An Evidence-Based Approach to Vitamins and Minerals: Health Benefits and Intake Recommendations Review

An Evidence-Based Approach to Vitamins and Minerals: Health Benefits and Intake Recommendations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is under the banner of the famed Linus Pauling Institute (Oregon State University) has it has a great foreword by Bruce Ames. Linus Pauling was one of the best thinkers of the last century and he recommended much higher than RDA / Daily Value intakes from a multi-vitamin as well as some other supplements in order to help procure optimal health.
There is no science yet to suggest that Pauling was wrong about such high dose supplementation --for example to lower blood-toxin homocysteine, the most likely cause of most heart disease, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. However, the medical world is slow embracing the evidence supporting this approach but that is changing.
This book is an important and tightly edited work that will help practicing physicians and interested lay people with factual data, pointers and references and even the most knowledgeable person will surely pick up important health information they would otherwise have missed.
This is a well organized handbook with 27 chapters for the individual vitamins and minerals and their effects, sources and therapeutic indications and drug interactions.
This book has "Tolerable Upper Levels" tables to satisfy even the most conservative physician but it must be said that this heading represents a level that prevents the most uncommon or even trivial interactions, and a level that may well be much below "Optimal Levels" as suggested by Pauling, and which are likely to promote health in the great majority of people.
The book would benefit from a "Pauling Proposed Probable Optimal Levels in Most" table and from the inclusion of chapters for what used to be named vitamin F, with the F from "Fat", i.e. the essential omega-3 and omega-6 oils, think of them as vitamins F-3 and F-6. Present intakes of omega-3s are well below adequate levels while omega-6 (linoleic acid from most vegetable oils) may well represent our most common "vitamin overdose".
The challenge of the new nutrition is figuring out the "Long-Latency Deficiency Diseases", LLDD's if you wish, caused by the insufficient intakes over time of one or several nutrients, from vitamin D and calcium for bone health, to the homocysteine-lowering trio of folic acid, B6 and B12 for heart and other diseases.
This book builds a solid foundation with what is known, it is without technical errors and it is clearly presented. Vital in a doctor's office and much recommended for the interested lay person. .....

I have browsed several books on herbal medicine and treatments. While all suggested herbs for various maladies - none told me how use the herb (root or flower?) or how to make the various ointments, or tinctures or what the common dosage should be. This book was the first I found that does! For anyone curious about the history of herbal medicine and what practical treatments can be used, this is the book to start with!

A Homoeopathic Approach to Cancer Review

A Homoeopathic Approach to Cancer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Homeopathic Approach To Cancer is a treasure trove of information even for those who do not believe in homeopathy. It's written by a caring Indian homeopathic doctor who comes from a lineage of homeopathic doctors (father, brother, sister) and was trained both in India and in England. The book is a distillation of his 30+ years of homeopathic practice with all types of cancer patients throughout the world and employs the case study approach. Its 9 chapters are organized by topic and are self-contained, thus can be read as separate modules if the reader wishes to do so. It's fact-based, rich in data, and demonstrates how homeopathy can work alongside traditional medical treatments, such as chemotherapy. The book is a diligent compilation of real life examples (126 cases in total) presenting each patient's profile and diagnosis, the details of their homeopathic prescription as well as the outcome of the treatment. It opens up potential new ways to help cancer patients combat their disease, hand in hand with traditional medicine. In any case, lots to gain and nothing to loose by reading it.

Living Proof : A Medical Mutiny Review

Living Proof : A Medical Mutiny
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cancer. Few words conjure up as much emotion or such fervent reaction as this one. 'Living Proof' is brilliantly written and accurately presents MGT's personal experience of facing in his own body, one of the worst forms of incurable cancer. Read of his emotions, his reactions and those of other people around him, from close friends to 'renowned experts'. He is clear and concise, and given the nature of the subject and the challenges it presents to him (life or death) about as unbiased as it is possible to be.
I confess to being biased but I've never read such a well-documented account of someone who has access to the very best resources and contacts and who records his journey toward making an immense decision about which treatment to choose in such an entertaining way.
Cancer Research is now one of the world's largest employers and if everyone involved with it read this account, I doubt that we would continue to lose so many loved ones to a disease that breeds ignorance with such spellbinding effect.
If you think you already know all the answers then read this book, regardless of whether you are 'for or against' conventional treatment. I'm going to give away a free copy to anyone I meet who is facing this disease. I hate cancer but not nearly as much as I hate ignorance.

'I was told I had cancer and that I must expect to die soon. Almost eight years later I still do my job and enjoy life. I have not had conventional treatment. Did my cancer simply disappear? Did I do nothing? Far from it. A number of things happened, some by accident, most by design.' Michael Gearin-Tosh was diagnosed with cancer when he was fifty-four. Consultants urged immediate treatment. Michael refused. Living Proof is a story of how a man learns to steer, in his own way, between the medicine he rejects and the doctors he honours.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I am a frequent buyer of updated home medical books, and have pretty much seen them all. This one is quite superior! It is easy to find various medical conditions, complete in its coverage, and written in a way that the average layperson will understand. The illustrated color pictures are very well done, a rare treat, and contribute well to one's understanding of the copy. In short, it's the best home medical book I've ever seen. Fundamentals of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Micozzi, Fundamentals of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) Review

Fundamentals of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Micozzi, Fundamentals of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
By the fourth edition a book assumes a fullness and depth that comes from diligence to the subject and all its ramifications. This text covers all the basic systems of healing that general health care providers have heard of or know of. It also covers all the lesser known methods or systems of healing.
I am interested in air and sunlight as components of healing. It is covered in this text in great detail.
My own training is Osteopathic. I am familiar with manipulative medicine but not necessarily the Chiropractic, deep tissue massage, and other tissue manipulation treatment systems. Those are all covered here in detailed descriptions of the various healing systems.
As a reference for overall and comprehensive healing systems outside traditional MD medicine, this is the foundation text. You can use this text as a starting point to seek further information on any subject you wish to pursue in detail.
The organization of the text is excellent with each section containing many varieties of healing arts within the section. The tables, charts, and fact boxes are well placed and full of important details.
I recommend this text for anyone who practices alternative medicine in any form. It is a great help to understand how other healing systems interact with your own. It is also excellent for understanding the basis for the other systems that you do not personally practice.
The information in this text does not disparage any system because all systems have something to offer a patient when used in the hands of a practitioner trained in the specific art.

Ibn Sina s famous Canon of Medicine (Qanun fi al-tibb) comes to life in English with this translation. It is a clear and ordered Summa of all the medical knowledge of Ibn Sina s time augmented from his own observations. It is divided into five books. The first contains generalities concerning the human body, sickness, health and general treatment and therapeutics (the only volume translated here). The second contains the materia medica and the pharmacology of herbs. Three methods agreement, difference and concomitant variations are usually regarded as characteristic of modern science. The third book deals with special pathology, studied by organs, or rather by systems. The fourth book opens with the famous treatise on fevers; then follow the treatise on signs, symptoms, diagnostics and prognostics, minor surgery, tumors, wounds, fractures and bites and that on poisons. The fifth book contains the pharmacopoeia. Because the Canon constituted a monumental unity which maintained its authority until modern times it served as a basis for 700 years of medical teaching and practice and is a proven alternative medicine technique.

Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine: The Definitive Home Reference Guide to 550 Key Herbs with all their Uses as Remedies for Common Ailments
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the wide selection of books on herbal uses confronting the average herbalist or curious reader, how is one to choose which resource is best? The answer is that it is impossible to use only one resource. Chevallier's books come close to being the one resource to use for employing herbs for medicinal purposes, but because the misuse of herbs can be deadly, I rely on a variety of material and crossreference my applications. In other words, if anyone says an herb has proved poisonous, I am careful. ....
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBAL MEDICINE (EHM) by Andrew Chevallier is an update of his book THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEDICINAL PLANTS (EMP). EHM covers most of the same plants as EMP, but contains more up-to-date information from various sources conducting research on the properties and uses of herbs, including herbal systems in other parts of the world such as the U.K. and Germany, (i.e. not exclusively reliant on the actions of the FDA or USDA for all it's information).
EHM, as did EMP before it, includes one of the largest selections of plants for medicinal uses. Not all the plants are botonacally speaking "herbs." Black Cherry, for example, is a tree, but like many other trees has constituent parts that may be used for medicinal purposes, and therefore viewed as an "herbal" remedy for certain conditions (chronic dry, irritable coughs!!)--or kill you if you ingest an excess. ....
EHM is not much concerned with the manufacture of floral sachets or assembly of ingredients for pot pourri, or how to lay out your herbal garden for that matter. In fact, my suspician is that the average EHM reader will probably consult the health food store for herbal items, and not grow herbs in the back yard or try to harvest them in the nearest park. ....

The Medical Advisor: The Complete Guide to Alternative and Conventional Treatments
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has consistently provided me with great information...an excellent starting point before contacting your doctor or for an illness you just want tot understand better. There are some common drugs that I couldn't find, but usually could cross reference them to find some mention in the book, if not in the drug info section. It seems to be stronger in the alternative medicine category than the prescriptions, but overall info on general illnesses and symptoms is incredibly comprehensive. This is the one book that should be on every family's shelf.
This book has provided much more insight into drug side effects and interactions (especially drug interactions with herbal remedies) than my doctor, my pharmacist or even the internet has provided. And its great when you need an answer quick, like when you are panicking over an injury or symptom at 3 in the morning! I am eagerly awaiting the 3rd edition.

On an impulse, I sent this book to my father (he's age 77) to help him be better informed about his health. He lives out of state and I'm not always available to find answers to his questions. He's very healthy, but recently he's had bouts of vertigo and anxiety. The book is helpful to him to confirm the information that his physicians give him, and he finds that reassuring. Overall, he says that he really enjoys reading the book and that it's a good reference.

America's Botanico-Medical Movements Review

America's Botanico-Medical Movements
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Prof Berman wrote a thesis in 1954 which explored a little known area of the history of American Pharmacy and Medicine: Plant remedies and Botanical medicinals in America from Colonial times on. In doing so he gave us a view of American Culture not previously expressed. The thesis was circulated and used by many in the field but never published as a book. In his later years Prof Berman with the happy help of the distinguished scholar Michael Flannery used this thesis as a basis for this wonderful book. It is learned, it is lucid, and it is engaging. Sadly, Prof Berman died right before the publication of this book,a book which is testimony to the continuing existence of real scholarship in America. This is not a "theory" book. It is solidly grounded in history and evidence. It is not light reading but even laymen (like myself) should read it to engage good history and good prose. Have you ever heard of the Thomsonians? Are you interested in how this "narrow field" speaks to or is influenced by Jeffersonians and Jacksonians? Are you in short interested in how seemingly small movements within a culture reflect that culture at large? Above all are you interested in the process of investigation which reveals and explainsthese connections? If so read this book. If you want to read trendy scholarship be my guest; but, if you want to read real scholarship--the kind of thing truly imaginative and thoughtful academics do then as I have said you could well profit from this wonderful book.

Discover a fascinating lost episode of American pharmacological history! A CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book! The first comprehensive study of the American botanical movement, this fascinating volume recounts the rise and fall of nineteenth-century herbal medicine, the emergence of a second wave of interest arising from the counter-culture of the 1960s, and the recent herbal renaissance in the United States. In the 1840s the American medical establishment was under attack. Its opponents in the botanico-medical movement claimed that herbs and other natural cures were more effective and considerably safer than conventional medicine. They were right. Conventional medicine at the time consisted of "heroic" doses of mercury and antimony, supplemented by Spanish fly and croton oil, with copious bloodletting as a treatment recommended for everything from mania to miscarriage.By contrast, many of the herbal cures espoused by the new wave of medicine were helpful or at least not actively poisonous. Unfortunately, the botanico-medical movement harbored its share of quacks as well. The history recorded in America's Botanico--Medical Movements includes useless or dangerous treatments as well as petty politics of the worst kind: schisms, public denunciations, physical brawls (with weapons up to and including small cannons), and vicious invective worthy of Hunter Thompson. The favored treatments and pharmacopias of Thomsonians, Neo-Thomsonians, physio-medicalists, and eclectic practitioners are all discussed in detail. In addition to its fascinating narrative, America's Botanico--Medical Movements offers hard-to-find source documents, including:
a catalog of nineteenth-century medicinal plants
the constitutions of several medical societies explaining their doctrines
a libelous editorial attacking members of one of the schismatic groups
patented formulas for fever medicines, emetics, enema preparations, and many other cures
advertisements listing vegetable medicines for saleAmerica's Botanico-Medical Movements provides a scholarly yet entertaining view of the rise and fall of a typically American medical movement. Pharmacists, historians, physicians, and herbalists will find instructive parallels between the nineteenth-century conflicts and the present-day battles between alternative medicine and the medical establishment. This fascinating book represents nearly 50 years of scholarship on the subject and offers the only comprehensive look at medical botany in this country.

Chinese medical Qigong therapy: A comprehensive clinical guide Review

Chinese medical Qigong therapy: A comprehensive clinical guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author's professed purpose of writing this book was to provide information concerning the professional standards of knowledge and skill required in contemorary China to obtain a license as "Doctor of Medical Qigong Therapy," and additionally to describe effective diagnostic and therapeutic methods of Medical Qigong therapy, as established by the Hai Dian Medical Qigong College of Beijing, and thereby provide a textbook for training to that standard under the guidance of a qualified instructor. As such, it is fair to say that there has never been as thorough an explication of medical qigong as is offered in this book. It joins with other current commendable efforts aimed at bringing the traditional medical knowledge of China into the sphere of English-speaking readers.
The book is divided into 12 sections. The first four focus on building a comprehensive foundation in energetic medicine. The second four focus on guidelines for establishing a Medical Qigong clinic and for diagnosing and treating problems of qi deviations. The final four sections focus on treatment modalities, medical qigong prescriptions, regulation exercises, and scientific research in Medical Qigong clinical therapy. The text includes discussions of energetic embryology; energetic anatomy and physiology; training techniques for recognizing, developing, and emitting qi; energetic pathology and qi deviations; energetic diagnosis and symptomatology; clinical practice of Medical Qigong theory; energetic psychology; treating cancer; tumors and other diseases; step-by-step Medical Qigong prescriptions; establishing a clinic; and scientific evidence of the efficacy of Medical Qigong therapy. The biggest part of the book helps one to understand that not all diseases are just because, but they are predicted and denoted by the specific placements in ones' chart.
For example, someone who is with a dual personality it would because of; Many planets in double-bodied signs at birth, and such signs also on the angles; Mercury in a double-bodied or bicorporeal sign, as Gemini, Sagittarius, or Pisces and then afflicted by Saturn and the Moon. The influence of Saturn is to restrain limit the mental faculities and to cause distrubance of, and an unbalanced mental state.
