Pharmaceutical Calculations Review

Pharmaceutical Calculations

This is by far the finest, most comprehensive text book on pharmaceutical calculations available. This is the text by which all others are judged. It is great for the student who is unfamiliar with this topic as well as for the pharmacist who could use a refresher course. It makes a great reference text for the pharmacy.

Clinical Veterinary Advisor: Dogs and Cats Review

Clinical Veterinary Advisor: Dogs and Cats
Average Reviews:

This is a must have for any small animal veterinarian or student. It blows the "5 Minute Consult" out of the water. There is always someone using it our practice, we have just decided to leave it out on our treatment table. It's a very concise but thorough reference for everyday use. It's well organized and easy to read. 95% of the time the information we need is in there. If not, we refer to specific books on Optho, derm etc but you could practice veterinary medicine with just this book! I highly recommend it!

Foye's Principles of Medicinal Chemistry (Lemke, Foye's Principles of Medicinal Chemistry) Review

Foye's Principles of Medicinal Chemistry (Lemke, Foye's Principles of Medicinal Chemistry)

Well written and adequate for the student of pharmacy. However for this audience I would recommend Wilson and Gisvold's Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry 11th Ed, because the figures and text are more complete providing a clearer more concise and rigorous treatment of the subject.

The Sixth Edition of this well-known text has been fully revised and updated to meet the changing curricula of medicinal chemistry courses. Emphasis is on patient-focused pharmaceutical care and on the pharmacist as a therapeutic consultant, rather than a chemist.
A new disease state management section explains appropriate therapeutic options for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and men's and women's health problems. Also new to this edition: Clinical Significance boxes, Drug Lists at the beginning of appropriate chapters, and an eight-page color insert with detailed illustrations of drug structures.
Case studies from previous editions and answers to this edition's case studies are available online at thePoint.

Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach Review

Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I almost never read textbooks for class. I always rely on the class syllabus and lecture notes and I've done well. But I not only read this book for my therapeutics class, I'm going to take time out of my summer to read the other sections because it is so helpful and well-written. The explanations are detailed enough that you understand the background mechanism, but not so detailed and dense that you just want to skim through it. Great resource!

Pharmacotherapy Principles and Practice (VALUE PACK 3) Review

Pharmacotherapy Principles and Practice (VALUE PACK 3)
Average Reviews:

This was a purchase for my NP program pharm class. However, it is turning out to be one of the most current and helpful books I have purchased. It goes into detail about trending medications and breaks down the underlying problems and drug mechanisms clearly.
Might seem expensive but it is compatible to three prior books I have purchased all wrapped up into one!

American Medical Association Guide to Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs Review

American Medical Association Guide to Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best book I have ever seen on drugs. I came here to Amazon to buy the latest revision, only to be very disappointed to see that it has not been revised.
Many of the other drug manuals I have seen lack some information, like what dosage levels are generally prescribed for what conditions, or they lump all drugs in a category together, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Not so this book! For every drug, you get the following information: general info, drug group, overdose danger rating, dependence rating, prescription needed, available as a generic, frequency and timing of dose, adult dosage range for various conditions, onset of effect, duration of action, diet advice, storage, what to do if you miss a dose, advice on stopping the drug, overdose actions, drug interactions, possible adverse effects, advice on prolonged used, and special precautions if you are pregnant, breast feeding, over 60, driving or doing hazardous work, drink alcohol, and precautions for infants a children.
We have other books, but always use this one for the drugs it lists. Unfortunately, since it was published in 1988, there are more and more drugs not in this book.

Was required for my class in Pharmacology in my PT Program. Very straightforward and easy to read...as far as that could be possible with Pharmacology. Recommend this book. The lead author, Peter Panus teaches the class and definitely refers to the book a lot.

Medical Herbalism: The Science Principles and Practices Of Herbal Medicine Review

Medical Herbalism: The Science Principles and Practices Of Herbal Medicine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great text for learning terminology such as herbal actions it's easy to read and understand. The discriptions are just long enough so that it does not include excess/repetative words. The materia medica is also written the same way, precise, it may be too brief for more advanced herbalists however for beginners it is perfect. The materia medica is not that big. For a more elaborate "indication" section you will probably have to read research. I use this as a text as a Herbal Science major, I don't think it is very readable for the layman trying to learn herbal medicine or if you are just interested in herbal medicine. It's written like an encyclopedia, so you jump to sections that you want. The first part of the book has plant constituents with drawings of organic molecules. The second part is organized according to body systems. It's very user friendly, the index has pretty much everything you want to find. Fantastic book as a text, I'll be using it for a long time.

Let Them Eat Prozac: The Unhealthy Relationship Between the Pharmaceutical Industry and Depression (Medicine, Culture, and History) Review

Let Them Eat Prozac: The Unhealthy Relationship Between the Pharmaceutical Industry and Depression (Medicine, Culture, and History)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having been a pharmacist for 24 yrs I can say with depressing certainty that MDs have absolutely minimal understanding of the drugs they prescribe. They receive only the barest instruction in pharmacology in med school, and the majority of their ongoing drug education seems to come from pharmaceutical reps. This book just further validates observations I have already made about the side effects of Prozac and its cousins. The detail involved in the handling of the subject matter may be too technical for the casual reader but would be fascinating to healthcare professionals and attorneys. It underscores the penalties to be paid by honest researchers and healthcare professionals in this market-driven economy by those who dare to challenge the data put out by companies with huge profits to make and to protect--and who also have the financial resources to ruin anyone who tells the truth about their products. It reinforces what should be a guiding principal in most areas of life: before believing what you are told, ask who profits by your gullibility and need. And do not be too quick to distrust your own instincts and observations.

Prozac. Paxil. Zoloft. Turn on your television and you are likely to see a commercial for one of the many selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on the market. We hear a lot about them, but do we really understand how these drugs work and what risks are involved for anyone who uses them?

Let Them Eat Prozac explores the history of SSRIs—from their early development to their latest marketing campaigns—and the controversies that surround them. Initially, they seemed like wonder drugs for those with mild to moderate depression. When Prozac was released in the late 1980s, David Healy was among the psychiatrists who prescribed it. But he soon observed that some of these patients became agitated and even attempted suicide. Could the new wonder drug actually be making patients worse?

Healy draws on his own research and expertise to demonstrate the potential hazards associated with these drugs. He intersperses case histories with insider accounts of the research leading to the development and approval of SSRIs as a treatment for depression. Let Them Eat Prozac clearly demonstrates that the problems go much deeper than a side-effect of a particular drug. The pharmaceutical industry would like us to believe that SSRIs can safely treat depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental problems. But, as Let Them Eat Prozac reveals, this "cure" may be worse than the disease.
