I got this book, and followed it, mostly. If you do go on it, it's for life. It's a healthy way of eating, no sugar, white flour, pop, etc. Also, you need to eat a big breakfast, and only green carbs after 6pm. I'm glad I bought the book, my Mom is reading it now, she's 76. We heard about it on TBN, the John Hagee show.

The Human Body Book (Book & DVD) Review

The Human Body Book (Book and DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best mass-market human body books available on the market. DK (Dorling Kindersley) has published yet another marvelous eye-opening jewel. This book's 3D digital art and design is what separates it from other human body books. This hardbound book also contains a durable vinyl jacket (not paper jacket) and an interactive DVD.
Unlike the other previously-published DK Human Body books, like the pocket-sized blue-covered Human Body book, this book has 3 distinguishing features:
1) Amazing 3D computer-generated digital art, complemented with high-quality photographs. Some of the best features about this book are the amazing digital art, book design, and overall aesthetic impression.
2) Detailed, up-to-date extensive text that covers human anatomy, physiology, and diseases. The text is much more detailed and extensive than most other DK Human Body books. There are also a lot of "infoboxes" and some very helpful tables and charts.
3) An interactive DVD (for computers) containing computer-animated clips of the body. There are also anatomy atlases of the organ systems, which displays names of specific parts when the cursor is rolled over it.
Overall, this book is highly colorful with hundreds of astonishing 3D images. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages and education levels, and it is perfect as a coffee table book, educational resource, or reference. You will NOT regret buying this book, and considering that you are buying a high-quality book and DVD together for only about $20, The Human Body Book is actually quite a bargain!

An Evidence-Based Approach to Vitamins and Minerals: Health Benefits and Intake Recommendations Review

An Evidence-Based Approach to Vitamins and Minerals: Health Benefits and Intake Recommendations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is under the banner of the famed Linus Pauling Institute (Oregon State University) has it has a great foreword by Bruce Ames. Linus Pauling was one of the best thinkers of the last century and he recommended much higher than RDA / Daily Value intakes from a multi-vitamin as well as some other supplements in order to help procure optimal health.
There is no science yet to suggest that Pauling was wrong about such high dose supplementation --for example to lower blood-toxin homocysteine, the most likely cause of most heart disease, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. However, the medical world is slow embracing the evidence supporting this approach but that is changing.
This book is an important and tightly edited work that will help practicing physicians and interested lay people with factual data, pointers and references and even the most knowledgeable person will surely pick up important health information they would otherwise have missed.
This is a well organized handbook with 27 chapters for the individual vitamins and minerals and their effects, sources and therapeutic indications and drug interactions.
This book has "Tolerable Upper Levels" tables to satisfy even the most conservative physician but it must be said that this heading represents a level that prevents the most uncommon or even trivial interactions, and a level that may well be much below "Optimal Levels" as suggested by Pauling, and which are likely to promote health in the great majority of people.
The book would benefit from a "Pauling Proposed Probable Optimal Levels in Most" table and from the inclusion of chapters for what used to be named vitamin F, with the F from "Fat", i.e. the essential omega-3 and omega-6 oils, think of them as vitamins F-3 and F-6. Present intakes of omega-3s are well below adequate levels while omega-6 (linoleic acid from most vegetable oils) may well represent our most common "vitamin overdose".
The challenge of the new nutrition is figuring out the "Long-Latency Deficiency Diseases", LLDD's if you wish, caused by the insufficient intakes over time of one or several nutrients, from vitamin D and calcium for bone health, to the homocysteine-lowering trio of folic acid, B6 and B12 for heart and other diseases.
This book builds a solid foundation with what is known, it is without technical errors and it is clearly presented. Vital in a doctor's office and much recommended for the interested lay person. .....

The No Sweat Exercise Plan (A Harvard Medical School Book) Review

The No Sweat Exercise Plan (A Harvard Medical School Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Why am I writing this review? Because I felt it would be a disservice to anyone out there who was looking for a great exercise plan if I didn't rave out Dr. Simon's book. I felt compelled to let everyone know about this wonderful book that has changed my life. I was ecstatic when a close friend told me about Dr. Simon's book. I had no idea that such a book existed and I was anxious to get my hands on it. Somehow, with two children, I found the time to read the book. With two very young children, I had absolutely no time to go to the gym. I was feeling sluggish and even guilty for not exercising. After reading his book, I realized there were so many other options I was not aware of. Dr. Simon's book opened my eyes to a whole world of fitness programs that would be most beneficial to my health and well being. I learned about MY body and MY personal health needs and was able to create an exercise plan that fit into my schedule. I have even involved my four year old in some of my activities. I want to suggest to everyone to check out the section on stretching. I can't go a day without doing each and every one one of Dr. Simon's ten basic stretching exercises. They leave me feeling rejuvenated and flexible! They are simple and quick, yet highly effective.

I also have a better understanding of proper nutrition and what diet works best for me. I have made some serious changes to my eating habits, thanks to Dr. Simon. I follow the TLC diet and can say that it has made a huge difference in how I feel. I am a healthier person now and will continue to be for years and years. My life has taken a turn for the better since reading this book!!

Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals, Revised Edition: Medical Tips That May Save Your Life Review

Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals, Revised Edition: Medical Tips That May Save Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was having some pain in the esophagus while swallowing this weekend and started to freak out about it a little. Being a doctor myself I naturally didn't want to go to a doctor about it so I grabbed Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals by fellow MD author Neil Shulman. Fortunately I found out that I wasn't going to die right away and I got better with some OTC Prilosec and Mylanta. That is why I was glad to see a new revised and updated version come out that got great reviews this weekend in the local AJC paper. Here is an excerpt:
"When the little red light on your car's dashboard flashes, you know to check the oil or battery. But if one of your eyelids droops and your vision gets blurred, you might not know what to do --- or react as quickly. Atlanta physician Neil Shulman, who penned the book that became the 1978 hit movie "Doc Hollywood," is out with a new volume that aims to help you decode your body's codes.
"In the newly revised and updated edition of Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals (Delta, 496 pages), the Emory University professor provides an owner's manual-style overview of the body and explains how to read the signs of potential health danger. Shulman helps explain the differences between simple conditions and immediate health threats, such as when a pain in the tummy is more than indigestion and could be an ulcer.
"Health care is a two-way street, and the best way to make the system work better is to make people more medically literate and empower them to advocate for themselves, he said. "You shouldn't just turn over your body to a doctor and say, 'Take care of me,' " said Shulman, who describes himself as obsessively compulsive about patients."
Doug Bremner MD, author of 'Before You Take that Pill: Why the Drug Industry May Be Bad for your Health'

A Homoeopathic Approach to Cancer Review

A Homoeopathic Approach to Cancer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Homeopathic Approach To Cancer is a treasure trove of information even for those who do not believe in homeopathy. It's written by a caring Indian homeopathic doctor who comes from a lineage of homeopathic doctors (father, brother, sister) and was trained both in India and in England. The book is a distillation of his 30+ years of homeopathic practice with all types of cancer patients throughout the world and employs the case study approach. Its 9 chapters are organized by topic and are self-contained, thus can be read as separate modules if the reader wishes to do so. It's fact-based, rich in data, and demonstrates how homeopathy can work alongside traditional medical treatments, such as chemotherapy. The book is a diligent compilation of real life examples (126 cases in total) presenting each patient's profile and diagnosis, the details of their homeopathic prescription as well as the outcome of the treatment. It opens up potential new ways to help cancer patients combat their disease, hand in hand with traditional medicine. In any case, lots to gain and nothing to loose by reading it.

The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Breakthrough Review

The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Breakthrough
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a topic I'm very interested in and have read quite a bit about. So I was looking forward to reading this book. While it did contain some interesting information, it was all aimed toward supporting the authors' own products. There can be a fine line here.
For example, while The Pericone Prescription (written by Dr. Pericone who did a PBS fund raiser) also mentioned his products and supplements, it was very heavy on information. Based on that information it was possible to re-create his entire program without using any of his products. However The Gene Makeover doesn't do the same thing. I'd go as far as to say it was an infomercial, although one with fewer testimonials and more real information, yet nevertheless it was an advertisement for their program.
I felt cheated that I'd paid good money for this cosmetically treated sales vehicle. To be fair there was useable information regarding nutritional supplements that could be used, but those were not the real core of what they implied could be done. For that benefit it appeared you had to contact them. They crossed the line, and I'd never read anything by these authors again.

You know how victims and perpetrators are identified by their DNA on TV shows like "CSI" and "Law & Order." Now, that same science can help you lead a longer, healthier life. DNA-deoxyribonulceic acid-is the chemical inside your cells that carries the genetic instructions that make you unique. Aging occurs in DNA as cells replicate themselves continually in a process similar to photocopying. As the normal functioning of our cells becomes less efficient over time due to environmental, lifetyle and hereditary factors, those cells produce less accurate copies, causing malfunctioning throughout the body that results in degenerative diseases and aging. Thanks to the latest advances in genetic science, you no longer have to be a victim of your genetic inheritance. Dr. Giampapa and other researchers have developed a new concept called Personal Genetic Health (PGH). This pioneering PGH Program is based on determining what's needed to promote each individual's health and longevity. By identifying the activity level of five key groups of health control genes and then influencing their favorabole expression with nutraceuticals, supplements, exercise, and lifestyle changes, you can increase your lifespan and decrease your risk of developing certain diseases. By addressing the causes of disease and aging-and actually reversing them-this new anti-aging frontier allows you to control your health and well-being. Now you have the proactive power to optimize the quality of your life.

The Yijing Medical Qigong System Review

The Yijing Medical Qigong System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yijing Medical Qigong System: I have read literally hundreds of qigong books, and this is the first that delves deeply into the shared roots of Chinese medicine & Daoism, which is the I-Ching (Yijing). Few authors are willing to approach this difficult subject, but Dr. Friedman is able to discuss and present it in an accessible, easy-to-understand way. The book has a theory section, a practice section (which contains practical qigong exercises and meditations), and an external qi therapy treatment section. Dr. Friedman presents a unified system of healing for the self and others that is both impressive and clinically effective.

Yijing (I-Ching) theory is the foundation of Daoism and Chinese medicine, and this book explores the deep roots that they both share. Daoism and Chinese medicine both view the human body as a microcosm of the universe around us; what is happening outside affects us inside.Medical qigong is based on the premise that we can energetically affect something outside based on our intention inside.Much of medical qigong, one of the main branches of Chinese medicine, originates from the practices of Daoist shamanic healers. This book introduces a Chinese medicine healing system based on the principles of the Yijing that serve as the foundation of medical qigong and Daoist spiritual practices. The Yijing Medical Qigong System is a compilation of self-healing exercises and qi emission therapeutic treatment techniques based on Daoist medical qigong and Yijing theories. This system's approach is unique in that it focuses on the meanings of the trigrams rather than the hexagrams of the Yijing. The eight trigrams are used in innovative ways for healing the body, mind, and spirit. The Yijing Medical Qigong System is based on the premise that the Yijing theory that infuses Chinese medicine and Daoism is just as relevant today for healing and spiritual guidance it was three thousand years ago.

The Family That Couldn't Sleep: A Medical Mystery Review

The Family That Couldn't Sleep: A Medical Mystery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 1765 a doctor in Venice died of what was labeled "an organic defect of the heart's sack", but he many have been the first recorded victim of a strange disorder passed down to his many descendants into the twenty-first century. It had so many weird symptoms and was so rare that the victims were frequently misdiagnosed, often being dismissed as alcoholics in withdrawal, or as having meningitis, depression, encephalitis, and many other incorrect labels. The symptoms are appalling. The illness strikes adults who have no previous significant medical problems and may have started families of their own. A victim begins to hold up the head stiffly, and then sweats profusely; family members are terrified when these initial symptoms appear, as the others follow inexorably. The pupils contract to pinpoints, the heart goes mad with increased pulse and blood pressure, and sleep becomes impossible, no matter what drugs are used to bring it on. The victim knows what is happening until dementia takes over, followed by a coma and then death in about a year or two after the symptoms began. Nothing at all can be done to stop the progress of the illness, which is passed to one half of each succeeding generation. It is, however, becoming more comprehensible as we learn more about prions, those bad proteins. In _The Family That Couldn't Sleep: A Medical Mystery_ (Random House), D. T. Max has not only told the story of this particular illness, but also of other illnesses that are (or might be) caused by prions. It is a tale full of undeserving victims and flawed heroes, and it tells just how far we are from solving some basic biological riddles.
Proteins are what DNA codes for; because prions aren't alive, they cannot be killed; radiation, formaldehyde, and all ordinary sterilization procedures do nothing to them. You might get prions by having your DNA code for them; that's what happens in the Italian family that has Fatal Family Insomnia (FFI). That's pretty rare, but you might also get prions by eating them, as in eating cows with Mad Cow Disease. There are prion diseases of sheep and deer as well. A strange neurological disease in New Guinea called kuru unlocked some of the mysteries of prions (in this case, passed by cannibalism), and Nobel prizes have stemmed from this work. One of the frustrating parts of this story is that prion afflictions have often been brought about by people. No one intended to get any animal or human sick, but human intervention made it happen. Scrapie started afflicting sheep two centuries ago as a direct result of intensive breeding to make bigger animals. Mad Cow Disease was caused by the unnatural feeding of sheep cadaver protein to cows. Chronic Wasting Disease in deer seems to have been passed to them when sheep were held in pens used for sheep with scrapie, but also may come about when deer farms, pressed to produce bucks with bigger racks for hunters, fed the deer the same sort of sheep cadaver protein that the cows got. It also got spread when humans transported these deer to different regions of the country, a migration they could not have done on their own. We attempt to control nature, and in response, nature presents us with problems no one could have foreseen.
Max has given a clear history of prion diseases and our attempts to understand them. A surprising part of the prion story is that it gives evidence that our hominid forebears practiced cannibalism, and therefore the genes of most people show a protective trait that helps keep prions from causing disease. The positive part of the story is that we are not as ignorant about prions as we were four decades ago, and even that prion research may open up answers to possibly related neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. But what we know is overbalanced by what we don't. Max writes, "Not since Pasteur's time have researchers attempted to counter an infection knowing so little about what they are fighting." Not only that, but prion diseases are all brand new diseases, as diseases go, and some have been manufactured in the past few decades; there is no telling what completely new one will be in tomorrow's headlines.

The Healing Promise of Qi: Creating Extraordinary Wellness Through Qigong and Tai Chi Review

The Healing Promise of Qi: Creating Extraordinary Wellness Through Qigong and Tai Chi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Roger Jahnke has taken the ancient practice of Qigong - a healing meditation practice that combines gentle movement with focus, posture and breath - and has truly made it accessible to beginners. And we're not just talking about theory here: I was able to immediately begin practicing on my own with his clear instructions and accompanying illustrations. On the theory side he weaves a remarkable story using current scientific insights to support ancient Chinese concepts in a way that leaves you inspired and confident that this is indeed the real thing. The key to any meditative healing practice is actually doing the practice and this book is as motivating as I've ever read in getting me to get up and go for it. It has the feel of a companion that I'll be able to turn to for years to come, without it ever getting stale or out-of-date. The three promises of Qigong - it's free and accessible to everyone, you'll benefit if you practice, and it's easy to do - are clearly derived from the author's years of personal experience, practice and deep desire to share this wisdom with a wide audience. Many thanks from a new student.

Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health Review

Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Conventional wisdom is that more diagnosis, especially early diagnosis, means better medical care. Reality, says Dr. Gilbert Welch - author of "Overdiagnosed," is that more diagnosis leads to excessive treatment that can harm patients, make healthy people feel less so and even cause depression, and add to escalating health care costs. In fact, physician Welch believes overdiagnosis is the biggest problem for modern medicine, and relevant to almost all medical conditions. Welch devotes most of his book to documenting his concerns via examples of early diagnosis efforts for hypertension, prostate cancer, breast cancer, etc. that caused patient problems.

Welch provides readers with four important and generalizable points. The first is that, while target guidelines are set by panels of experts, those experts bring with them biases and sometimes even monetary incentives from drug-makers, etc. Over the past decades many target levels have been changed (eg. blood pressure, cholesterol levels, PSA levels), dramatically increasing the number classified as having a particular condition. (Welch adds that prostate cancer can be found at any PSA level - about 8% for those with a PSA level of 1 or less, over 30% for those with a level exceeding 4; most are benign.)

The second is that treating those with eg. severe hypertension benefits those patients much more than treating those with very mild hypertension or 'prehypertension;' the result is treating those with lesser 'symptoms' can easily cause new problems that outweigh the value of the hypertension treatment.

The third is that Welch believes it is usually more important to treat those with disease symptoms (eg. pain) than those without. For example, almost 70% of men 60-69 have prostate cancer, as well as about 10% of those aged 20-29 - a large number are better left untreated because their particular cases involve a very slow-growing form and the side-effects of treatment outweigh the benefits. Welch also reports that a study of over 1,000 symptom-free people that underwent total-body CT screens found 86% had at least one detected abnormality, with an average of 2.8. Many of these abnormalities later disappear (some cancers disappear), while others grow very slowly, if at all. Providing unneeded treatment subjects patients to unneeded pain, risk of adverse outcomes (including death), and unneeded expense.

Examples: Welch cites the example of a mildly hypertensive older man that he treated; unfortunately, while shoveling snow the individual passed out from a combination of sweating and the diuretic prescribed for his high blood pressure. Welch discontinued the man's medication. Similarly, Dr. Welch treated a patient with mild diabetes - the result was she fainted from low blood sugar (the level fluctuates around a mean) while driving just after a meal and was severely injured in an accident. Dr. Welch discontinued her medication as well.

Meanwhile, at the same time that a number of target guidelines have been tightened, the availability and capability of scanning and other detection devices to find abnormalities has also increased. For example, since the early 1990s, Welch tells us that the Medicare per capita use of head scans has doubled, the rates of abdominal scans have tripled, chest scans quintupled, brain MRI rates quadrupled, etc. New biopsy methods for detecting prostate cancer (eg. sampling from 18 points rather than 12 or fewer) also increase the number of benign 'false-positive' diagnoses, probably much more so than true positives.

Why is there so much testing? Dr. Welch attributes it to well-meaning disease advocacy groups, testimonials (eg. ex-Senator Dole regarding his prostate cancer), quality-improvement efforts that include testing as one of their criteria, malpractice awards, hospital/specialist/drug company marketing (beware of these, says Welch), and honest disagreement over its value. He's also concerned about what lower-cost DNA testing will add to the overdiagnosis problem, contending that everyone's genes will reveal heightened susceptibility to some ailments and diseases, with little that can be done despite the knowledge. The author would probably also be concerned about new Medicare requirements to provide a battery of up to 45 medical tests ("The Wall Street Journal" - 1/18/2011). That article also reports that a "New England Journal of Medicine" review of hundreds of preventive-care studies showed that fewer than 20% saved money.

Bottom-Line: Dr. Welch raises an important topic for improving health care while reducing costs. His main recommendation, more data from clinical trials showing the outcomes of choosing one diagnosing standard/method over another, is important and appropriate.

Reclaiming Our Health: Exploding the Medical Myth and Embracing the Source of True Healing Review

Reclaiming Our Health: Exploding the Medical Myth and Embracing the Source of True Healing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the past thirty years I have read about 100 books on the subject of health. Among the very best of the books I have read are two of John Robbins' other books, Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution, but I don't feel the need to review these remarkable books; they have been well reviewed by others, and I recommend you check them both out in Amazon. However, I simply had to add my voice to the reviews of Reclaiming Our Health.
This book is predominantly about the medical establishment, what has gone wrong with it, and what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones (if you can get them to listen to you). It is not a condemnation of all things conventional nor an endorsement of all things alternative. Some of the greatest heroes of the book are M.D.'s practicing both conventional and alternative therapies. This book seeks to guide us to the best of both worlds while warning us about the dangers to be found in each. However, the worst dangers by far appear to be in the conventional medical establishment where the admonition "first, do no harm" seems to have been long forgotten.
This book made me cry. This book infuriated me. It is filled with one outrage after another. But wouldn't you rather read about them than be subjected to them (or watch your loved ones be subjected to them) by not being informed beforehand? I know I would.
This is one of those rare books that is truly empowering. That's what John Robbins does so well. He does the intensive research that most of us neither would nor could do. We are blessed by his enormous contribution to mankind.
And my fellow women, you will be shocked to read some of the material in this book on how women have been treated in society and how this has influenced the way we have been treated by much of the medical community. I have shared a bit of the information with co-workers and have actually seen jaws drop open. We have not been told the complete story of how dreadfully many women have been treated in our history. It is an abomination. (Written with apologies to all of the sincerely wonderful men out there.)
Rest assured that among the very bad news of this book is a good deal of hopeful news about prevention and treatments that are out there now, but this information will probably be a long time coming to the general public. It is only through leaders like John Robbins that we are blessed to know about it now.
Read this book before you or someone you love becomes ill. Read it and pass it on.

American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (with Interactive Human Anatomy CD-ROM) (American College of Physicians Homecare Guides) Review

American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (with Interactive Human Anatomy CD-ROM) (American College of Physicians Homecare Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a frequent buyer of updated home medical books, and have pretty much seen them all. This one is quite superior! It is easy to find various medical conditions, complete in its coverage, and written in a way that the average layperson will understand. The illustrated color pictures are very well done, a rare treat, and contribute well to one's understanding of the copy. In short, it's the best home medical book I've ever seen. I recommend it without reservation.
