(More customer reviews)I only recently started following Michelle's blog and pre-ordered the book on a whim, but I'm so glad I did. I will be recommending this book to all of my med school friends. Her writing is clever and intelligent and I couldn't stop reading this account of her journey to being a doctor and a mother. As a first year medical student, I've worried about exactly the same issues that she went through. The relentless candor of this book combined with her witty patient stories makes for an entertaining read in which, for the first time, I truly felt that I understood what it's like to be a resident. Her account is inspiring, and brightens the light at the end of the tunnel for those of us who place highest priority on both our family and our work.

The comprehensive index in the third edition is easy to use. For example, information on "scoliosis" can be found on pages 235, 603, 774, 980, and 981. (Page 980 features an illustration.)
There is also a complete listing of resources for more information including addresses, phone numbers and Web sites. I particularly like the section on symptoms. You can just look up a symptom such as "back pain" and learn more about conditions that cause back pain. The book then directs you to the page containing detailed information about that condition.
I'm looking forward to what I hope will be the interactive DVD version of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book in the future.

(More customer reviews)I was rereading a wonderful old novel by H. G. Wells, "The History of Mr. Polly." Mr. Polly's father dies, and Wells says: "...the local practitioner still clung to his theory that it was imagination he suffered from, but compromised in the certificate with the appendicitis that was then so fashionable." Why was appendicitis "fashionable?"
If someone asked you to fill in the blank quickly in the sentence "The surgeon performed an _________" you would probably say "appendectomy." Yet it isn't such a terribly common operation today. Why is it the ur-operation, the one always used for purposes of hypothetical illustration. Why appendectomies?
I saw "Seeking the Cure" and dipped into it to see whether it had an answer. It did, or at least as close to an answer as you'd ever get. It was a confluence of events. I hadn't realized that abdominal surgery had once been a medical taboo, with a nearly 100% mortality rate. Antisepsis ("Listerism") and anesthesia made it safe. It had once been extremely difficult to diagnose. I hadn't really thought of centrifuges, microscopes and blood counts as being a breakthrough in modern technology, but of course they were, part of the medical technology revolution that emerged from World War I. And they made it possible to diagnose appendicitis reliably. And there was one influential surgeon who promoted the idea that it was a surgeon's disease, that appendicitis "belonged to" the surgeon. Hospitals and surgeons found appendectomies to be lucrative, and they became almost a fad; Rutkow cites a hospital in which 1/5th of all operations performed were appendectomies.
Well, I was hooked. The book fascinated me. For me, it had just the right amount of detail, just the right balance between popular storytelling and serious history, just the right blend of attention to personality, to technology, and to organizational dynamics. Rutkow interleaves the narrative with short profiles of historically important individuals--with glimpses of their personality.
I was fascinated by his description of the way hospitals in the 1920s were transformed into technology centers where patients were sent for diagnosis--to be "worked up"--as well as for treatment. Hospitals positioned labs centrally and put windows in their labs so visitors would be sure to see how up-to-date they were, much as businesses once showcased their computer facilities.
To give one example of how he illuminates history: Why did Medicare finally pass under Johnson? Because the AMA, which had doggedly opposed any form of national health insurance, was weakening. Why was the AMA weakening? Because it primarily represent generalists, and lost influence with the rise of the specialists after World War II. What did World War II have to do with the rise of the specialist? (In part) because the military decided to assign specialists to higher pay grades, thus putting a sort of institutional endorsement of specialization.
I don't know how the book would strike a serious medical historian, but as an introduction for the curious layperson like me it is first rate.

Effortlessly blending history, sociology and clinical acumen, it tells the story of how and why doctors (sometimes) avoid answering the one question their patients really need the answer to: "So what does this mean for me?". It marshalls an impressive array of data, from wonderfully human qualitative interviews with physicians, to rigorously executed quantitative experiments and surveys. All is explained in an elegant and eminently readable voice deeply sympathetic to the patients undergoing awful disease, the families caring for them, and the physicians charged with helping. This is a book that any one training (or trained) in the healing arts must read; but it is also a rare and wonderful chance for those who may one day be patients nearing death to gain some insight into what that experience is like -- and the rich possibilities it could also have.

The Cure Within: A History of Mind-Body Medicine Review

(More customer reviews)Whenever a first-class scholar, like this one, writes a careful, data-based book, which is at the same time accessible to the intelligent lay person, we must be grateful.
This volume tells us much of the history, in the United States, of the various mind-over-body schemes: psychoanalysis, Transcendental Meditation, bio-feedback, Christian Science, and others. Nobody interested in modern American history can afford to ignore this story.
But I also found the book profoundly confusing. The author wants to tell us about these movements and how they were received by the public, but she has little interest, it seems, in the truth value behind the claims of these popular movements. Does bio-feedback, for instance, really help in reducing stress ? For that matter, is there such a thing as "stress" in the sense that the proponents of these movements have in mind ? Truth or untruth are things that hold little interest for this author.
Harrington generally tells the story of the beginnings of these movements as a series of successes, and then, for some reason, time and again, "things begin to unravel," as she has to state time and again. With all her sympathies for "mind-over-body," sympathies that dominate her "narratives" (a favorite phrase of hers), it turns out, generally, and in stark contrast to her enthusiasms, that things don't work out after all, and it would seem -- though she never says this -- that it's probably best to be cynical about the whole lot of these movements.

(More customer reviews)Firstly, I have to say that Harvest is in my Top Ten List of all-time most favorite reads (and I've been a voracious reader for forty years).........This book has it all.............thrills, chills, great twisted plots, superb character development...........bad guys, good guys....kept me guessing.......and guessing.........Abby Di Matteo was a second year resident at Bayside Hospital in Boston when she was chosen to be part of the cardiac transplant team....When she discovered that a heart was to be given to a rich man's wife, rather than a young 17 year old boy who was next in line, both Abby and Dr. Chao, took drastic measures....which had immediate repercussions!Finding donor records as being falsified, and knowing that some hearts aren't coming through the correct channels, Abby starts an investigation........Since I first read Harvest when it came out in hardcover in 1996, the details and characters have stayed with me....this is a book that one can't forget..........it's an "edge of the seat" thriller, which is even scarier knowing that it's so easy for this to happen in real life.............Gerritsen's knowledge of the medical field shines through without all the jargon that we lay people can't understand! No matter where I am, at weddings, wakes, bookstores, beaches, if I see or know someone who reads, I always recommend any Tess Gerritsen book, so long as it includes Harvest!! (More customer reviews)I was having some pain in the esophagus while swallowing this weekend and started to freak out about it a little. Being a doctor myself I naturally didn't want to go to a doctor about it so I grabbed Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals by fellow MD author Neil Shulman. Fortunately I found out that I wasn't going to die right away and I got better with some OTC Prilosec and Mylanta. That is why I was glad to see a new revised and updated version come out that got great reviews this weekend in the local AJC paper. Here is an excerpt:

For the Love of Physics: From the End of the Rainbow to the Edge Of Time - A Journey Through the Wonders of Physics Review

(More customer reviews)If physics has rock stars, Walter Lewin is one. If physicist rock stars can have groupies, I confess to being one.
As I read the publisher's text about the book, I felt a little blush. Could that refer to me?! Truly, Walter Lewin's online lectures changed MY life. Sounds silly? Well it's true. Not only did I get very interested in a subject I thought out of my grasp, but I continued my education in physics. I "discovered" a lot of application of physics to my business practice. To shorten the story, I use physics in my business and my clients have benefited greatly and my career has blasted off.
Now, the book is like listening to Dr. Lewin talk. For a fan, what could be better? The videos of his lectures might be better but they are very math intense. The book is light on the math. That's good.
I do wish the book had more than than the too brief picture collection about 2/3'ds through. I would like some illustrations to go with the topical discussions. Still, overall, I love the book but that's because I see Dr. Lewin as a sort of virtual mentor. I could never afford MIT or qualify to get in to MIT. Dr. Lein's lectures opened MIT to me.
So a physics fan, and especially a Walter Lewin fan, will love the book. I hope every one of his students will buy two copies (I did)---cherish one and give the other away. Your gift may inspire the next Einstein (male or female).
The only negative? That beautiful Dutch accent, which lends itself to physics, doesn't come through in print.

OZONE: A new medical drug Review

(More customer reviews)Bocci cuts through ozones hype and gives clear and accurate scientifically proven information on what ozone can and can't do for somebody and how it should be administered(direct IV not being one of them). The price tag I think is a bit high for an amateur researcher such as myself but worth every penny. For any medical persons reading this review who is considering buying this book please note contary to FDA statements there are hundreds of studies proving efficacy of ozone therapy for all types of ailments. They are all public domain.
Ozone therapy corrects the redox system(that's the antioxidant system for layfolks)so for anybody with a chronic viral infection who has a failing redox system that is one major reason alone(there are many others) to use ozone therapy. I will repeat that - for that single fact it is reason enough to use it.
Ozone being a good negatively charged free radical will actually nutralise harmful reactive oxygen species(ROS). This is one of the biggest misunderstandings by untrained medical personnel who beleive ozone is a harmful free radical and one of the messages Bocci gets across so strongly.

It gives a short introduction at the first page of every chapter, showing the metabolic pathway and giving a short summery of the different types of metabolic defects in this part of metabolism. It's not only brief but also based on the recent publications. The very systematic structure and the much better index of this new edition is another reason why there is no day without Fernandez et al. in my clinical work.

Previous to this book he was the FIRST person to reveal the true nature of the Federal Reserve (which has nothing to do with Federal). In this book he details the history of how control of the medicinal market has been won by the FDA and the AMA (and similar organizations in other Nations), and how the healing of citizens has been put in the hands of the Government rather than in the hands of the citizens themselves. Their choices for treatment have been downsized to that of Allopathic medicine, a way of trreatment that is relatively new, only a few hundred years old, if at that, as compared to medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. This book details the methods used by the Rockefellers to control the medicinal market to their advantage. It also guarantees a level of population control....read on! You will be surprised!

(More customer reviews)The author's sister lives in Marion, so I knew this book was coming out almost a year ago and had been looking forward to it. I wasn't disappointed. This is a wonderful book, especially for people who are fans of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. The author is a criminalist and she includes a number of details involving forensic investigations, but she doesn't get so bogged down in the science that lay people would be lost or confused. Her writing style is fast-paced, fresh and exciting, although she could stand to cut down on the hyperbole a bit. Anyone who is at all familiar with the Cleveland area will recognize her locations. The characters are fresh and appealing, especially the heroine, Evelyn James, a thirty-something single mother who is dealing with a teenage daughter who is upset about her parents' divorce, while trying to solve the gruesome slayings of several young women just a few years older than her daughter. Life experieinces become tangled with the case, and the ending will have the reader on the edge of his/her seat. I had a hard time putting this book down, and finished it in 2 sessions. I envy anyone picking it up for the first time, because you are in for a surprising and exciting read.
