I highly recommend this as an essential text for Medical, Graduate and PhD students studying radiology, physiology, pathology, medical physics, health physics or radiation protection, as well as students pursuing careers in diaster preparedness and diaster management. Well-written and illustrated. Extensive detail of most of the major accidents involving radiation and radioactive material and radiation from machine produced sources. Caution: some of the photographs are graphic and are not intended for those with weak stomaches! This reference contain accounts of accidents that I was not aware of until I read this work. This work has an excellent introduction, and very useful Appendices and a Glossary.

It has been written by many of the most experiences people in the field and the way it is written is as if you were sharing with them experiences, while drinking coffee on the lobby of a simulation congress.
Great ideas!! Great Tools!! It would have saved us money and effort if we would read it a couple of years ago!!

En Route: A Paramedic's Stories of Life, Death, and Everything in Between Review

(More customer reviews)"En Route" is a series of vignettes that tell great stories with great feeling, often putting you right there with the author.
However, there is often a lack of connective material. He seems to change jobs and companies often with no comments or connections. He meets a nurse, asks her out, then is engaged, married, and divorced in little more than a few sentences. People are mentioned with little context- why do we need the full name of a person who pops up a single time without knowing anything else about them?
There is also an assumption that you are familiar with both rural Louisiana and basic paramedic skills- he often mentions locations as if you are already intimately familiar with them, where a brief commentary that this is a one-horse town, or this is a suburb of a better known town, etc. A little more context or background would have been nice.
I also missed any sort of a glossary or explanations of terms he used(although I MUCH prefer explanations in the text). For example, there is a running gag about 'spiking a bag of saline' that I am sure has paramedics in stitches, but becomes kind of annoying to the rest of us.
On the other hand, unlike so many of EMS stories, it does not devolve into an 'its all about me' tale, a morality tale, or anything like that. Instead, it is a good overview of the life of a paramedic- the ups and downs, and built on a nice outline in which each story moves us towards his thoughtful ending.

Stephen "Kelly" Grayson has seen the best of us at our worst. When hearts stop working, when blood alcohol levels exceed limits we shouldn't contemplate, when bodies are extricated from car wrecks, he's been there to pick up the pieces, save our lives, and watch us slip away. His touching stories of life and death and the hilarious ones of times in between are here to give us an insight of what happens after we call 911, the ambulance doors close, or even what happens inside the ER when the nurse shows the family to the waiting room.

There is always someone using it our practice, we have just decided to leave it out on our treatment table. It's a very concise but thorough reference for everyday use. It's well organized and easy to read. 95% of the time the information we need is in there. If not, we refer to specific books on Optho, derm etc but you could practice veterinary medicine with just this book! I highly recommend it!

I used it straight out of residency to guide me thru performing procedures in practice that I'd never or seldom done before.
The text and diagrams are so clear, and with very practical information, that doing these procedures was easy and complication-free.
It''s also great bc it gives useful stuff like sample consent forms, sample hx forms, and a concise listing of contraindications and potential complications, not to mention specific billing / coding information.
this new edition is more comprehensive than ever, and covers just about any minor (or major) procedure you would ever consider performing as a family medicine physician.
I refer to it on a regular basis in my clinic, and highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)This little orange book has a lot to recommend it: The stories are powerful, sometimes for the hope they give, sometimes for the horror they reveal, sometimes for both. The writing is clear and easy to read, and goes by quickly. Perhaps most impressively, the pace and rhythm are such that in spite of the peaks of emotion achieved, burnout is avoided, with humor and hope slipping in to defuse the horror just when as it becomes too great to contain, and horror making its appearance just when we are so uplifted that we should burst. These are the best of the stories collected from over 15,000 ER staff members, so if you want to know the extremes of life at your local Emergency Room, don't bother with TV's ER, read this book instead.
