Drawing on research in the social sciences, cultural studies and social policy it presents a concise summary of current theories a of sexual orientation, discusses the growth of contemporary lesbian and gay communities, and reveals the prejudice and discrimination which still exist. Using a reader-friendly approach developed during ten years teaching health and social care professionals, the author reveals how and why the needs of this group remain largely unmet, and suggests simple strategies for change that can be implemented by concerned practitioners. The book is written at an introductory level, but in enough depth to be useful reference for practising health professionals as well as trainees. Further reading lists are provided at the end of each chapter, as well as exercise designed to help readers become aware of their own attitudes and possible prejudices.
