. Parish Nursing: A Handbook for the New Millennium is a practical planning guide for parish nurses and congregational committee members with limited experience in program development. Suitable for use with multiple faith traditions, the book demonstrates how to take responsibility for health ministries without leaning on direction from local hospitals. Parish Nursing presents multiple practice models, intervention strategies, and methods of program evaluation responsive to boundaries and traditions of various communities of faith. Parish Nursing includes:
conceptual frameworks
program design options
outlines from field-tested training modules
program evaluation options and challenges
and much more!
In 2001, there were 35 million people over the age of 65 living in the United States—a number that's expected to double in the next 10 years. The American Academy of Family Physicians estimates that nearly 20 percent of family doctors are no longer accepting new Medicare patients. Parish Nursing: A Handbook for the New Millennium is an essential resource for nurses, pastors, and church leaders starting a parish nurse ministry to deal with the growing number of “forgotten” elderly persons.

This text is a classic--not to mention a great doorstop. It weighs so much I don't bring it to class-or anywhere else for that matter. Size aside it is an excellent textbook, informative, yet accessible. The charts and images are clear and helpful; they augment the main text. I can't speak to the additional online and CD resources yet, but thus far the book alone has served me well. A recommendation: save yourself a lot of money and get a used copy of a previous edition-the content is the same and the saving can be huge.

The biggest disappointment is the inability to download the info onto my PDA. I downloads everything but the data file and there is virtually no support to figure out the glitch. Any book of thys type that has gone through five editions has to have something going for it, and This book has many. Perhaps the most important is the writing style which is as light and casual as it can be considering the subject. The goal is, of course, to prepare the student for a career. The book combined instructional material with case histories that illustrate how a particular case, situation, or patient was successfully handled. Each chapter starts with a page entitles 'A Nurse Speaks.' Here practicing nurses relate some of their history

Ruff's War: A Navy Nurse on the Frontline in Iraq Review

Ruff's War: A Navy Nurse on the Frontline in Iraq
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Ruff's War" is a great read --- it's a true story of a nurse on the front lines in Iraq. Having been a Navy nurse myself during the VietNam war, I heard many accounts of military nurses during that war. But this is my first read about Iraq. I found it to be truly a terrific book. It was like reading Cheryl's personal diary of her every day encounters and struggles while serving in Iraq. I kept thinking that this was a relatively short time in that country. And I try to imagine what it must be like for the military who are there for a much greater amount of time. Reading about her experiences has given me a look at how much those soldiers must endure daily for perhaps a year or more. It makes me wonder how any human being can survive living in that country under those conditions and fighting for their lives and others at the same time.
Obviously, Cheryl survived to return home, landing in the U.S. under her own ability to walk off that airplane. Reading about the war, makes me appreciate more what these men and women do for our country every day. It helps me know that they deserve much credit and support for their efforts and also makes me very sad to know that there are some who only return home in body bags. I'm very patriotic and proud of our troops. As an ex-Navy nurse, I applaud all they do and am proud to read of Cheryl's "adventures" in Iraq knowing she served our country and did what she needed to do. A terrifying time indeed but she gave us insight into that war and our military's endurance and dedication.
I'm so glad I read this book. Cheryl is from my home town area, grew up in my church in PA----a home town girl "done proud". Thank you for sharing your story of inspiration and struggles. It was an amazing read.

Twenty-five years in the Navy had made Cheryl Ruff an independent, resilient, strong woman - and a master at providing patient care while serving at various Navy hospitals around the world. But nothing prepared her mind, body, soul, and spirit for what she experienced on the frontlines of the Iraq war as a member of the Bravo Surgical Company. Known as the "devil docs," they followed directly behind the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force as they entered Iraq at the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003. Right along with the Marines, Commander Ruff, the only female nurse anesthetist at the front, and the rest of her surgical team learned to endure the brutal conditions of the desert while regularly confronting questions of life and death. Working in temperatures well over 100 degrees in full MOP gear, Ruff and her team set up mobile hospital tents in the sand wherever needed. As Black Hawk helicopters brought in steady streams of the wounded, they found it impossible to maintain standard sterilization procedures, and clean up often amounted to just shovelling the blood-soaked sand out of the tent.During surgery they often wore lighted helmets so they could continue operating if the generator failed and donned gas masks when warnings were issued. These horrific conditions, coupled with the gruesome images of shredded bodies and the cries of wounded children, became Ruff's world. This is her story of the war, up close and personal. It is a story of sacrifice, survival, and courage, movingly written by a woman unconditionally dedicated to the life-saving mission of the United States Navy Nurse Corps.

Nursing Against the Odds: How Health Care Cost Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care (Culture and Politics of Health Care Work) Review

Nursing Against the Odds: How Health Care Cost Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care (Culture and Politics of Health Care Work)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nursing Against the Odds: How Health Care Cost Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care (Suzanne Gordon, ILR/Cornell University Press)is a first rate work of journalism, the beginning of a civilian audit that should have been documented by the profession itself, either in its primary practice venue (hospitals) or by its primary proponents of its own value (academics and the American Nurses Association).
Nursing Against the Odds documents not only the manipulation of nursing by the hospital industry, the medical profession and the media (reinforced by drug and device manufacturer Johnson & Johnson). It documents that nurses themselves think so little of their own contribution that they are unable or afraid to speak up when given the chance.
Nursing Against the Odds also documents the real tragedy of the hospital reengineering movement of the 1990s. This response to the challenge to health providers by the Managed Care companies to show their value in the marketplace was the wrong tactic at the wrong time by the wrong people. Michael Hammer and James Champy made a point to warn (in Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution, 1993) that the chief financial officer should never be tasked to manage the reengineering effort, simply because it was not about cutting costs but raising quality. Since the big accounting firms had the ear of the hospital CFOs this is exactly what happened. So the same folks that brought us Enron messed up hospitals and nursing so thoroughly that neither has yet to recover.
The contribution of Nursing Academia and the American Nurses Association during this cascading iatrogenesis has been less than helpful. Nursing schools teach care planning using a methodology that is largely an intellectual fraud. The Nursing Diagnosis Model demands so many mental gyrations that most students don't get it by the time they graduate. Nursing documentation in the clinical record using this method invites ridicule by other health professionals. Consequently Nursing Diagnosis does not inspire care planning and assist in documenting progress. Nursing care plan documentation is simply ignored or mindless phrases show up in clinical documents ("buffing the chart") that no one reads. Nursing Diagnosis phrases like "situational low self-esteem" or "ineffective coping" are more descriptive of Nursing's present state of affairs and its inability to assert itself as an independent profession.
While many academics look down their noses at union membership by calling it unprofessional, they forget that most professions bill for their time in fractions of an hour and produce quantifiable outcomes for their work. (Not many nursing graduates recognize the SF-36 or the FIM, common health outcome measurements tools.) Most professionals have figured out ways to protect themselves and their families, either by bargaining units or individual, enforceable contracts that protect against the hazards of their work or the vicissitudes of their employer. The fact that Nursing is unable to protect itself, and that this leaves anyone who is subjected to a hospital stay in grave danger, should be enough to give us all some motivation to put Nursing Against the Odds at the top of everyone's reading list.
Michael Newell, RN, MSN
Haddonfield, NJ

Gordon examines how health care cost cutting and hospital restructuring undermine the working conditions necessary for quality care. She shows how the historically troubled workplace relationships between RNs and physicians become even more dysfunctional in modern hospitals.

Flawless: A Novel of Medical Suspense Review

Flawless: A Novel of Medical Suspense
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not usually a fan of medical thrillers, but gave Joshua Spanogle's Isolation Ward a try and was glad I did. This guy can write! Hero Nate McCormick is a great flawed protagonist with a unique voice and someone who is easy to identify with. In Flawless, McCormick is back and Spanogle has managed to avoid the sophomore curse, returning with a novel just as good (if not better) than his first.
Nate has relocated to the West Coast to pursue a relationship with the girlfriend he reconnected with during his initial case (chronicled in Ward). He's jobless and hasn't found an apartment and his aimless state has started to wear on the burgeoning relationship. Into this state of things comes an old friend from his student days who wants Nate's help with something. But before Nate can find out what it is, his friend Murph is murdered, along with his wife and two children, plunging Nate into a complicated mystery swirling around a biotech company in the South San Francisco hills, coupled with Chinese gangsters and a series of photographs of women and men, faces disfigured by an agressive facial cancer.
Nate is warned off, his girlfriend is attacked, and several of the people in the photographs are killed in a variety of shocking ways, but McCormick just can't give up, feeling he owes something to the friend he lost track of. This is an excellent, fast-moving novel with three-dimensional, believable characters. Nate suffers for his investigation and his feelings of rage and helplessness are palpable. And his life continues to develop on the sidelines, in the manner of the best current detective fiction. Spanogle is a truly talented writer and I'm very much looking forward to his next novel. Flawless is very highly recommended!
