Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY (BORON))

I have bought 4 physiology books during my medical studies and i am only a second year student! And i must say, that this book is definetely the best one, if you have the basic knowledge. If you are a new begginer though, it is very very difficult to start with this book, since the explanations are very detailed and require a certain level of 'scientific way of thinking'. There are many research examples and historical links, something that a student prepearing for an exam doesn't want to waste time on. Some of the explanations are too long and complicated, that one looses the initial idea of what the explanation was about.
On the other hand, if you are quite skilfull in physiology, this is a great book. The pictures are extraordinary and very scematic and understandable!!! You definetely get a lot for your money!
So, in conclusion, if you buy yourself a simpler physiology book and get the basics from there, Medical Physiology is the perfect choise to go on expanding your knowledge with. But don't buy it as your very very first physiology book. It will just confuse and frustrate you.

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary (Dorland's Medical Dictionary) Review

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary (Dorland's Medical Dictionary)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DORLAND'S ILLUSTRATED MEDICAL DICTIONARY, 32nd Edition, is even better than the last issue. This company has been making this invaluable source for all medical personal and paramedical personal and now even for the home for over 110 years. They know what they are doing and are continuing to do it well. Handsomely bound, the format is like every other dictionary - all entries are alphabetically placed and each section of the alphabet is marked by a thumb tab along the lateral border. The printing is absolutely readable with the word or topic being sought printed in maroon typeface, a clever device for facilitating looking for the term on a full page of writing. That is to say, this is a visually user-friendly book - all 2150 pages of it!
In addition to offering a visual guide to correct pronunciation of the terms, there is an associated CD that comes in the back of the book which when inserted into you CD player or computer offers audio pronunciation guides for almost every term. (The CD also offers excellent appendices for listing anatomy, nerves, etc in understandably related columns.)
While not every word is accompanied by 'graphic illustration,' many are. For instance, looking up Cimex lenticuaris (bed bug) there are all species listed, traits of the insects listed, and two excellent photographs, one showing the top side and the other the underside. In other words, if the reader finds a bug that may cause disease, this is a fine guide to exploring that topic. In addition to multiple photographs, there are also Xray views, drawings, anatomy details of all the muscles in the body, the brain, the nervous system, images of disease states etc. if the reader wants to know what a particular surgical operation (term) means, there is a section of alphabetically listed operations that is cross referenced with the remainder of the book so that the reader can obtain a rather full understanding - even the ability to look up the instruments to be used.
This book is a must for medical students, for physicians' offices, and for the informed reader who wishes to understand the dialogue with medical people to aid in making decisions and being fully informed. Grady Harp, June 11

Medical Assisting Administrative and Clinical Competencies (Medical Assisting: Admin & Clin Competencies ( Keir)) Review

Medical Assisting Administrative and Clinical Competencies (Medical Assisting: Admin and Clin Competencies ( Keir))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm currently in a Medical Assisting course with this book and the workbook that goes with it. I speak for my entire class and even my instructor when I say, "This is one of the worst books I've ever come across!" This book has been dubbed "The Ugly Book" in my class! There are so many inconsistencies and misspellings throughout the entire book. We all wonder how old the editor and proof readers were. My 10 year old child could do a much better job! The workbook that goes along with the text book is atrocious, boring and monotonous to say the least, and also with major errors, words that do not fit in the crossword puzzles and/or word scrambles....not to mention questions that do not even pertain to the chapter they are supposed to go along with.
For any of you who already have this text, just for an example see workbook assignment sheet for Chapter 12, first page under Unit Review A. Short Answer #'s 1 - 5. Those questions have nothing to do with the text chapter subject what so ever. And see last page of the same assignment sheet under Certification and Registration Preparation Question #5. Standard precautions apply to all of the following EXCEPT; A. blood, B. mucous membrane secretions, C. tissues, D. unidentified human body fluid, E. All of the above. Say what??? Standard precautions APPLY to ALL of those choices. They clearly asked which one it doesn't apply to. There is no correct answer here!! They forgot to put in an answer that Standard Precautions would NOT apply to. What a JOKE!!!
This book seriously has me worried that I'm learning incorrect material and that when I'm one day working for a physician, he/she will look at me and wonder where I went to school. I've informed my school and shown them many of the errors and my concerns. It's too late for them to change books now as I've almost completed my course, but they should seriously consider finding another publisher for their course for future students! We all deserve BETTER!
Oh, just one last thing, I installed the disks that come with the text, which doesn't work properly and has many glitches... my virus protection scanned my computer one day after installing and found the program to have a Trojan Horse Virus! I emailed the company, they sent me an email back telling me, "Sorry". Sorry? That's it?? Luckily my virus protection found it and nabbed it before it really did something horrible to my system!! Sorry, is all they could say for their junk that could have destroyed my computer!
Do yourselves a favor, if you're looking for a Medical Assisting Course, ask the school which book they teach out of first!!

For all intents and purposes, this is a great book. When you need information about something specific, you'll get it. The biggest problem comes when you're reading for class - it's very repetitive and wordy. Makes it hard to get through when you have other classes to read for at the same time! I'd recommend it, but keep in mind that it will be harder to get through than some other books would be.

Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Guyton Physiology) Review

Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Guyton Physiology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought it might be helpful to people if I excerpted the following from Prof. John Hall's preface to the 12th edition because it deals in part with what revisions he made for the book:
"I worked closely with Dr. Guyton for almost 30 years and had the privilege of writing parts of the 9th and 10th editions. After Dr. Guyton's tragic death in an automobile accident in 2003, I assumed responsibility for completing the 11th edition.
For the 12th edition of the Textbook of Medical Physiology, I have the same goal as for previous editions - to explain, in language easily understood by students, how the different cells, tissues, and organs of the human body work together to maintain life.[...]
A brief explanation is needed about several features of the 12th edition. Although many of the chapters have been revised to include new principles of physiology, the text length has been closely monitored to limit the book size so that it can be used effectively in physiology courses for medical students and health care professionals. Many of the figures have also been redrawn and are in full color. New references have been chosen primarily for their presentation of physiological principles, for the quality of their own references, and for their easy accessibility. The selected bibliography at the end of the chapters lists papers mainly from recently published scientific journals that can be freely accessed from the PubMed internet site at [...]. Use of these references, as well as cross-references from them, can give the student almost complete coverage of the entire field of physiology. The effort to be as concise as possible has, unfortunately, necessitated a more simplified and dogmatic presentation of many physiologic principles than I normally would have desired. However, the bibliography can be used to learn more about the controversies and unanswered questions that remain in understanding the complex functions of the human body in health and disease.
Another feature is that the print is set in two sizes. The material in large print constitutes the fundamental physiologic information that students will require in virtually all of their medical activities and studies.
The material in small print is of several different kinds: first, anatomic, chemical, and other information that is needed for immediate discussion but that most students will learn in more detail in other courses; second, physiologic information of special importance to certain fields of clinical medicine; and, third, information that will be of particular value to those students who may wish to study particular physiologic mechanisms more deeply."

As a nursing student, I thought this book would be a great help...it isn't. The few basic definitions I've needed so far aren't listed. I've had to use Wikipedia, which is really sad when I have a "medical dictionary" sitting in front of me. I really wish I'd gone with the Mosby's. It might be helpful in advanced settings, but not educational. Also, the print is small and difficult to read...even for a person with normal vision. Save your money and go with another brand.

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (Thumb Index) Review

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (Thumb Index)
Average Reviews:

Although Stedman's dictionary seems to be the preference for most medical schools, Taber's actually contains a lot more words than Stedman's. To be fair, there isn't much competition when it comes to medical dictionaries, it's either Stedman's or Taber's. Stedman's update is usually 4 to 5 years, but you'll only notice the lack of new words if you're in the research field. Taber's tends to release a new edition every year or two, plus you get more words at a lower price. In terms of the definitions in Taber's, it's written to be just a bit more considerate for the layman. Whereas in Stedman's, you would probably need to be at least a medical student or higher to make the most use of it. Best solution is to get both, at least one of the two definitions will make better sense to you.

American Medical Association Family Medical Guide, 4th Edition Review

American Medical Association Family Medical Guide, 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is no surprise that the latest edition of this excellent consumer reference is better than ever. For those who are newcomers to the power of this authoritative tome, its centerpiece is a series of symptom charts enabling users to conduct the equivalent of a differential self-diagnosis. Charts are available for the most common symptomologies--e.g. coughing, chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain. Through an interrogatory consisting of sequential questions which might be asked by a health professional presented with the symptoms in question, the charts guide the reader to action steps--ranging from reassurance and self-help options to advise to seek medical attention (urgently or in due course as the case may be).
By saving unnecessary visits to the doctor's office or emergency room (thus helping to control medical costs) or spurring the overly complacent to imperative action, the AMA does a great service to the public and the profession by publishing this reference at an extremely affordable price.
The bulk of the book consists of articles regarding various diseases and conditions encompassing symptomology, description diagnostic techniques (tests and such) likely to be employed, treatment options, and the range of expected prognoses--in a nutshell, what do I have, how will they find out, what will they do to treat me, and what's the outlook in terms of cure and survival.
A wealth of reliable, understandable information is readily accessible to the lay person and accompanied by helpful illustrations.
I have relied on this book for years to help me deal intelligently with health matters involving my friends, my family, and myself. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to empower themselves to be a prudent steward of health and well being.
The update is most welcome, as the dynamic pace of medicine has yielded therapeutic innovations (in particular new pharmaceuticals) that provide much happier endings to many of the disease entries.

Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Animal Abuse: Linking the Circles of Compassion for Prevention and Intervention
Average Reviews:

This book is very abundant in resarch and exploration of the link between animal abuse and intimate violence. Addtionally, they focus on children and pet-care programs in the latter part of the book. This portion is signifcant since these programs assist in preventing further domestic violence and animal abuse. Frank Ascione and Phil Arkow produced a very good book, and this book should be read by all within the domestic violence field, vetererians, and law enforcement officials.

Evidence is mounting that animal abuse, frequently embedded in families scarred by domestic violence and child abuse and neglect, often predicts the potential for other violent acts. As early intervention is critical in the prevention and reduction of aggression, this boo encourages researchers and professionals to recognize animal abuse as significant problem and a human public-health issue that should be included as a curriculum topic in training. The book is an interdisciplinary sourcebook of original essays that examines the relations between animal maltreatment and human interpersonal violence, expands the scope of research in this growing area, and provides practical assessment and documentation strategies to help professionals confronting violence do their jobs better by attending to these connections. This book brings together, for the first time, all of the leaders in this emerging field. They examine contemporary research and programmatic issues, encourage cross-disciplinary interactions, and describe innovative programs in the field today. The book also includes vivid first-person accounts from "survivors" whose experiences included animal maltreatment among other forms of family violence.

Vaccine A: The Covert Government Experiment That's Killing Our Soldiers--And Why GI's Are Only The First Victims Review

Vaccine A: The Covert Government Experiment That's Killing Our Soldiers--And Why GI's Are Only The First Victims
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is frightening if true. The premise, set forth in the introduction and detailed in the book, is that the US government has used experimental vaccines from the Desert Shield / Storm era through today on GI's and other individuals. Author Gary Matsumoto methodically - sometimes excruciatingly so - grinds through facts and builds a circumstantial case supported by nearly 60 pages of endnotes.
Matsumoto was the first writer to publish a connection between the anthrax vaccine and the Gulf War Syndrome, doing so in an article published in Vanity Fair in 1999. His book, Vaccine A, is the spawn of that article.
Matsumoto does not have an evident bias of distrust in the US government or even the military. He acknowledges the need to develop and use a vaccine effective against anthrax. He is even willing to understand the failure to obtain knowing consent from those injected with an unlicensed vaccine due to the exigent nature of the Gulf conflict and the fear of biological agents in the possession of Saddam Hussein - at least initially.
As his investigation progresses, Matsumoto learns that one of the ingredients of Vaccine A (anthrax vaccine) is squalene. This oily substance is an adjuvant that stimulates the immune system. Unfortunately, this oil too closely resembles oils found in the body and as a result, the body's immune system begins to attack itself. This causes a plethora of autoimmune diseases.
Disturbingly, it appears that a wealth of scientific knowledge about the dangers of squalene was available to a thorough researcher prior to the Gulf War. Even more disturbing is the unwillingness of the US military to acknowledge more than ten years later the fact that squalene in Vaccine A caused a large number of "casualties".
Matsumoto asserts that the US has stockpiled 75,000,000 doses of Vaccine A with squalene for future use by the military and civilians. He further assets that the several other vaccines have been or are in the process of being developed with the adjuvant of squalene.
At times, this book is like reading a textbook - it is grueling. However, the acquired knowledge is worth the effort. This book should be read (or at least the introduction) by anybody who has family or friends in the military or is contemplating a career in the military. Apparently, enemy fire and friendly fire are not the only risks of military service.
In the "how I would improve this book" category I suggest photographs of key individuals mentioned in the book. Also, it would be helpful include a complete copy of the insert that accompanies the current anthrax vaccine.
A tough book to read - but five stars all the same.

Vaccine-A uncovers a story of betrayal -- the betrayal of the men and women who serve in the armed forces, the betrayal of medical ethics, and the betrayal of the American people by military and civilian leaders sworn to defend and protect. Veteran journalist Gary Matsumoto shows that the worst friendly-fire incident in military history came from something no soldier had any reason to think would harm him: a vaccine administered by the military's own medics. When troops went to the Middle East to fight the Gulf War in 1991 and the Iraq War in 2003, many -- perhaps thousands -- received an experimental anthrax vaccine instead of the FDA-approved vaccine. Without their knowledge or consent, the U. S. government used them as human guinea pigs in a massive medical experiment that went disastrously wrong.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE: The Founder of the I Have a Future Program Shares His Vision for Young America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Henry W. Foster, M.D. has spent his entire professional life working to improve the health of people, especially poor people. One of his pet projects has been the "I Have a Future Program" which works to keep teenagers healthy, motivated and in school. Much of the work of the program has to do with sex education and lowering the rate of teenage pregnancy in the US. When Dr. Foster was nominated by President Clinton to be Surgeon General, he was attacked and labeled falsely as an abortion doctor. To his credit, Dr. Foster uses this book to talk about how he became interested in medicine, how he worked to get through his education, and the many aspects of his work that have motivated him, and spends little time defending his innocence. While he was disappointed that he was not confirmed as Surgeon General, he moved right on to the next goals he set for himself. Dr. Foster makes it clear just how much commitment and hard work is required to make a success of oneself, but also stresses how fulfilling it is to work for what one believes in. He also talks in detail about the life of young people, especially young people of color who fail to find something to strive for. The book is well-written and easy to understand. Recommended for young people and adults alike.

The Monster at Our Door: The Global Threat of Avian Flu Review

The Monster at Our Door: The Global Threat of Avian Flu
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Another great 'Doom, Doom, the End is Near' book. It may even be true.
But somehow after the prospect of nuclear war, then nuclear winter, Hong Kong flu, then Global Warming, AIDS, Ebola and so on you get just a bit jaded.
First the bad news. Avian Flu is a killer. The 1918 flu pandemic killed about 2.5% of the people it infected. This new one seems to kill about 50% (this book says two out of every three) of the people that get infected. It is rapidly spreading. This week there were cases reported in Turkey, right on the threshold of Europe (Birds do fly around a lot).
Second, the good news. In order for the virus to really be deadly to large numbers of people it has to mutate to make it capable of being transmitted from human to human instead of just bird to human as it is now. When it mutates it isn't as likely to be as deadly as it is now. A virus only has so much ability to carry things around. If it develops a 'skin' tough enough to travel by air, it will likely lose some of its deadlyness. Why? Because of all the flu's around this is about the worst. When it mutates, the skin is going to take more virus stuff, and some of that comes from the deadly stuff. Ebola has a higher mortality than Avian flu, the virus can't live outside of body fluids. Still at 50% mortality for Avian Flu, even if it goes to 5%, that's still worse than the 1918 variety. Another good point is that all of the governments around the world from Viet Nam to the UN are concentrating on the problem It's going to be tracked very carefully. As soon as an airborne variety mutates, a vaccine will be developed on an emergency basis.
Is there a risk -- absolutely. It it an emergency -- not yet. Is the book worth reading, absolutely, even if for no other reason than to see how our Government operates when faced with problems like this.

From the acclaimed writer The Nation calls the "master of disaster prose," a terrifying forecast of a new global threat."We are talking at least seven million deaths, but maybe more-10 million, 20 million, and the worst case, 100 million."-Shigeru Omi, Regional Director, western pacific office of the World Health Organization, November 2004Avian influenza is a viral asteroid on a collision course with humanity. In 1918, a pandemic strain of influenza killed at least 40 million people in three months. Now, leading researchers believe, another world catastrophe is imminent.A virus of astonishing lethality, known as H5N1, has become entrenched in the poultry and wild bird populations of East Asia. It kills two out of every three people it infects. The World Health Organization warns that it is on the verge of mutating into a super-contagious pandemic form that could visit several billion homes within two years. In this urgent and extraordinarily frightening book, Mike Davis reconstructs the scientific and political history of a viral apocalypse in the making, exposing the central roles of agribusiness and the fast-food industries, abetted by corrupt governments, in creating the ecological conditions for the emergence of this new plague. He also details the scandalous failure of the Bush administration, obsessed with hypothetical "bio-terrorism," to safeguard Americans from the greatest biological threat since HIV/AIDS.

Experiencing Politics: A Legislator's Stories of Government and Health Care (California/Milbank Series on Health and the Public) Review

Experiencing Politics: A Legislator's Stories of Government and Health Care (California/Milbank Series on Health and the Public)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Former Massachusetts state legislator John McDonough takes readers from the theory to reality of practical politics in a surprisingly unegotistical fashion. He uses various theories about why and why political actors do what they do as they go about their business to introduce his own experiences.
The obligatory academics (the book is a valuable text book as well as a good read) are clear and easy to get through. The political stories are particularly informative and of great interest to people who want to know some of the 15,000 ways and by-ways that bills can travel to become law.
Experiencing Politics is instructive and should be required reading for zealots who'd rather make a point than make a difference. Of particular interest to all the victims of Narcissistic Advocates Personality Disorder (the Nader types, the zealots, the self righteous as only the Boston/Cambridge axis can breed) are McDonough's experiences and observations as an advocate for housing and as one who tried to ameliorate the impact of the loss of rent control.
Massachusetts political junkies and students of legislative process should love this book. McDonough doesn't describe his role as that of savior or saint, but as an interested student and practitioner of practical progressive politics who wants to be a player in his legislature.

The Freedom Agenda: Why a Balanced Budget Amendment is Necessary to Restore Constitutional Government Review

The Freedom Agenda: Why a Balanced Budget Amendment is Necessary to Restore Constitutional Government

This book could not be more timely. Nor could it be more helpful in explaining how we got into this debt crisis and how we can get out of it. In The Freedom Agenda, Senator Lee makes the insightful, but too often overlooked argument that with every debt-limit increase, Congress authorizes the federal government to expand its size, scope, reach, and cost, always at the expense our our individual liberty. With each such expansion, the book explains, we as Americans become less free.
I would recommend this book to anyone because we, as a country, would be well-served to develop an understanding regarding (1) the limited purpose of the federal government, (2) the connection between the expansion of government (especially at the national level) and the erosion of individual liberty, and (3) the fact that the only way to break the cycle of government expansion is to restrict Congress's borrowing power. Senator Lee explains complex constitutional principles in a concise format that is easy to understand.
If you want to convince your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family members that the federal government has gone too far and you need ammunition for your argument, you would do well to buy this book. It is a quick read, and very well worth the modest investment of time and money.

The Killer Strain: Anthrax and a Government Exposed Review

The Killer Strain: Anthrax and the Exposed Medicine
I am peruvian medical , and for some years , have been investigating anthrax in Peru, reason why caused to much interest for me the appearance of the book: The Killer Strain.
The book that narrates the events related to the first outbreak of bioterrorismo in the U.S.A., submerges to us in the interior of the scientific work during the epidemic , show some more than appears in the scientific journals . Although the author certainly has obtained much related information to this epidemic, probably, the lack of a biomedica formation, has taken it to an incomplete vision of the epidemic of anthrax. The book shows some mistakes that reflect the nonmedica formation of the author, as a sample : in the figures of the book, call as symptoms to the injuries of the skin, instead of use signs. Would had been ideal that some medical professional help in revising or writing the book.
Maybe , the great problem in analyzing this epidemic is that in the world exist few experts in anthrax As the same author recognizes in her book, many doctors what participated in the epidemic , never has been sight a case of anthrax. (1) For that reason many mistakes that exist during the epidemic maybe has been unnoticed. Some of these faults in the epidemic, can be justified by the low degree of scientific knowledge with respect to this pathology, maybe for example : not to diagnose inhalational anthrax.
Inhalation anthrax is the main clinical form in the bioterrorism scope given its high mortality, however early diagnosis (a time when treatment can be effective),(2) is rather difficult to achieve In their initial stage symptoms of inhalation anthrax are very similar to influenza .
Although the cutaneous form has low mortality rates and is thus, considered as less important in a bioterrorist attack, its diagnosis may serve as an epidemiological alerta and lead, indirectly, to the early search for possible inhalation anthrax cases. These difficulties in early recognition were observed in the recent bioterrorism event with anthrax in the United States. In the bioterrorism- related outbreak of anthrax , in october 2001, the first cases were not for inhalation, but cutaneos , the detection of these cases would likely iniate the epidemiological investigation more precociously and maybe diminished even more the mortality in this outbreak. Because of this, it is necessary for physicians to learn to recognize cutaneous anthrax at its early stage.
Contrary to what occurs with the inhalation form, cutaneous anthrax there are well defined clinical characteristics and is relatively easy to diagnose clinically, to however, the early stage of cutaneous anthrax often remains undiagnosed, probably due to many reasons: a) It is to rare pathology; b) The this physician associates pathology mainly with to annoys stage necrotic to ulcer and; c) Absence of pain in the cutaneous injury makes the patient recognize the cutaneous injury annoys and delay seeking medical attention clinical Emphasis on early recognition of cutaneous anthrax is highly used in anthrax endemic area in peruvians andens, as part of the traditional medicine knowledge developed by these communities due to the absence of physicians and it could be useful to the field of bioterrorism. In Peru, farmers emphasize the clinical recognition of cutaneous anthrax in an early stage and call it "waytacha" (A quechua term that means bad flower) (3).
In this outbreak , although is certain were errors of the government and of institutions, there were also medical mistakes, that are necessary to recognize them so that they do not repeat in the future. The most critical component for bioterrorism outbreak detection is the doctor ( 4 ), and the great medical mistake of this epidemic was not undiagnose anthrax by inhalation but not to diagnose the cases of cutaneous anthrax, the detection of these cases would also , of to be certain the relation between hijjackers and anthrax ( 5 ), also initiate the investigation related to hijjackers and maybe, help to prevent the tragedy of September 11.
This epidemic more than show a exposed government , show to an exposed medicine, exposed to anthrax , a disease that does not even manage to know nor to control.
