(More customer reviews)I'm an medical doctor with the task of teaching physiology to bright, non-medical students in a way that will be both approchable and yet complete. I find this Guyton text weaves the same magic as does his classic larger text on medical physiology that medical students have used for years. It's not only very readable, but also exceptionally well-illustrated. It would be sufficient for most medical students, but is particularly applicable for chiropractors, nurses, accupuncturists and others who need a thorough yet user friendly approach to physiology. After reviewing other texts for this purpose, I give this one an enthusiastic thumbs up.

(More customer reviews)I'm a recent graduate of a Registered Nursing program in which we used this textbook as our primary resource for Med-Surg information. I had a strong love/hate relationship with this textbook and I believe with a few revisions, it could be a truly outstanding piece of work.
First, THE GOOD: It is unarguably EXHAUSTIVE in the depth of information presented, thus it makes an excellent reference material. The explanations of diseases, disorders, treatments, and techniques are clear and concise, albeit very dense. Don't expect to be able to skim anything here - absolutely every word seems necessary, and no space is wasted. One can gain a great deal of confidence when one has absolute confidence in the validity of their textbook. Brunner & Suddarths projects that kind of reliability.
THE BAD: Such copious amounts of information require precise and meticulous organization, which Brunner & Suddarth's is lacking. Though it does not take away from the validity of the information, you might have some difficulty finding what you're looking for. More than once I noticed a disease or disorder's definition out of chronological order in the chapter, located well after the text had referred to it several times. (I was often feeling quite lost and stupid when the book would mention something I'd never seen before, only to define it 30 pages later. Once I discovered that pattern, I knew to dig for definitions before continuing my studies.) The index often seems incomplete, as I often found myself wandering for a passage I had been studying earlier, searching until I stumbled on the passcode-type keyword. Sometimes, there is no cross-reference in the index at all.
If you're a nursing student (first of all, GOOD LUCK! It's worth the trials!) or a RN who is looking for a great reference material for your profession, this textbook comes recommended. For most effective study, use it more like an encyclopedia than a standard text.

Textbook of Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Guyton Physiology) Review

(More customer reviews)I agree with the reviewer from Israel, this book is exceptional at explaining physiology. During my first year in medical school I used Berne and Levy as the text for medical physiology and I found it to be a very good text. But reviewing physiology during my second year I used the text by Guyton and I couldn't believe how well written and clear it was. Both texts are excellent and I give both 5 stars, but I would definately recommend Guyton for a first read, and then Berne and Levy.
However, not all sections in this book, like not all sections in Berne and Levy are excellent. I recommend supplementing reading in Respiratory physiology by West or weinburg, Renal Physiology by rose or vander, and GI with Johnson. Cardio use B/L-it's the best. Endocrine, Guyton is good. Nerve and Muscle physiology use Berne and Levy; and Neurophysiology I highly recommend reading Neuroscience by Purves and Essentials of Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology by Gilman.
