Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials with Time-to-Event Endpoints (Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series) Review

Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials with Time-to-Event Endpoints (Chapman and Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Often in clinical trials particularly oncology trials time-to-event are the endpoints of primary interest. The endpoint could be time of death, time to remittance, time to recurrence or something else. In the recent RE-LY trial which was a stroke prevention trial the dual primary endpoints were time-to-an-occurrence of stroke and time-to-a-major bleeding episode. It seems almost always the case that the study will involved estimating these parameters based on data the include a lot of right-censoring. So the methods of survival or relaibility analysis come to play an imprtant role. Usually if the events are rare the sample size requirement will be large because power of the test of differences between two groups is dictated by the number of events which then requires large sample size s to achieve the requisite number of events. The RE-LY trial was a noninferiority trial with three equal size treatment arms and rare event occurrences. So thid trial required approximately 18000 subjects with 600 in each group. Such trials are long, difficult to administer and very expensive. So often the time-to-event endpoint is replaced by a surrogate endpoint.
Karl Peace has edited and contributed to a very timely volume on the design and analysis of time-to-event endpoints in clinical trials. This book can serve as a text or a reference for biostatisticians and particularly those involved in clinical trials, especially oncology trials. A number of authors with a lot of experience with such trials were chosen to contribute to this volume. The first 6 chapters are introductory and mostly overviews of a particular methodology. Chapter 1 by Peace,is a general overview of the topic and an introdcution to what is included in the remaining chapters. Chapter 2 by Sill and Rubinstein introduces how time-to-event endpoint trials are designed and monitored. Chapter 3 is an overview of parametric models for time-to-event distrbution by Peace and Tsai. Chapter 4 does the same for semiparametric methods (the Cox proportional hazard model and its extensions) Chapter 5 is an overview of methods to handle categorical time-to-event data. Chapters 6 and 9 cover overviews of Bayesian methods applied to time-to-event data and graphical approaches respectively. These chapters read like they are part of an introductory text and they have large reference lists for very pertinent and up-to-date articles and books. The other chapters are mostly specialized topics such as chapter 8 by Bhore and Huque on the estimation and and testing of a change in the hazard rate in the survival curve.
I particularly like the book because it provides a refresher course that also includes new approaches or old ones that I am not so familiar with. It is a very important and authoritative text that any statistician doing time-to-event trials can rely on.

Using time-to-event analysis methodology requires careful definition of the event, censored observation, provision of adequate follow-up, number of events, and independence or "noninformativeness" of the censoring mechanisms relative to the event. Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials with Time-to-Event Endpoints provides a thorough presentation of the design, monitoring, analysis, and interpretation of clinical trials in which time-to-event is of critical interest. After reviewing time-to-event endpoint methodology, clinical trial issues, and the design and monitoring of clinical trials, the book focuses on inferential analysis methods, including parametric, semiparametric, categorical, and Bayesian methods; an alternative to the Cox model for small samples; and estimation and testing for change in hazard. It then presents descriptive and graphical methods useful in the analysis of time-to-event endpoints. The next several chapters explore a variety of clinical trials, from analgesic, antibiotic, and antiviral trials to cardiovascular and cancer prevention, prostate cancer, astrocytoma brain tumor, and chronic myelogonous leukemia trials. The book then covers areas of drug development, medical practice, and safety assessment. It concludes with the design and analysis of clinical trials of animals required by the FDA for new drug applications.Drawing on the expert contributors' experiences working in biomedical research and clinical drug development, this comprehensive resource covers an array of time-to-event methods and explores an assortment of real-world applications.

As a diabetic author Alex O'Meara had given up hope for a cure and for thirty years had to take two or more shots of insulin daily. But in 2004 he signed up for a clinical trial involving an experimental transplant - and his experience led to an investigation of the industry in CHASING MEDICAL MIRACLES; THE PROMISE AND PERILS OF CLINICAL TRIALS. It's the first book to offer a behind-the-scenes view of clinical trails and how they operate and are funded, and is key for any medical student and consumer who wishes to understand their organization and importance.

Physical Examination and Health Assessment Review

Physical Examination and Health Assessment

This required text is (for once!) not dry. Jarvis provides plenty of tactful sample questions to ask patients during interviews. The author takes great care to define medical terms within the text so I'm not constantly reaching for my medical dictionary. There is no glossary, but the accompanying student lab manual has one for each chapter. Text also includes so many more photographs than Porth's Pathophysiology textbook.

American Medical Association Manual of Style : A Guide for Authors and Editors (AMA) Review

American Medical Association Manual of Style : A Guide for Authors and Editors (AMA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. The more general goal, perhaps not stated, is to broaden the influence of those standards so they encompass more of the medical publishing community.
The book, developed by a committee of writers, editors, and publishers, is organized around five major categories, Preparing an Article for Publication, Style, Terminology, Measurement and Quantitation, and Technical Information. Each of these categories is, in turn, broken down into chapters that probe various aspects of each category. Finding information is easy, and the writers have used examples generously to make the points clear.
The first section, Preparing an Article for Publication, is, naturally slanted more toward authors and those who toil to prepare author's manuscripts for publication. There are many guidelines offering advice that ranges from preparing the abstract to preparing any of six different types of acknowledgments. Editors and copy editors would do well to review this chapter as well. The section on citing Web sites alone is crucial reading.
I suspect, but cannot prove, that many researchers will not read deeply beyond the opening chapter, feeling that the remaining sections are more the province of copy editors and journal editors. Perhaps there is some merit to that line of thinking, but all authors in the medical sciences would benefit from the copious advice here, and the better writers, I'm sure, do follow the principles of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and usage set forth in the section on style. Common mistakes, such as confusing case and patient, redundancies, and the ever so ticklish topic of race/ethnicity are some of the many points discussed thoroughly.
The section on terminology is so mind-bogglingly detailed that all one can hope to do is remember that the AMA Style Guide will almost always have the answer if you have a question about an abbreviation (how many times is something mistakenly called an acronym instead of an initialism?), medical nomenclature (a huge chapter that is the heart of the book), or eponyms (which, thanks to this guide may now be a topic we can quit haggling over).
Measurement and Quantitation continue to be a bane for many writers and editors, though without delving too much into specifics, let's say that this section will answer most questions but not without careful reading and perhaps a look at the Chicago Manual of Style for a bit clearer presentation on this topic. The chapter on statistics, unique to this guide, notes how to express confidence intervals, confirms that the word Student in Student t test is capitalized (sorry, but this text editor on Amazon.com does not display the italic t), provides a list of statistical symbols and abbreviations, and offers valuable tips about displaying equations. And those examples barely hint at the wealth of information here.
A final section on technical information provides a thumbnail guide to good layout and design of printed materials, worthy sets both of copyediting marks and proofreading marks (which are no doubt often photocopied and posted in a visible location), an excellent primer on how to edit hard copy, and a glossary of publishing terms.
If you are a medical writer or editor, odds are that you already either have a copy of this guide or you borrow one from a colleague. If you are an aspiring medical communicator, you will need your own copy so you can mark in it, attach tabs, and leave open on your desk.

Interpreting the Medical Literature Review

Interpreting the Medical Literature
Average Reviews:

A statistician might find Gehlbach's explanations a bit too simplistic, but I think it gives a fantastic overview of how to approach interpretation of journal articles. An attending asked us to buy the second edition of this book when I was a 3rd Year med student, and I still use it today teaching residents. He does an excellent job using examples from the literature to illustrate his points. And, unlike other statistical texts, the index can help you grasp topics like the null hypothesis or type I error very quickly.

Statistical Methods in Medical Research (Armitage, Statistical Methods in Medical Research) Review

Statistical Methods in Medical Research (Armitage, Statistical Methods in Medical Research)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definitely one of the most comprehensive of all biostatistics textbooks out there and it is also the best. Authoritative in style, it starts from the very basics and surveys in *detail* almost every method in biostatistics.
You will be impressed: Apart from *all* the basic techniques usually found in most biostatistics texbooks, it has two extensive chapters on Bayesian methods (with Gibbs sampling, MCMC, etc., you name it), extensive treatments of clinical trials, extensive treatments of longitudinal data and GEE models, extensive details on the bootstrap and jackknife, an extensive chapter on methods in epidemiology (risk ratios, Mantel-Haenszel method), extensive treatments of categorical data (contingency tables, logistic regression), and an extensive chapter on survival analysis. This is indeed a very extensive book.
"Statistical Methods in Medical Research" is also a book on methodology, so theorems and proofs are not to be expected. Also there are no exercises, but there are excellent illustrative examples of the various methods. While it is very descriptive, it contains enough mathematics to keep the presentation of concepts *complete*. It is also very up-to-date and has an excellent reference list.
In a nutshell, this is a work of great ambition and vision: it will cater for beginners and masters alike.

The explanation and implementation of statistical methods for the medical researcher or statistician remains an integral part of modern medical research. This book explains the use of experimental and analytical biostatistics systems. Its accessible style allows it to be used by the non-mathematician as a fundamental component of successful research.
Since the third edition, there have been many developments in statistical techniques. The fourth edition provides the medical statistician with an accessible guide to these techniques and to reflect the extent of their usage in medical research.
The new edition takes a much more comprehensive approach to its subject. There has been a radical reorganization of the text to improve the continuity and cohesion of the presentation and to extend the scope by covering many new ideas now being introduced into the analysis of medical research data. The authors have tried to maintain the modest level of mathematical exposition that characterized the earlier editions, essentially confining the mathematics to the statement of algebraic formulae rather than pursuing mathematical proofs.
Received the Highly Commended Certificate in the Public Health Category of the 2002 BMA Books Competition.

The Secret of the Yellow Death: A True Story of Medical Sleuthing Review

The Secret of the Yellow Death: A True Story of Medical Sleuthing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just over one hundred years ago, a disease called yellow fever periodically ravaged cities in both the United States and Cuba. But despite the best efforts of doctors and scientists, no one had discovered the source of the devastating illness, or the cure. Determined to put a stop to the outbreaks and save future generations from harm, a team of army doctors set out for Cuba to face the disease head on.
Working with a Cuba physician, this team conducted experiments on human subjects, so devoted to their cause they included themselves in some. Even when the results suggested their best guesses were wrong, they pushed forward. One doctor eventually gave his life to the fever, but not before he'd started the rest of the team down the right path, to finally determine the cause of the illness and eliminate it.
THE SECRET OF THE YELLOW DEATH tells the story of those doctors in a straight-forward narrative style that will appeal even to readers who are not generally fond of non-fiction. The urgent need to understand the disease, and the risks the team and their volunteers take to gain that understanding, make the book at times as suspenseful as any work of fiction. Jurmain also clearly explains the scientific facts, and includes many photographs and illustrations to bring this time in history to life.
Recommended to anyone interested in science and medical mysteries.

Principles of Medical Statistics Review

Principles of Medical Statistics

Alvan Feinstein engraved his name in history through great improvements in medical biostatistics and research methodology just to name a couple. His last book (sadly) is a marvelous trip through medical statistics made very down to earth without loosing the scientific background, but rather explaining it in a very concrete and solid way. A wonderful book for anyone who seeks information on medical statistics. A great complement to his research and clinimetrics books.

The get-it-over-with-quickly approach to statistics has been encouraged - and often necessitated - by the short time allotted to it in most curriculums. If included at all, statistics is presented briefly, as a task to be endured mainly because pertinent questions may appear in subsequent examinations for licensure or other certifications. However, in later professional activities, clinicians and biomedical researchers will constantly be confronted with reports containing statistical expressions and analyses. Not just a set of cookbook recipes, Principles of Medical Statistics is designed to get you thinking about data and statistical procedures. It covers many new statistical methods and approaches like box plots, stem and leaf plots, concepts of stability, the bootstrap, and the jackknife methods of resampling. The book is arranged in a logical sequence that advances from simple to more elaborate results. The text describes all the conventional statistical procedures, and offers reasonably rigorous accounts of many of their mathematical justifications. Although the conventional mathematical principles are given a respectful account, the book provides a distinctly clinical orientation with examples and teaching exercises drawn from real world medical phenomena.Statistical procedures are an integral part of the basic background needed by biomedical researchers, students, and clinicians. Containing much more than most elementary texts, Principles of Medical Statistics fills the gap often found in the current curriculum. It repairs the imbalance that gives so little attention to the role of statistics as a prime component of basic biomedical education.

Using and Understanding Medical Statistics Review

Using and Understanding Medical Statistics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For what this book intends, it truly is outstanding. In general, the medical researcher of any kind is at a severe disadvantage in dealing with professional biostatisticians because often the two do not speak a common language. This very readable, interesting and clearly written book gives the scientist enough knowledge to deal with most relatively simple cases in a language that we understand. With the basic principles of medical statistics made comprehensible, we are able to understand many of the simpler software packages well enough to perform basic statistical analyses and, more importantly, are able to converse intelligently with biostatistical professionals and to design studies that will pass muster. Unlike another reviewer, I do not feel that not covering SAS or other software programs is a disadvantage. No book can cover everything, and this book covers the basics and intermediate levels far better than any book I have seen, certainly better than any biostatistics book written by biostatisticians intended for other biostatisticians. This book understands that biostatistics is a tool, not a fundamental discipline, for the vast majority of scientists and is written to them. The book serves as a ready reference and review if one does not perform these analyses on a daily basis. This book should be on the shelf of every life scientist.

Ah, the shudder when a professor assigns his own book. But never fear, Steve Selvin, recipient of numerous teaching awards, is not publishing a book to line the faded jeans pocket, or to swell his balding curly head. Rather, it's just a practical way of printing his lecture notes and homeworks. Furthermore, its rare that a top research university professor has time to write textbooks, so the burden falls to the mediocre. Selvin somehow manages to find the time and save us from so many other books that screw up statistics.

This practical guide shows why the analytic methods work and how to effectively analyze and interpret epidemiologic and medical survival data with the help of modern computer systems. The introduction presents a review of a variety of statistical methods that are not only key elements of survival analysis but are also central to statistical analysis in general. Techniques such as statistical tests, transformations, confidence intervals, and analytic modeling are presented in the context of survival data but are, in fact, statistical tools that apply to understanding the analysis of many kinds of data. Similarly, discussions of such statistical concepts such as bias, confounding, independence, and interaction are presented in the context of survival analysis as well as the basic components of a broad range of applications.

Practical Statistics for Medical Research (Chapman & Hall/CRC Texts in Statistical Science) Review

Practical Statistics for Medical Research (Chapman and Hall/CRC Texts in Statistical Science)
Average Reviews:

This is a very well written and popular text on biostatistics. Altman writes for non-statisticians but the book is best suited for those with at least one prior course in statistics and those who have had mathematics through high school algebra. Emphasis is placed on the important practical problems. Good statistical designs and analyses are emphasized. The pitfalls with many published medical articles are discussed in Chapter 16.
I used this book to teach a 20 lecture course to students (engineers, clinicians and computer scientists) at Pacesetter in 1998 and at Biosense Webster in 1999 (both medical device companies that employed me as senior biostatistician). It was a good refresher course for the CRAs and engineers and it helped to make it easier for me to work with them on their statistical problems.
I have also taught a similar course to undergraduate students in the Health Science Department at Cal State Long Beach. Altman's book is a little too advanced to use as a text for that course but I did use it as a reference and covered material in Chapter 16 at the end of the course. Clear discussion of the medical literature is very important to these students and Altman does a great job!

Most medical researchers, whether clinical or non-clinical, receive some background in statistics as undergraduates. However, it is most often brief, a long time ago, and largely forgotten by the time it is needed. Furthermore, many introductory texts fall short of adequately explaining the underlying concepts of statistics, and often are divorced from the reality of conducting and assessing medical research.Practical Statistics for Medical Research is a problem-based text for medical researchers, medical students, and others in the medical arena who need to use statistics but have no specialized mathematics background. The author draws on twenty years of experience as a consulting medical statistician to provide clear explanations to key statistical concepts, with a firm emphasis on practical aspects of designing and analyzing medical research. The text gives special attention to the presentation and interpretation of results and the many real problems that arise in medical research.

The essays contained within this book are well chosen, however those supporting the use of animals in research (most of them) simply attack the articles written for the support of animal rights. Whereas the animal rights articles address the issues involved with experimentation. This book is worth reading however should be supplemented with other books to get a good knowledge base about the issues. I would suggest Animal Liberation by Peter Singer as a good start or Diet for a New America by John Robins.

I have twenty years of investigation experience in both law enforcement and the private sector. Never have I seen such a well written and insightful book on the art of investigative interviewing. Drawing on sound psychological theory and good old fashion practical nous; this book fully explains and provides an investigator with a solid foundation to work with, but the flexibility to move in any type of interview or interrogation setting. Sadly, Australian courts and those in the UK would render any confessions (criminal prosecutions) using this technique inadmissible, due to what some critics say is psychological thuggery. However, the technique has seen an increasing use in the private sector with excellent results, especially in the investigation of insurance fraud. Much like the Reid Technique, but more open and flowing - learn this excellent interviewing system and benefit from reading this investigative masterpiece.
