The House of Hope and Fear: Life in a Big City Hospital Review

The House of Hope and Fear: Life in a Big City Hospital
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Young's new book is an engaging account of life at the large mission-driven county hospital in Seattle. I spent most of my 3rd year med school rotations there myself 12 years ago and am now working in a mission-driven community health center 18 miles away. My desire to serve the poor was a direct result of the dedication from the doctors and staff that I witnessed at Harborview. Now, I spend more than half my time educating and mentoring medical students and I plan on incorporating this book into our 2nd year curriculum.
The stories are diverse: some are about incredible patients and their challenging situations - socially, medically, psychologically; some are really more about the ethical dilemmas faced by providers, and faced by patient's families; other stories point out the inequities in healthcare, while demonstrating how this institution has creatively found a way to thrive financially while serving the least able to pay.
Most importantly to me - this book is hugely interesting, well written, easy to read, hard to put down and deserving of high praise. The reason this book is so good and the messages conveyed so well is that Dr. Young has incredible skill at portraying the humanity of her subjects. This is a book of true characters; unforgettable characters. The characters are patients, their loved ones and families, the infamous ER director, a remarkable specialist in nephrology, Dr. Young herself, and the staff of the hospital. I read their stories and can picture them on a gurney, in their offices, on the wards, in the ER; I can smell the smells again; and hear the sounds in the ICU.
This text can easily and effectively (each chapter is pretty well able to stand on its own as a separate reading - though together it reads as a cohesive story) be used regularly with medical students and public health and policy students - the examples in it are perfect for igniting debate about healthcare inequality, social justice, medical ethics, professional development, difficult patients, allocation of resources and care for the underserved.

Opening with the view of an idealistic, young doctor entering her first post-graduate job at the local county hospital, The House of Hope and Fear explores not only the personal journey of one doctor's life and career, but also examines the health care system as a whole. The county hospital setting provides the author with a second education. With clear, eloquent text, she chronicles attempts made to treat those tossed aside by society along with the personal and ideological shifts that accompany this daunting task. All of the political aspects of the hospital's executive board are detailed in a gripping account of the hospital's inner workings, and a human face is expertly given to the healthcare crisis in America.

Any graduate of Tulane Medical School between 1940 and 1980 will relish every word in The Celestial Society. Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Robbins Pathology) Review

Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Robbins Pathology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no doubt majority of medical students throughout the world use this book. And I do think it is very informative. But you must be willing to spend a lot of time reading it, especially if this is the only book you plan on using in pathology. Because it takes a lot of time to comb through the huge amount of info in this book to pick out what is important for medical students to remember. So I would recommend most medical students to also buy Rapid Review Pathology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access because it is much more clinically oriented and also gives you the pathophysiology behind the symptoms which Robbins does not. I also feel that though Robbins does a good job mentioning the symptoms in a concise manner, it could do a lot better integrating the symptoms with the pathology. So I would use this book as a reference book in the truest sense. Meaning I would get a brief idea of the topic from Rapid Review or some other source and then read Robbins if you have time. But for certain things you will probably have to go directly to Robbins. For example, Robbins does a great job with the morphology, which is some what lacking in most review books like Rapid Review and BRS. I would buy the book only if you have a good amount of time to learn the subject or just really like pathology. But i would NOT buy it if you are
1. looking for a quick review, ie before step 1 (because really most of info in this book wont help there)
2. if you dont have a lot of time to focus solely on pathology and this book. Because as I said it will take time for you to read through all the info and pick out important points that you need to learn. And on top of that to be able to do this, you will first have to get use to the writing style of this book which is very different. (often study based)
As for difference between 7th and 8th editions. I personally dont think there is that much of a difference. The authors mention extensively redoing the first chapter and third. But other than that I think its mostly reorganizing and making it look more pleasing. ie cut from here and paste there. So I dont think its worth buying 8th if you have the 7th. And if you are really tight on cash I would buy the 7th. I really don't think they have changed the info at all specially in systemic pathology.

Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine: Volumes 1 and 2, 18th Edition Review

Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine: Volumes 1 and 2, 18th Edition
Average Reviews:

I love these books!!! First of all, they are beautiful! The pages don't seem to be as shiny as the previous edition, which is always a plus if you study under lamp light. Tons of illustrations, photographs and charts. The ink on a couple of pages does seem to be a little off, but nothing major. I've only just started using them but from what I've seen so far it is awesome. Latest classifications and diagnostic criteria for diseases like RA. Also the dvd seems to be very useful. I've only gone through the neurology exam, but it seems to be a high quality video with important information. I think these books are worth it, especially for the price!

Review of Medical Physiology Review

Review of Medical Physiology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I agree with the other reviewers who have pointed out that this is a "review" book and not a textbook, and thus is often too brief and condensed in style for those who are new to the subject of physiology. However, the 'classic' physiology textbooks (i.e. Guyton or Berne & Levy), while excellent when you are new to the subject, are vast tomes - each section being a hundred pages long or more. That's fine when you are starting out, but you will come to them with a heavy heart when you are pushed for time or cramming for exams. That's where Ganong's brevity is a real advantage - it covers all the major points, without "dumbing down" the science which can lead to misconceptions, and it doesn't weigh a tonne. Thus it provides a very comprehensive review of physiology (and a good deal of neuroscience) without breaking either your biceps or your bank !
What I really love about Ganong is that it is so up-to-the-minute. The knowledge that you gain from Berne & Levy and Guyton will be expanded to the next level by Ganong. Sometimes I actually pick it up and read it just for the hell of it, it's so interesting...It's also particularly strong on physiology at the cellular and molecular level, which is obviously increasingly important in modern medicine. I'm a medical student and loads of my friends rave about this book. It has also been recommended to me by a number of doctors and professional scientists. Bravo, Prof Ganong - I'm looking forward to the next edition!

Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students Review

Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students
Average Reviews:

This is good anatomy text - but by no means the best that is out there. Snell's diagrams are overly simplistic and often unclear as to the relation of other nearby structures. The text is accurate and very straightforward but lacking in some of the clinical applications. This volume is more suited for an undergrad anatomy class and even then I would suggest a different and more detailed text. Try Keith Moore's Clinical Anatomy it is far superior and will serve you better than this. Out of the dozens of various anatomy texts I own - this one comes off the bookshelf the least.

The most popular anatomy book in the world is now available in its fifth edition, featuring substantial structural, design, and artwork changes. The book provides students with the basic knowledge of anatomy necessary for clinical practice, in a modern and eye-catching manner. Designed for easy access and fast retrieval of information, each chapter contains eight distinct sections: clinical example, chapter outline, chapter objectives, basic anatomy, surface anatomy, clinical notes, anatomical clinical problems, and national board-type questions. Dr. Snell emphasizes the relevance of basic anatomy to establish a core of anatomic knowledge that will serve physicians throughout their professional lives.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Medical Pharmacology at a Glance

I was recommended this book by a former student of Dr. Neal's and after one perusal, I was hooked. It has since become my favorite medical textbook. It is so elegant and enjoyable to read that it is hardly like studying at all. The diagrams are particularly impressive, with each consolidating the equivalent of many wordy pages in the average pharmacology textbook. It is perfect when taking a medical pharmacology course, to be read "first and last" for each topic. If you're a visual learner, this one's for you.

Basic Medical Histology: The Biology of Cells, Tissues, and Organs Review

Basic Medical Histology: The Biology of Cells, Tissues, and Organs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kessel's Basic Medical Histology is much more than an overview of the microscopic structure of the human body. Yes, as one should expect, he examines all of the various cell structures, cell types and tissues. The descriptions of the microscopic structure are supported by both diagrams and color photomicrographs. However, the best part of this book is the range of transmission and scanning electron micrographs illustrating the ultrastructure of human cells and cell associations. These figures along with line drawings act as a foundation for the author's discussion of many important physiological processes that occur at the molecular and microscopic levels. This book is a valuable resource for students heading toward a clinical profession and interested in understanding the fundamental physiological activities in the human body.

This text serves to introduce students to histology. It provides a thorough and current treatment of the structure, organization and function of the basic tissue types of the body as well as the organ systems which are organized from the basic tissues. The text presents a more modern, cell biological emphasis on the subject, while also bringing out the clinical correlations of histology in every chapter. Text material is frequently summarized in the many charts, tables and diagrams that are distributed throughout the book. The organization is intended to facilitate the rapid transfer of information from the book to the student. The book is written for medical and dental students as well as other professionals who are introduced to histology during their first year of professional schooling. It is also intended to serve the needs of advanced undergraduates who often take such a course in preparation for professional schools. The book contains limited amounts of biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology and neurobiology, but a sufficient amount of material so that the student can correlate functional information to the microscopic organization of tissues and organs. Hopefully, this mix will permit maximum learning and understanding of structure-function relationships.Since the students who first encounters histology is typically introduced to a large body of information in a limited time period, we have sought to maximize the rapid transfer of information by the extensive use of summary type tables, charts and drawings. In addition, a central portion of the book contains a limited number of color illustrations which will permit the student to view and recognize stained sections of tissues and organs. The color atlas should facilitate the student's view of laboratory work.

Mostly written by physicians, essays also come from other health care professionals, patients, families, and others. In reading this work, the reader will find the hopes, fears, feelings, dreams, concerns, and clear and poignant observations of those who heal. A Piece of My Mind" (APOMM) is a weekly feature in JAMA; physicians, residents, medical students, nurses, patients, family members of patients, and others submit stories that reflect their experience and thoughts regarding health, illness, medical care, and death and dying. "APOMM" is the cornerstone of the JAMA Medical Humanities program, and surveys reveal that when readers open their new copies of JAMA each week , most turn first or second to "APOMM". Many stories are heart-warming. some are sad, some are funny, and all are thoughtful and thought-provoking.
