Medical Anthropology and the World System Review

Medical Anthropology and the World System
Average Reviews:

As a nonacademic with a strong interest in medical anthropology, this book is exactly what I was looking for, a very broad, thorough overview of the subject, with ample history of the development of medical anthropology. It gave me many new perspectives from which to view disease and health issues. It even briefly covers aspects of New Age approaches to health. Very contemporary and up to date. Since it is written as an academic textbook for undergraduate or graduate courses, the layman will find some sections dragging, but overall very comprehensible and engaging.

Chasing Medical Miracles: The Promise and Perils of Clinical Trials Review

Chasing Medical Miracles: The Promise and Perils of Clinical Trials
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a diabetic author Alex O'Meara had given up hope for a cure and for thirty years had to take two or more shots of insulin daily. But in 2004 he signed up for a clinical trial involving an experimental transplant - and his experience led to an investigation of the industry in CHASING MEDICAL MIRACLES; THE PROMISE AND PERILS OF CLINICAL TRIALS. It's the first book to offer a behind-the-scenes view of clinical trails and how they operate and are funded, and is key for any medical student and consumer who wishes to understand their organization and importance.

Charles Briggs is a genius. I had him as a professor a couple of years ago and he is the most entertaining and understanding individual. This book is also really good. It was one of the assigned readings for the class, but I am glad to have read it!

American Medical Association Guide to Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs Review

American Medical Association Guide to Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best book I have ever seen on drugs. I came here to Amazon to buy the latest revision, only to be very disappointed to see that it has not been revised.
Many of the other drug manuals I have seen lack some information, like what dosage levels are generally prescribed for what conditions, or they lump all drugs in a category together, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Not so this book! For every drug, you get the following information: general info, drug group, overdose danger rating, dependence rating, prescription needed, available as a generic, frequency and timing of dose, adult dosage range for various conditions, onset of effect, duration of action, diet advice, storage, what to do if you miss a dose, advice on stopping the drug, overdose actions, drug interactions, possible adverse effects, advice on prolonged used, and special precautions if you are pregnant, breast feeding, over 60, driving or doing hazardous work, drink alcohol, and precautions for infants a children.
We have other books, but always use this one for the drugs it lists. Unfortunately, since it was published in 1988, there are more and more drugs not in this book.

This book is excellent.
It is very well written and can be easily read by lay persons as well as being a great source of information for health professionals (researchers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and all MDs.)
All of the important people in the field of MDMA research and history (Sasha and Ann Shulgin, Rick Doblin, among others) are either interviewed or have written chapters in the book.
The book is very informative and gives the extreme potential of this unique chemical. It is written by one of the most respected experts on MDMA.
This book is as objective as can be. Possible risks of MDMA use as well as the possible benefits are discussed in detail.
It is a must read for anyone interested in the topic of MDMA/ecstasy.
All royalties from the sale of this book will go toward funding clinical MDMA research.

A Call to Action Review

A Call to Action
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In "A Call to Action" Pfizer chairman Hank McKinnell makes the observation that the US has a "sick care" system, not a health care system. While the entitites working within this system may be the best at what they do, the lack of a true health care system will continue to impose a growing financial, social, and quality-of-life burden on all. Additionally, the health issues facing the world, such as the HIV/AIDS pandemic, are bigger than any one organization can handle.
Through provocative observations and insightful questions, McKinnell creates a framework for the discussion of this crucial issue. The solution can not lie solely upon private enterprise, governments, NGOs, or individuals, but must be achieved through the concerted efforts of all parties, both public and private. The questions raised in this book provide a necessary framework to both get the dialogue going as well as to organize what may otherwise be considered an overwhelming task. Importantly, this industry veteran shows that there is reason to believe the goal is achievable.
Our healthcare system has profound effects throughout every fiber of our society, from the way we live our lives to the taxes we pay to the role of government in providing for a healthful place in which to pursue our dreams. As such, it is important for all concerned citizens to understand the challenges facing the establishment and maintenance of a true health care system.
"A Call to Action" is a surprising, thought-provoking, and ultimately hopeful challenge to establish a true and sustainable health care system. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in one of the biggest issues facing the US both today and in the future.
