The Human Body Book (Book & DVD) Review

The Human Body Book (Book and DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best mass-market human body books available on the market. DK (Dorling Kindersley) has published yet another marvelous eye-opening jewel. This book's 3D digital art and design is what separates it from other human body books. This hardbound book also contains a durable vinyl jacket (not paper jacket) and an interactive DVD.
Unlike the other previously-published DK Human Body books, like the pocket-sized blue-covered Human Body book, this book has 3 distinguishing features:
1) Amazing 3D computer-generated digital art, complemented with high-quality photographs. Some of the best features about this book are the amazing digital art, book design, and overall aesthetic impression.
2) Detailed, up-to-date extensive text that covers human anatomy, physiology, and diseases. The text is much more detailed and extensive than most other DK Human Body books. There are also a lot of "infoboxes" and some very helpful tables and charts.
3) An interactive DVD (for computers) containing computer-animated clips of the body. There are also anatomy atlases of the organ systems, which displays names of specific parts when the cursor is rolled over it.
Overall, this book is highly colorful with hundreds of astonishing 3D images. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages and education levels, and it is perfect as a coffee table book, educational resource, or reference. You will NOT regret buying this book, and considering that you are buying a high-quality book and DVD together for only about $20, The Human Body Book is actually quite a bargain!

Muscles: Testing and Function, with Posture and Pain: Includes a Bonus Primal Anatomy CD-ROM (Kendall, Muscles) Review

Muscles: Testing and Function, with Posture and Pain: Includes a Bonus Primal Anatomy CD-ROM (Kendall, Muscles)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now in its 5th edition, this book has become "thee" muscle testing book to have. Who's it for? Anyone who has a need to be able to MANUAL muscle test any of the body's muscles. This would include such professionals as doctors, nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, etc.
How does the book work? Well, you look up the particular muscle you want to test, look at the picture of the test position, and then simply apply manual pressure to the limb in the instructed direction. If it sounds easy, it is the way this book shows you- included are dozens and dozens of GREAT pictures that show you precisely what to do. So, if you have a need to regularly test muscles, I highly recommend you get this book- it's a little bit more expensive than some of the other muscle testing books, but its the best I've come across so far- in fact it sits right on my desk for reference. Health professionals might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator to help get clients motivated to do their home exercise programs consistently.

Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy Review

Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy

This text was a required book in my first year vet anatomy course. I must say, the pictures and diagrams are only adequate. Meanwhile, the actual text itself was laborious to read and so full of jargon and unnecessary detail that it literally gave me a splitting headache each time I attempted to read it. Please, please, if this is not a required textbook, don't buy it! There are much better anatomy texts out there!

Clinical Sports Medicine Third Revised Edition (Sports Medicine Series) Review

Clinical Sports Medicine Third Revised Edition (Sports Medicine Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields!

The revised third edition contains 80 illustrations now in full color!

A Doody's Core Title for 2011!

WINNER OF THE HIGHLY COMMENDED PRIZE IN THE ORTHOPAEDICS AND RHEUMATOLOGY CATEGORY OF THE 2007 BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION MEDICAL BOOK AWARDS (of an earlier edition)

"A previously good textbook has just got better! I particularly like the colour coding for chapters. Sections have been updated by experts in the individual topic areas. The new illustrations are used to demonstrate principles and example exercises. Brilliant: it is difficult to praise this book highly enough as it is an excellent textbook. The new illustrations, updated sections and use of eminent sports medicine specialists as co-authors help to reassure that every effort has been made to improve this book."--BMA REVIEWER QUOTE

Clinical Sports Medicine has been fully updated from the popular 2nd edition (2000). It is even more practical, now superbly illustrated, easy-to-read and packed with substantially updated and new material. There are samples of several chapters online including the whole "Pain in the Achilles region" chapter. This book describes a completely symptom-oriented approach to treating clinical problems.

The practitioner can turn to the chapter that describes the patient presentation (e.g., longstanding groin pain, acute ankle injuries) and review the likely differential diagnoses, the clinical approach, and the full color pictures of the physical examination (physical examination for several major systems are also available as a separate DVD.

I thought this book was informative and useful for orthopaedic transcription. I had borrowed it from a doctor friend for whom I was transcribing and liked it so well, I had to have it!

A master surgeon and scholar have created the first true reference for the increasingly complex field of orthopaedic surgery arranged in easy-to-find, item-by-item alphabetical sequence. Every term--anatomic, surgical, instrumental, eponymic--used in contemporary orthopaedics is defined from the surgeon's point of view. Over 1,000 explanatory line drawings clarify the terms. An excellent preparatory tool for residents who must define terms as part of the AAOS fellowship exam.

The Complete Human Body + DVD Review

The Complete Human Body + DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Upon my first browse-through of "The Complete Human Body," my initial impression was that it was an updated version of DK 2007 release The Human Body Book (Book & DVD) (referred to as THBB from now on), but twice as large. Having spent some time to actually explore the book more thoroughly, that view hasn't changed much.
First off, this book is MASSIVE. If you've owned any of DK's other "definitive visual guides" you know what to expect. The book is broken into five main parts: Integrated Body, Anatomy, How The Body Works, Life Cycle, and Diseases And Disorders. Like the other Definitive Visual Guides, The Complete Human Body is divided into two and four-page thematic spreads. The book utilizes a combination of computer models, medical imagery, and traditional drawings in depicting the inner workings of the human body.
The biggest improvement from THBB lies in the Anatomy section, which occupies half of the book. The first section focuses on overall views of different body systems, with detailed spreads on the structure of hones, ligaments, veins, skin, etc. The Anatomy Atlas divides the body into seven main regions, each of the systems within that region depicted in a two-page spread. In the case of the skeletal and muscular systems, posterior and anterior views are provided. The depiction of muscles is especially well done, with views of deep and superficial muscles of the anterior and posterior in each region. Views of the major organs, close-ups of various structures, and MRI scans are also included in this part.
Unfortunately, many of the illustrations in the rest of the book are simply rehashed from THBB, and much of the thematic content from that book is reproduced here rearranged and rewritten. The Diseases and Disorders section is the biggest offender in that regard - at least 80% of the illustrations come straight from THBB. That's not to say this book isn't an impressively detailed reference work, and in some ways is actually superior to The Human Body Book. The anatomical illustrations are all larger, more detailed, and feature better textures, the page layouts are cleaner and easier to understand, and considering the book's size, there's quite a bit of content not found in THBB, especially in "How The Body Works."
As a visual guide to the human body and it's functions, this an excellent book, but as a revised edition of The Human Body Book, it seems a little rushed. I bought my copy of the latter in September 2007, and can't help but feel this would have been a better book if DK held off another year. If you don't already own THBB, The Complete Human Body is worth the price Amazon is currently asking. If you DO own a copy, you might want to hold off a while.

Periodontics: Medicine, Surgery and Implants Review

Periodontics: Medicine, Surgery and Implants
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This textbook, written and edited by the field's leading experts, has been needed for quite a while. It includes all the necessary information that any perio text should have---chapters on etiology, prognosis, treatment, etc---but goes above and beyond. With chapters covering complex suture techniques, systemic disease links, microsurgery, implants, medically-compromised pts, conscious sedation, and surgical principles, this text is the first truly comprehensive lesson in periodontics. The high-quality color photos set the bar high for future textbooks on the subject, and it belongs in the library of not only residents but accomplished clinicians.

This definitive book presents the medical and surgical aspects of periodontics in full color, organized to coincide with topics in the AAP's Vision 2020 Objectives. It offers strong theory and concepts, as well as highly instructive clinical practice applications. The hallmark of this book is that it directs dental diagnosis and treatment toward controlling infection and establishing an oral environment that is conducive to the overall health and well-being of the patient.Interrelationships between oral and systemic health are emphasized throughout, and advanced technologies and techniques such as oral, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and dental implant surgery are key components.
All goals and objectives of the American Academy of Periodontology's Vision 2020 program are addressed, highlighting the most up-to-date information on periodontal medicine.
Content is organized to coincide with the AAP's Vision 2020 Objectives.
Full color illustrations show the tissue colors and provide critical information about diagnosis of disease and assessment of the success or failure of clinical therapy.
Information is provided on all forms of nonsurgical and surgical therapies, including dental implant surgery and advanced surgical techniques such as guided bone regeneration, sinus augmentation, and esthetic periodontal surgery.
The chapters dealing with mucogingival surgery, resective surgery, and the basic principles of surgery essentially make up a color atlas of periodontal practice.
A comprehensive chapter on conscious sedation offers excellent content as an option for patients who want to be "asleep" during involved procedures.
Information on when and how to use antibiotics and antimicrobials adds a critical component to the interrelationship between oral and systemic health.
No other periodontal reference includes a chapter on electronic dental health records, with highly relevant content as more and more dental practices move toward becoming "paperless" offices.
A separate chapter on the role of the dental hygienist in periodontal procedures makes this the perfect reference for in-office education.
Information on periodontal instrumentation provides an excellent overview of the instruments that practitioners and their support staff use every day.

Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students Review

Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students
Average Reviews:

This is good anatomy text - but by no means the best that is out there. Snell's diagrams are overly simplistic and often unclear as to the relation of other nearby structures. The text is accurate and very straightforward but lacking in some of the clinical applications. This volume is more suited for an undergrad anatomy class and even then I would suggest a different and more detailed text. Try Keith Moore's Clinical Anatomy it is far superior and will serve you better than this. Out of the dozens of various anatomy texts I own - this one comes off the bookshelf the least.

Has become a truly established classic Text reference of PM&R, now with stunning aesthetic improvements in line with the High tech age. Lots of Color Pictures etc. With the e-edition now, makes this reference even more readily available to people on the move with a computer, essentially does away a 'baby' edition of such a text (like the 2nd edition).
Strongly recommended to anyone interested looking up topics in PM&R.
