The Human Body Book (Book & DVD) Review

The Human Body Book (Book and DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best mass-market human body books available on the market. DK (Dorling Kindersley) has published yet another marvelous eye-opening jewel. This book's 3D digital art and design is what separates it from other human body books. This hardbound book also contains a durable vinyl jacket (not paper jacket) and an interactive DVD.
Unlike the other previously-published DK Human Body books, like the pocket-sized blue-covered Human Body book, this book has 3 distinguishing features:
1) Amazing 3D computer-generated digital art, complemented with high-quality photographs. Some of the best features about this book are the amazing digital art, book design, and overall aesthetic impression.
2) Detailed, up-to-date extensive text that covers human anatomy, physiology, and diseases. The text is much more detailed and extensive than most other DK Human Body books. There are also a lot of "infoboxes" and some very helpful tables and charts.
3) An interactive DVD (for computers) containing computer-animated clips of the body. There are also anatomy atlases of the organ systems, which displays names of specific parts when the cursor is rolled over it.
Overall, this book is highly colorful with hundreds of astonishing 3D images. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages and education levels, and it is perfect as a coffee table book, educational resource, or reference. You will NOT regret buying this book, and considering that you are buying a high-quality book and DVD together for only about $20, The Human Body Book is actually quite a bargain!

Molecular Biology of the Gene, Fifth Edition Review

Molecular Biology of the Gene, Fifth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a layman with a serious interest in biology. I read science news, especially in Nature and Scientific American, and I often find that I don't have enough background to understand articles at the level at which I want to understand them. I bought this book hoping to get that background, and I wasn't disappointed.
For example, once the human genome was sequenced, it appeared that there were far too few genes for an organism as complex as ourselves. But investigation shows that most genes occur in segments and that the messenger RNA must be cut and spliced before the protein can be formed. Often there are two or more ways the RNA may be spliced, so that one gene can specify more than one protein. Another problem is that the genome seemed to consist mostly of sections that don't code for proteins; these were called "junk". But it turns out that some "junk" DNA codes for RNA sequences that have catalytic and regulatory roles, roles which used to be considered the bailiwick of proteins alone. Articles about topics such as these used to confuse me thoroughly, but after reading this book I find them much clearer.
This book benefits from a great many illustrations and I recommend that you go through each one as you would a worked problem in a math text. Observe how the pieces fit together, how a particular group of atoms enhances or inhibits a reaction. The practice will help you to understand other things you will read later.
I called this a "reference" for good reason: I assume that I will come across many future articles which will send me back to it to fill in some background.
[Added 4 July 2006] As I assumed when I first wrote this review, I have used it for reference. I have read several books about what I call "enhanced evolution", where mechanisms that go beyond simple point mutations speed up evolution by providing more variation. For example, gene regulation, alternate splicing, and gene duplication all play important roles. I have surprised myself by remembering more than I expected to (thanks to the clarity of this book) but I have still used it for clarification.

This is an wonderful book for students of science or anyone interested in the recent history of virology. Carol Eron is an excellent writer and provides a wonderful view into how viruses (and unconventional agents now known to cause Kuru and CJD) were studied in the last century. Too bad the book is out of print. I highly recommend getting your hands on this one!

The Language of Medicine: A Write-In Text Explaining Medical Terms Review

The Language of Medicine: A Write-In Text Explaining Medical Terms
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book as a requirement for an independent study course. I wasn't required to buy the sixth edition but I did just the same and I found I made the right decision. I found the material easy to read with a friendly tone and an extremely useful presentation. The layout of the chapters and the excercises provided helped me to clearly understand, use, and learn the terms. I worked on this book without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting and I feel this book has made the difference between just memorizing material for a later test and really knowing the terms. Also, the CD-ROM that comes with this book made an excellent reference aid and a perfect way to test and reinforce my knowledge. (Clicking on the "figure" button in the multi-media program yielded some interesting surprises) As a result of using this book, I was able to achieve an excellent mark in the Medical Terminology module of my independent study course. I would recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to know their medical terms for any health related field.

Medical Virology, Fourth Edition Review

Medical Virology, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As I have made out in my title, this is the best way I can describe this book. Its small size contradicts its vast amount of information within. With respect to the other reviewer the book I find is excellent at delivering highly detailed information in the fewest words - cutting to the chase - however like the other reviewer comments, its detail can be off putting without sufficient back up by other texts. In this respect the book is probably best thought of as reference material for instant access to cutting edge information on viruses. The book also has sections that individually deal with the virus families and allow the reader to quickly access information regarding viruses belonging to each family, which is particularly useful considering the quagmire of virus names.

Medical Virology first appeared in 1970 and was immediately hailed as a classic. The Fourth Edition has been completely updated, substantially rewritten, and considerably expanded. Acknowledging that today's students possess a more sophisticated background of molecular and cellular biology, the book is pitched a little higher than was the third edition. Nevertheless, it maintains the exceptionally high standards of the three previous editions, including the now famous user-friendly style. Hundreds of instructive diagrams and succinct tables smooth the path for the reader. Extensive lists of recent authoritative reviews at the end of each of the 36 chapters simplifies the reader's entry into the scientific literature. Throughout, the focus is on fundamental principles, mechanisms and basic facts, rather than on overwhelming detail.Part I of the book, expanded to over 400 pages, comprises in effect a self-contained overview of the Principles of Virology. Part II, entitled Viruses of Humans, deals comprehensively with all the families of human viruses. Extensive coverage is given to the molecular biology of the viruses and of viral replication, pathogenesis and immunity, clinical features of all important diseases caused by all viruses affecting humans, the latest laboratory diagnostic methods, epidemiology and control, including chemotherapy and vaccines. This lucid and concise yet comprehensive text is admirably suited to the needs not only of advanced students of science and medicine but also particularly of postgraduate students, teachers, and research workers in all areas of virology. Key Features* Molecular biology of viruses and viral replication* Pathogenesis and immunity* Latest laboratory diagnostic methods* Clinical features of human viral diseases* Vaccines and chemotherapy* Epidemiology and control

Survival Analysis for Epidemiologic and Medical Research (Practical Guides to Biostatistics and Epidemiology) Review

Survival Analysis for Epidemiologic and Medical Research (Practical Guides to Biostatistics and Epidemiology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ah, the shudder when a professor assigns his own book. But never fear, Steve Selvin, recipient of numerous teaching awards, is not publishing a book to line the faded jeans pocket, or to swell his balding curly head. Rather, it's just a practical way of printing his lecture notes and homeworks. Furthermore, its rare that a top research university professor has time to write textbooks, so the burden falls to the mediocre. Selvin somehow manages to find the time and save us from so many other books that screw up statistics.

This practical guide shows why the analytic methods work and how to effectively analyze and interpret epidemiologic and medical survival data with the help of modern computer systems. The introduction presents a review of a variety of statistical methods that are not only key elements of survival analysis but are also central to statistical analysis in general. Techniques such as statistical tests, transformations, confidence intervals, and analytic modeling are presented in the context of survival data but are, in fact, statistical tools that apply to understanding the analysis of many kinds of data. Similarly, discussions of such statistical concepts such as bias, confounding, independence, and interaction are presented in the context of survival analysis as well as the basic components of a broad range of applications.

Basic Medical Endocrinology, Fourth Edition Review

Basic Medical Endocrinology, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice text for an undergraduate-level or graduate-level basic Endocrinology class. The book itself is very succinct, compact, and lightweight. Its content is trim and well-organized, and it's filled with colorful, easy-to-understand figures. The writing is lucid, fairly casual, and easy to understand, which I appreciated for a subject that is so dense with information.
The book is not extremely indepth. That's okay, though--it's self-described as a "basic" level book. It spares a student the more complicated explanations of many subjects for more advanced texts. For a student unfamiliar with endocrinology in general, this is a great book to introduce the major concepts of the field.
I'll be keeping this book for reference in later years of school!

Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY (BORON)) Review

Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY (BORON))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have bought 4 physiology books during my medical studies and i am only a second year student! And i must say, that this book is definetely the best one, if you have the basic knowledge. If you are a new begginer though, it is very very difficult to start with this book, since the explanations are very detailed and require a certain level of 'scientific way of thinking'. There are many research examples and historical links, something that a student prepearing for an exam doesn't want to waste time on. Some of the explanations are too long and complicated, that one looses the initial idea of what the explanation was about.
On the other hand, if you are quite skilfull in physiology, this is a great book. The pictures are extraordinary and very scematic and understandable!!! You definetely get a lot for your money!
So, in conclusion, if you buy yourself a simpler physiology book and get the basics from there, Medical Physiology is the perfect choise to go on expanding your knowledge with. But don't buy it as your very very first physiology book. It will just confuse and frustrate you.

And the Waters Turned to Blood Review

And the Waters Turned to Blood
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a book that I just could not put down for the life of me. I had a test a school but instead of studying, I read this book. Shocking!!!!
A compelling book that portrays the gauntlet of bureaucracy that Dr. JoAnn Burkholder had to ordeal when she discovered something in the waters off of the Eastern Seaboard. The leaders of N.C.'s DEM, and the DEHNR showed their obvious distaste for her and her work when this information proved to be threatening "the machine" of business as usual.
What's most shocking about the whole things is 1. The lengths that the health department officials will go to cover this up, and truly not deal with an obvious health crisis; and 2. THIS IS A TRUE STORY that is still unfolding today off the East Coast.
Well written and with courage. 5 - stars!
