(More customer reviews)This is the best book I have ever seen on drugs. I came here to Amazon to buy the latest revision, only to be very disappointed to see that it has not been revised.
Many of the other drug manuals I have seen lack some information, like what dosage levels are generally prescribed for what conditions, or they lump all drugs in a category together, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Not so this book! For every drug, you get the following information: general info, drug group, overdose danger rating, dependence rating, prescription needed, available as a generic, frequency and timing of dose, adult dosage range for various conditions, onset of effect, duration of action, diet advice, storage, what to do if you miss a dose, advice on stopping the drug, overdose actions, drug interactions, possible adverse effects, advice on prolonged used, and special precautions if you are pregnant, breast feeding, over 60, driving or doing hazardous work, drink alcohol, and precautions for infants a children.
We have other books, but always use this one for the drugs it lists. Unfortunately, since it was published in 1988, there are more and more drugs not in this book.

(More customer reviews)I bought this book in 1993 when my husband was suffering from a
illness. The doctors were having a hard time in their diagnosis of his illness, and I wanted to help in anyway possible. This book was my constant companion for a year, and I still find it very useful for me , my family and for friends that are always getting information from it. My only dissapointment today is to find out there is not a newer, or rather updated version out...medicine has made a lot of new discoveries and constantly up dating treatments.

(More customer reviews)I have been using the 2 volume American Medical Association Home Medical Encyclopedia for several years and loved it. My only complaint was that it had been published in 1989, and a lot of things can change in the world of medicine in 2-3 years, let alone 10-12 years. So, I was very happy to see that a newer, one volume edition had been published. As was its predecessor, it is a very comprehensive resource, written in layman's terms, but not in a simplistic manner. Not only are medical conditions described in concise yet thorough detail, but symptoms and treatments are included as well.
The only thing keeping my review from being 5 stars is that it has fewer photographs than the 1989 publication. In some instances, a drawing does fine, but in others, it is a poor substitute. For example, In the new edition, there is a drawing used to illustrate a goiter, and all you really see is some shading on the neck that gives no sense of the size or proportions of what a real goiter would be like. In the 1989 version, a photo of a person with a goiter clearly and accurately depicts the condition. I would not want the lack of photography to keep someone from acquiring the book, because it is an excellent resource. Whenever the next revision is done, however, the extensive use photograpy needs to be reincorporated.
