A Homoeopathic Approach to Cancer Review

A Homoeopathic Approach to Cancer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Homeopathic Approach To Cancer is a treasure trove of information even for those who do not believe in homeopathy. It's written by a caring Indian homeopathic doctor who comes from a lineage of homeopathic doctors (father, brother, sister) and was trained both in India and in England. The book is a distillation of his 30+ years of homeopathic practice with all types of cancer patients throughout the world and employs the case study approach. Its 9 chapters are organized by topic and are self-contained, thus can be read as separate modules if the reader wishes to do so. It's fact-based, rich in data, and demonstrates how homeopathy can work alongside traditional medical treatments, such as chemotherapy. The book is a diligent compilation of real life examples (126 cases in total) presenting each patient's profile and diagnosis, the details of their homeopathic prescription as well as the outcome of the treatment. It opens up potential new ways to help cancer patients combat their disease, hand in hand with traditional medicine. In any case, lots to gain and nothing to loose by reading it.

The Healing Promise of Qi: Creating Extraordinary Wellness Through Qigong and Tai Chi Review

The Healing Promise of Qi: Creating Extraordinary Wellness Through Qigong and Tai Chi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Roger Jahnke has taken the ancient practice of Qigong - a healing meditation practice that combines gentle movement with focus, posture and breath - and has truly made it accessible to beginners. And we're not just talking about theory here: I was able to immediately begin practicing on my own with his clear instructions and accompanying illustrations. On the theory side he weaves a remarkable story using current scientific insights to support ancient Chinese concepts in a way that leaves you inspired and confident that this is indeed the real thing. The key to any meditative healing practice is actually doing the practice and this book is as motivating as I've ever read in getting me to get up and go for it. It has the feel of a companion that I'll be able to turn to for years to come, without it ever getting stale or out-of-date. The three promises of Qigong - it's free and accessible to everyone, you'll benefit if you practice, and it's easy to do - are clearly derived from the author's years of personal experience, practice and deep desire to share this wisdom with a wide audience. Many thanks from a new student.

Ibn Sina s famous Canon of Medicine (Qanun fi al-tibb) comes to life in English with this translation. It is a clear and ordered Summa of all the medical knowledge of Ibn Sina s time augmented from his own observations. It is divided into five books. The first contains generalities concerning the human body, sickness, health and general treatment and therapeutics (the only volume translated here). The second contains the materia medica and the pharmacology of herbs. Three methods agreement, difference and concomitant variations are usually regarded as characteristic of modern science. The third book deals with special pathology, studied by organs, or rather by systems. The fourth book opens with the famous treatise on fevers; then follow the treatise on signs, symptoms, diagnostics and prognostics, minor surgery, tumors, wounds, fractures and bites and that on poisons. The fifth book contains the pharmacopoeia. Because the Canon constituted a monumental unity which maintained its authority until modern times it served as a basis for 700 years of medical teaching and practice and is a proven alternative medicine technique.

Kundalini Yoga Meditation for Complex Psychiatric Disorders: Techniques Specific for Treating the Psychoses, Personality, and Pervasive Developmental Disorders Review

Kundalini Yoga Meditation for Complex Psychiatric Disorders: Techniques Specific for Treating the Psychoses, Personality, and Pervasive Developmental Disorders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a MFT student and I have studied with the author for several years, having practiced many Kundalini Yoga meditation techniques in this book and the one preceding it. Foe me personally, Kundalini Yoga provided the technology to heal mentally as well as spiritually. The experience I gained through reading the book opened my eyes to the most clear and comprehensive understanding of the complex mental disorders including schizophrenia, personality disorders, and autism. This understanding awakened in me a previously unknown compassion to all those suffering from these illnesses, and I gained insight of what is demanded of therapy in the future.
Kundalini Yoga, particularly the yoga protocols presented in this book and the one preceding it, will bring hope to those who have little to none. The instructions are presented with clarity, alongside with comprehensive, recent, and related scientific research and real-life case histories. This information can be very useful for psychologists, social workers, therapists, and counselors that may be looking for new approaches for treating complex and problematic patients. This book presents a bounty of novel and highly effective multi-part and disorder-specific protocols that are sure to help advance treatment for what are otherwise difficult and complex patients. I completely trust the techniques in this book since I have practiced many of them and now the multipart protocols, and I am looking forward to sharing them with patients in the future. If you have a hunch this book will help you, with patience and practice, it will.

Essential Oils Integrative Medical Guide: Building Immunity, Increasing Longevity, and Enhancing Mental Performance With Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils Review

Essential Oils Integrative Medical Guide: Building Immunity, Increasing Longevity, and Enhancing Mental Performance With Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Young presents a thorough overview of research on a wide variety of essential oils. He also presents a good bit of practical information on using these powerhouses of healing. This is a reference anyone serious about alternative medicine should have in their library.
The first chapter concentrates on essential oils as the missing link in modern medicine. This is a theme that Dr. Young returns to again and again in his writings. He feels that the integration of essential oils in any mode of medicine stands to bring deeper levels of healing than we currently see. He speaks of the ancient secrets which are being rediscovered by modern science. At the end of this chapter, he chronicles his own search for this informaion.
The nitty gritty of how these oils affect the human body is the subject of the second and third chapters. He covers topics ranging from the chemistry involved to the actual physiological and emotional effects of the oils. the chapter also includes a greaat deal of information on different grades of oils and their proper uses.
Chapters 4 and 5 detail production and safe use of essential oils.
The next three chapters give details on individual and blends of essential ois and their products. This is one of the real strengths of this book due to the care and detail Dr. Young provides.
The rest of the book is the part that makes it worth what we pay for it. There is a wealth of practical information on techniquest for the use of these oils. He winds up this impressive work with an extensive list of references backing up the information provided in the rest of the book. This is followed by more than a dozen appendicies containing specific details analyzing many aspects of the issues he has raised throughout the book.
The book is aimed at medical professionals, for which I highly recommend it. But it is a useful resource for the lay person who wants to be able to speak with medical professinals about using essential oils as part of their practices in order to restore fully te health of their patients.

Chinese medical Qigong therapy: A comprehensive clinical guide Review

Chinese medical Qigong therapy: A comprehensive clinical guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author's professed purpose of writing this book was to provide information concerning the professional standards of knowledge and skill required in contemorary China to obtain a license as "Doctor of Medical Qigong Therapy," and additionally to describe effective diagnostic and therapeutic methods of Medical Qigong therapy, as established by the Hai Dian Medical Qigong College of Beijing, and thereby provide a textbook for training to that standard under the guidance of a qualified instructor. As such, it is fair to say that there has never been as thorough an explication of medical qigong as is offered in this book. It joins with other current commendable efforts aimed at bringing the traditional medical knowledge of China into the sphere of English-speaking readers.
The book is divided into 12 sections. The first four focus on building a comprehensive foundation in energetic medicine. The second four focus on guidelines for establishing a Medical Qigong clinic and for diagnosing and treating problems of qi deviations. The final four sections focus on treatment modalities, medical qigong prescriptions, regulation exercises, and scientific research in Medical Qigong clinical therapy. The text includes discussions of energetic embryology; energetic anatomy and physiology; training techniques for recognizing, developing, and emitting qi; energetic pathology and qi deviations; energetic diagnosis and symptomatology; clinical practice of Medical Qigong theory; energetic psychology; treating cancer; tumors and other diseases; step-by-step Medical Qigong prescriptions; establishing a clinic; and scientific evidence of the efficacy of Medical Qigong therapy. Many charts, graphs, and illustrations complement the verbal material.

Healing Dramas and Clinical Plots: The Narrative Structure of Experience (Cambridge Studies in Medical Anthropology) Review

Healing Dramas and Clinical Plots: The Narrative Structure of Experience (Cambridge Studies in Medical Anthropology)
Average Reviews:

I had polio in 1947. Subsequently, I spent years in physical therapy and medical community services. This is a book clearly written by an author who has very little experience in the area of physical suffering or disability. Yet her clear and precise understanding of what denigrates and also what boosts the morale of patients dealing with severe trauma shines forth. I applaud this effort. The constant push toward compassion found in her book and the call to carefully listen to the stories of individual patients astounds someone like me who grew up in the confines of a rather harsh and unfeeling medical community where listening to the patient was unheard of. This is for me a glorious breakthrough. And yet, the most crucial and pivotal assistance ever imparted in my estimation is a spiritual understanding of how we come to terms with faith in our Maker and God during times of tragedy and loss. Personally, I don't know how anyone survives severe disability apart from the grace and compassion of the Almighty Who can and will enter into our place of suffering and bestow spiritual strength to press on. Learning that God is a very present Help in trouble enables and fosters triumph in times of darkness.

There is growing interest in "therapeutic narratives" and the relation between narrative and healing. Cheryl Mattingly's ethnography of the practice of occupational therapy in a North American hospital investigates the complex interconnections between narrative and experience in clinical work. Viewing the world of disability as a socially constructed experience, it presents fascinatingly detailed case studies of clinical interactions between occupational therapists and patients, many of them severely injured and disabled, and illustrates the diverse ways in which an ordinary clinical interchange is transformed into a dramatic experience governed by a narrative plot. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including anthropological studies of narrative and ritual, literary theory, phenomenology and hermeneutics, this book develops a narrative theory of social action and experience. While most contemporary theories of narrative presume that narratives impose an artificial coherence upon lived experience, Mattingly argues for a revision of the classic mimetic position. If narrative offers a correspondence to lived experience, she contends, the dominant formal feature which connects the two is not narrative coherence but narrative drama. Moving and sophisticated, this book is an innovative contribution to the study of modern institutions and to anthropological theory.

Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints, and Healing in the Modern World Review

Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints, and Healing in the Modern World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Twenty years before starting to write this book, Duffin, a hematologist, was "invited to read a set of bone marrow samples....The fourteen specimens were taken from one woman over an eighteen-month period" (p 3), a woman suffering from severe leukemia. Duffin assumed the patient had died, and that she had been asked to look over the samples for a lawsuit.
As it turned out, the patient was--and still is--very much alive. The samples were being studied by the Catholic church during the process of sainthood. Every person who was proposed for canonization had to have a required number of miracles before the process could continue. And the church needed to be sure it really was a miracle.
A good outcome was not enough for the church. Nor did a long remission count. Instead, the miracle needed to be spontaneous, and lasting. This process of canonization, which began in the 1500's, required medical doctors to agree that there was no possible scientific explanation for what had occurred.
Curious, Duffin visited the Vatican's archives and studied the miracles recorded over the past four centuries. The result of her research is this book, full of quirky facts about the miracles and the people and the doctors involved.
Take the case of Maria, who, in 1844, discovered a lump in her breast the size of a walnut."Every day it grew bigger, harder, and more painful (p 37). The doctors insisted on an instant surgery. But her priest told her about "the cause of Paolo della Croce...so for twenty days and nights, Maria prayed to the uncanonized Paolo" (p 37). On the night of Oct. 20th the lump vanished.
Some miracles are downright common, such as the incorruptibility "(preservation) or sweet odor of the corpse of a saint" (p 100). This miracle was "so frequent an occurrence ...that exhumation of the body of the would-be saint was part of the canonization process" (p 102).
Oddly, miracles that the saint performed before he died didn't count for the required number of miracles through his intercession after death. Having the stigmata may have been a sign of holiness; it had no effect on the canonization process.
Some doctors became defensive during the process, and some seemed to be left out of the loop, so that, ten years or more after seeing a patient, they are stunned to realize that same patient is still alive.
Surprise seems to be part of the process. "Just as the doctors' surprise is crucial...the patient's surprise at recovery also seems to be an important element...The devout do not presume" ( p 177).
Truly a fascinating book.

Modern culture tends to separate medicine and miracles, but their histories are closely intertwined. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes saints through canonization based on evidence that they worked miracles, as signs of their proximity to God. Physicianhistorian Jacalyn Duffin has examined Vatican sources on 1400 miracles from six continents and spanning four centuries. Overwhelmingly the miracles cited in canonizations between 1588 and 1999 are healings, and the majority entail medical care and physician testimony. These remarkable records contain intimate stories of illness, prayer, and treatment, as told by people who rarely leave traces: peasants and illiterates, men and women, old and young. A woman's breast tumor melts away; a man's wounds knit; a lame girl suddenly walks; a dead baby revives. Suspicious of wishful thinking or naïve enthusiasm, skeptical clergy shaped the inquiries to identify recoveries that remain unexplained by the best doctors of the era. The tales of healing are supplemented with substantial testimony from these physicians. Some elements of the miracles change through time. Duffin shows that doctors increase in number; new technologies are embraced quickly; diagnoses shift with altered capabilities. But other aspects of the miracles are stable. The narratives follow a dramatic structure, shaped by the formal questions asked of each witness and by perennial reactions to illness and healing. In this history, medicine and religion emerge as parallel endeavors aimed at deriving meaningful signs from particular instances of human distress -- signs to explain, alleviate, and console in confrontation with suffering and mortality. A lively, sweeping analysis of a fascinating set of records, this book also poses an exciting methodological challenge to historians: miracle stories are a vital source not only on the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people, but also on medical science and its practitioners.
