(More customer reviews)This book is amazing. It's from Stedman's so of course it's very user friendly and up to date. It takes words and phrases of all specialities and puts it into one concise book. It's thumb notched (as the book is pretty big) making it easy to get to each section. It's also cross-referenced (for example, looking up SUDDEN cardiac death, also under sudden CARDIAC death, and sudden cardiac DEATH. Hear some type of classification or scale, but can't make out the word? No problem, just look under either of those headings, and all types are listed, from all specialties. I would compare this book to the very pricey Medical Phrase Index (which is listed as one of the references in making this book) that is used primarily for coding and billing. There is also a very handy appendix that lists commonly used abbreviations. I got an incredible deal for my book from an amazon seller, making it all the better (and it was new). This is a necessity for a medical transcriptionist, and I would imagine a life-saver for any new MT student. Seriously, if you're a transcriptionist, you really shouldn't be without "the big purple book."

(More customer reviews)I work at a very well known hospital in the suburbs of Boston in a department where medical terminology is a must! Having had no schooling on this particular subject, I was asked to enroll in a course at the hospital specifically for staff. I paid for this book by Ann Ehrlich on the first day of class and have to admit, gasped when I saw the thickness and content of the book. Not having any background on this subject, I expected to have an extremely hard time picking the terminology 'lingo' up but I was in for a pleasant surprise! This book is not only very easy to follow and understand, it's also perfect for a person who is being introduced to the medical world. After a few months, some of the longest and most complicated sounding words are rolling off my tongue. I even amaze myself when I say them! Considering this book is a mandatory part of the hospitals class which consists of hundreds, I'm not at all surprised why they chose this book as the main tool. Yes, we have a doctor assisting us with the words along with the book but I truly believe I could learn this information alone. The book is that clear and easy. So, if you find the need to learn medical terminology and are not as lucky as me in being offered a free class, I'd recommend you buy this book and learn it yourself. This is a book that my hospital has used from edition one according to the instructor. Quick learning at your pace!

(More customer reviews)I just took this course at a local college and I thought this textbook was excellent. The materials are well laid out and the book includes many photos and drawings of medical procedures. The book includes the following sections for each chapter: anatomy, combining forms, prefixes, suffixes, terms built from word parts, terms not built from word parts, procedures, diseases, acronymns, and many excellent practice sections in each chapter. If you follow the layout of the chapters and do the practice exercies then you will do well in this class. Medical terminology is very logical and practical. Good luck!

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary Review

When I recently bought a Taber's as a gift for a future colleague, I was surprised at the easier 'navigation' possible with Taber's (the tabs are excellent) and I was impressed with the quality & quantity of the illustrations. I believe this is the best choice for both health care providers and consumers.

The book is easy to follow and prepares you to read medical reports and to learn thousands of medical terms, including diagnostic, symptomatic, and surgical terms. The pronunciations help me pronounce words correctly when I talk to the medical staff at the hospital.
I recommend this book highly.

(More customer reviews)This book makes learning medical terminology very easy. At first I was skeptical of the "programmed learning" approach - it seemed much too repetitive and grade school-ish. However, I found that as I finished each chapter in the workbook, I retained the majority of the information. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of medical terminology without putting forth a great deal of effort. I found the workbook to be fun, and the CD, which includes sample quizzes and learning activities, was extremely helpful.

Medical Meanings: A Glossary of Word Origins, Second Edition Review

(More customer reviews)Dr. Haubrich's glossary is a clearly a labor of love as well as expertly researched tome of medical meanings. For those interested in etymology, his book is as much as a therapeutic massage to the intellect as Barnette's book (Ladyfingers & Nun's Tummies) is a sensual, cerebral tweeking of the palate. I stumbled across an advertisement for the book in a medical journal. Having spent a few months researching medical word origins, I gave up after reading this delightful book. It has no past (or future) competition. The advertisment was meant for physicians, but I believe that a much wider audience might well enjoy his meticulous research and muted humor. I enjoyed his mini-essay on the origin of the "Western blot", the tables explaining number and color origins, his whimsical asides on otherwise obscure (and pretentious) medical terminologies. I paid full price, and I would advocate for an amazon.com discount, as well as a pairing of the book with other more popular books on word origins. I would hope that the author plans a sequel, paperback edition and/or periodic updates to this delicious "word salad" of medical etymology! If William Safire uses this book for his column, he must give Dr. Haubrich proper attribution. He deserves it.

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary with CD-ROM (Dorland's Medical Dictionary) Review

(More customer reviews)As a medical textbook author, I felt a need to add Dorland's to my increasing collection of medical dictionaries, so I ordered a copy from Amazon.com. Now that I have used it for a couple of weeks, I can remember why I chose Stedman's back when my budget was more limited and I compared the two dictionaries with an eye to buying just one of them.I am repeatedly disappointed when I look up terms in Dorland's. Pronunciations are often lacking (e.g., for the cranial foramina and skeletal muscles), the illustrations are meager and inferior to Stedman's, and many terms are missing. Dorland's doesn't even define first-, second-, and third-degree burns, for example, and the levator labii superioris muscle and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi are completely missing from both the body of the dictionary and the appendix of muscle tables. Such omissions reflect either inexcusable carelessness or inexplicable editorial caprice. A professional writer or physician should have Dorland's on hand as a backup source. I find it useful for corroborating some facts and getting alternative meanings of words. But I still go to Stedman's as my first resort; it does a far better job. For a student or professional person with budget for just one good medical dictionary, I recommend Stedman's or the more economical but very good Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary.

(More customer reviews)My review is not based on a comparison of other medical dictionaries. With that in mind, this particular dictionary (book) is easy to read, has good illustrations, and about 30 pages of excellent human anatomy diagrams in the middle of the book. The CD is, as stated, a bonus; have not found a need to use it, but good to have. What I do not like about this "book," is that it was printed as a short, thick book. It would have been better to have a wider/thinner book, rather than a short/thick book; the illustrations wouldn't be so small otherwise. Finally, I like that the dictionary has ABC tabs to make finding a word quick and easy.
