This text is a classic--not to mention a great doorstop. It weighs so much I don't bring it to class-or anywhere else for that matter. Size aside it is an excellent textbook, informative, yet accessible. The charts and images are clear and helpful; they augment the main text. I can't speak to the additional online and CD resources yet, but thus far the book alone has served me well. A recommendation: save yourself a lot of money and get a used copy of a previous edition-the content is the same and the saving can be huge.

Nursing Against the Odds: How Health Care Cost Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care (Culture and Politics of Health Care Work) Review

Nursing Against the Odds: How Health Care Cost Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care (Culture and Politics of Health Care Work)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nursing Against the Odds: How Health Care Cost Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care (Suzanne Gordon, ILR/Cornell University Press)is a first rate work of journalism, the beginning of a civilian audit that should have been documented by the profession itself, either in its primary practice venue (hospitals) or by its primary proponents of its own value (academics and the American Nurses Association).
Nursing Against the Odds documents not only the manipulation of nursing by the hospital industry, the medical profession and the media (reinforced by drug and device manufacturer Johnson & Johnson). It documents that nurses themselves think so little of their own contribution that they are unable or afraid to speak up when given the chance.
Nursing Against the Odds also documents the real tragedy of the hospital reengineering movement of the 1990s. This response to the challenge to health providers by the Managed Care companies to show their value in the marketplace was the wrong tactic at the wrong time by the wrong people. Michael Hammer and James Champy made a point to warn (in Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution, 1993) that the chief financial officer should never be tasked to manage the reengineering effort, simply because it was not about cutting costs but raising quality. Since the big accounting firms had the ear of the hospital CFOs this is exactly what happened. So the same folks that brought us Enron messed up hospitals and nursing so thoroughly that neither has yet to recover.
The contribution of Nursing Academia and the American Nurses Association during this cascading iatrogenesis has been less than helpful. Nursing schools teach care planning using a methodology that is largely an intellectual fraud. The Nursing Diagnosis Model demands so many mental gyrations that most students don't get it by the time they graduate. Nursing documentation in the clinical record using this method invites ridicule by other health professionals. Consequently Nursing Diagnosis does not inspire care planning and assist in documenting progress. Nursing care plan documentation is simply ignored or mindless phrases show up in clinical documents ("buffing the chart") that no one reads. Nursing Diagnosis phrases like "situational low self-esteem" or "ineffective coping" are more descriptive of Nursing's present state of affairs and its inability to assert itself as an independent profession.
While many academics look down their noses at union membership by calling it unprofessional, they forget that most professions bill for their time in fractions of an hour and produce quantifiable outcomes for their work. (Not many nursing graduates recognize the SF-36 or the FIM, common health outcome measurements tools.) Most professionals have figured out ways to protect themselves and their families, either by bargaining units or individual, enforceable contracts that protect against the hazards of their work or the vicissitudes of their employer. The fact that Nursing is unable to protect itself, and that this leaves anyone who is subjected to a hospital stay in grave danger, should be enough to give us all some motivation to put Nursing Against the Odds at the top of everyone's reading list.

Haddonfield, NJ

Gordon examines how health care cost cutting and hospital restructuring undermine the working conditions necessary for quality care. She shows how the historically troubled workplace relationships between RNs and physicians become even more dysfunctional in modern hospitals.

From Detached Concern to Empathy: Humanizing Medical Practice Review

From Detached Concern to Empathy: Humanizing Medical Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an outstanding treatise of the philosophical and ethical engagement between physician and patient. Working to move beyond standard medical school training approach of "detached concern", physician & philosopher Jodi Halpern argues for a progressive empathic stance, reasoned carefully through Kant and Descartes, enriched by psychoanalytic and psychological frameworks, but always grounded in her own experience with patients. This is a careful thinker and academic scholar at work here who has scoured the relevant literature and developed her own trenchant strategies for improving medical care. Designed for practicing physicians but provocative enough to appeal to philosophers and bioethicists. With up-to-date index linking research in medical anthropology, nursing, neuropsych and psychotherapy, as well as analytic mind/body philosophy. This is an author to watch out for.

RNotes: Nurse's Clinical Pocket Guide Review

RNotes: Nurse's Clinical Pocket Guide
Average Reviews:

This flipbook is perfect for first year nurses because it presents valuable information in a easy to flip, erasable pad. The book has everything from lab values, CPR techniques, assessment data, insulin regimens, tables of meds that counteract each other, and I/O figures for measurement. I used this book a lot for labs during nursing school and liked flipping through to remember basics that would slip my mind. Its a great present for any nursing student or first year graduate. The book includes all ages from babies to the elderly, and presents infomation for all types of nursing. Its a great book also because pen marks wipe away by rubbing it off with alcohol (which is in every RN's pocket). The Rnotes also have other makes that are more specific but this is great because it encompasses a wide range of topics.

Tending Lives: Nurses on the Medical Front Review

Tending Lives: Nurses on the Medical Front
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This best-selling nurse-author has created another exceptional book -- a powerful collection of realistic experiences from a diverse group of American nurses. Each chapter is written in realistic, first person narrative style, that takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride from scenes in a psychiatric ward, to the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing. The author wants the reader to experience "the soul of nurses as they go on about their business of caring," a goal she brilliantly achieves. She borrowed from real-life incidents, and based many scenes on events that she had seen, or that were sent to her by contributors. Echo Heron refers to nurses as "proven heroes," and invites us to "come, take a walk in their shoes." She walks us through exquisite stories that were submitted by thirty-nine different contributors, as well as two of her own personal experiences as a critical-care nurse. Every chapter portrays a different nurse, identified by a fictitious name, who is introduces by a brief, personal portrait. Here are two examples: (Ellen) --"We get so much from the patients...they touch us deep down...They break our hearts, change our lives." (Kate) -- "...there are two kinds of patients who stick out in your mind -- those who might have died if it hadn't been for your intervention, and those who would not have died with dignity if it hadn't been for your intervention." The author shares each vivid scenario while sparing no detail. She takes the reader from tears to laughter in seconds. The short chapters facilitate reading in short increments of time. Because it is intense, reading only one or two chapters at a time will enhance appreciation of each emotional exposé.While doing research for her book, Ms. Heron contacted about four hundred nurses from all fifty states, one hundred permitted an interview, and less than half of these allowed their stories to be published. Many were apprehensive about reprisals, and one even insisted on being interviewed in disguise. As Echo Heron writes, "when a person becomes a nurse they sign on for life...there is a...spirit, a depth of soul... unique to the nurse." She describes nurses as "nitty-gritty hands-on people... Those who choose this profession are...as front-line as front-line gets." This book is for "the millions of nurses worldwide who dedicate themselves to the art of healing," in spite of the turmoil and transitions in healthcare today. This book is recommended for anyone considering nursing, definitely prescribed for those who are already working "on the front line," and for those who had been there at one time. Because of the vivid detail, this book might be too intense for the faint-at-heart or those unfamiliar with the nursing profession. It was my pleasure to relive pieces of my own nursing career as I shared this well-written book. This roller coaster ride was well worth the trip. I am inspired to continue writing my own stories and compiling stories for my own book about nurses, and anyone who was ever "touched" by one. I can't wait to read Echo Heron's next creation!

I am also a first year nursing student and the first fundamentals book we used was so useless and hard to read I hated doing my homework. However, this book is so easy to understand and use, especially with the study guide which is also wonderful. I would not trade using any other book for this one. Trust me, you'll really understand what is being talked about.

Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing (Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing) Review

Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing (Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a recent graduate of a Registered Nursing program in which we used this textbook as our primary resource for Med-Surg information. I had a strong love/hate relationship with this textbook and I believe with a few revisions, it could be a truly outstanding piece of work.
First, THE GOOD: It is unarguably EXHAUSTIVE in the depth of information presented, thus it makes an excellent reference material. The explanations of diseases, disorders, treatments, and techniques are clear and concise, albeit very dense. Don't expect to be able to skim anything here - absolutely every word seems necessary, and no space is wasted. One can gain a great deal of confidence when one has absolute confidence in the validity of their textbook. Brunner & Suddarths projects that kind of reliability.
THE BAD: Such copious amounts of information require precise and meticulous organization, which Brunner & Suddarth's is lacking. Though it does not take away from the validity of the information, you might have some difficulty finding what you're looking for. More than once I noticed a disease or disorder's definition out of chronological order in the chapter, located well after the text had referred to it several times. (I was often feeling quite lost and stupid when the book would mention something I'd never seen before, only to define it 30 pages later. Once I discovered that pattern, I knew to dig for definitions before continuing my studies.) The index often seems incomplete, as I often found myself wandering for a passage I had been studying earlier, searching until I stumbled on the passcode-type keyword. Sometimes, there is no cross-reference in the index at all.
If you're a nursing student (first of all, GOOD LUCK! It's worth the trials!) or a RN who is looking for a great reference material for your profession, this textbook comes recommended. For most effective study, use it more like an encyclopedia than a standard text.

Prof. Falvo has produced a book that clearly outlines not only the medical concerns, but the very real psychological aspects of chronic illness that are frequently misunderstood.Specific examples are used throughout the book and it is quite readable to someone who is not a medical professional like myself. The author shares her insights and experience to provide the groundwork for trying new approaches.
The book also cites numerous references for someone who is interested in pursuing additional research. I can certainly recommend it for anyone interested in the topic.

There is nothing worse than pulling out 2 books in the middle of lecture and then trying to find a chapter or section with the rest of the class. It was difficult to put both books in my Jansport back pack, and it was difficult taking them out without spilling everything else! Do yourself a favor and just by the single volume to save yourself a hassle. Content wise, there are some sections that go nicely into details, and then there are sections that come short on explanations. I guess you will need a library of nursing books to get the whole picture.
