Harvard Med: The Story Behind America's Premier Medical School and the Making of America's Do ctors Review

Harvard Med: The Story Behind America's Premier Medical School and the Making of America's Do ctors
Average Reviews:

After I read the book "Becoming a doctor," I became interested in reading books about medical students. So I started reading this book. I have to say that I am disappointed about its content. Although the author declared in the beginning that this is not a book about any particular medical students, I still expected that he would actually tell us some inside stories about Harvard Med.
From all I can remember, he only talked about orientation day, cadaver dissection period, then graduation day. It happens at all other medical schools. Other than the superficial things, he could have spent some time on explaining and exploring the extra materials that Harvard Med provides. I still do not know much about how the students at Harvard are learning medicine. What makes Harvard's teaching so different and so much better than other medical schools? He failed to explain it.
This content doesn't really fit with the book title.
Some of the chapters are not really related to Harvard Med. It has quite a few intensive personal interviews. However, it seems that the author were using those people to express his own views about the impersonal services HMOs that are taking quality patient time which doctors may provide. That is all he talks about, and there was no other kinds of opinions that those doctors, students were expressing. And this part of the conversation is over expressed in this book.
Overall, it is not all about Harvard med. It is really just a collection of random Harvard Med articles.

Geology and Health: Closing the Gap Review

Geology and Health: Closing the Gap
Average Reviews:

The Editors of 'Geology and Health' have produced a collection of papers that will be of great interest to medical specialists, biologists, and geologists. Interdisciplinary studies on natural hazzards such as arsenic in groundwater and geochemical concentrations of toxic heavy metals in soils are required to understand the origins and pathways of some diseases. This new interest in geomedicine has been stimulated by EPA regulations and by advanced laboratory intstruments that produce extremely accurate chemical data on toxic concentrations in water, soil, and air. This will be an excellent textbook to stimulate university students to explore a vast domain between public health and earth sciences.

I have worn out my old copy and need another. I keep the book as a kitchen aide. The most helpfull feature of the book is the 2 week suggested selections for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The selections are easy to shop for, easy to make, good to eat and the rest of the book allows one to substitue various foods on the weekly meal plans.

High Blood Pressure Lowered Naturally: Your Arteries Can Clean Themselves Review

High Blood Pressure Lowered Naturally: Your Arteries Can Clean Themselves
Average Reviews:

This book is a thorough guide to many strategies for lowering blood pressure, dropping cholesterol, losing weight, and becoming healthier overall. It is a thoughtful, well-researched compendium of many research studies, presented in a straight-talk, no-nonsense fashion. It discusses the physiology of blood pressure in laymen's terms, and analyzes many nutritional elements that can affect BP, such as calcium, magnesium, caffeine, and fiber. It also describes various blood pressure medications and their effects on the body.
I love this guide; it has been very useful to me. I consult it often. I discovered a reference to the Pritikin program in one chapter on nutrition, followed that, and dropped my cholesterol by 60 points in 3 weeks!!!
I'm buying a copy for my mom and plan to show my copy to my doctor, who is very impressed by my new cholesterol numbers!

Etheridge's text tells an amazing tale of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from its inception during World War II to eradicate malaria in the American South to its present-day status as the leading authority on innumerable infectious diseases throughout the world. Through her writing, it is possible to understand how the CDC was created and evolved, subject not only to the need to respond to health problems across the globe, but also to political and domestic pressures from within.

In the only history of its kind, Etheridge traces the development of the Centers for Disease Control from its inception as a malaria control unit during World War II through the mid-1980s . The eradication of smallpox, the struggle to identify an effective polio vaccine, the unraveling of the secrets of Legionnaires' disease, and the shock over the identification of the HIV virus are all chronicled here. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and source documents, Etheridge vividly recreates the vital decision-making incidents that shaped both the growth of this institution as well as the state of public health in this country for the last five decades. We follow the development of the institution as it was transformed by the will and the imagination of remarkable individuals such as Dr. Joseph Mountin, one of the first heads of the CDC. Often characterized as abrasive and impatient, Mountin pushed the CDC to become a vital player in eradicating the threat of communicable disease in the United States. Others such as Dr. Alexander Langmuir brought the expertise necessary to establish epidemiology as one of the primary functions of the CDC.Created to serve the states and to answer any call for help whether routine or extraordinary, the CDC is now widely recognized as one of the world's premier public health institutions.

The Business of Medical Practice: Profit Maximizing Skills for Savvy Doctors Review

The Business of Medical Practice: Profit Maximizing Skills for Savvy Doctors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dear Medical Colleagues,
This book is a must read for all of us who are practicing in the current managed care environment. It is not important if you are an MD, DO, DDS, DPM, DC, vet or PHD, we are all negatively impacted, and the editor and his contributing writers explain why and what we all can do about it. Although it won't be easy or fast. Medical students will be astounded at the complexity of contemporary practice, as well.
The book is divided into three parts: qualitative, quantitative and the futuristic aspects of healthcare practice. But, I must warn you that if you are an employed doctor, rather than an empolyer physician, you will feel left out since you are a captive agent. At least the independent doctor still has some control left over his or her destiny; for now. Accordingly, Dr. David Edward Marcinko; MBA, CFP, and his team, explain how you can increase your revenues, decrease your expenses and operating assets, to increase your office's Return On Investment (ROI).
In the first section, number crunching, spreadsheets, managerial and cost accounting techniques rule. Normally, somewhat mundane, it is interesting how the author make these numerics "come-alive" when real dollars are attached to the figures.
In the next section on the other hand, the qualitative aspects of medical practice are reviewed. Such topics as negotiation skills, managed care contracting, IT systems, case management and UR are given their due, along with billing, legal, anti-trust, IPA, CPT coding and asset protection issues.
Finally, the authors project their opinions about healthcare in the future; which does not look good for any of us. In fact, I won't reveal their prognosticatons about the standard of fiscal care, medical ethics, or doctors acting like passive lemmings, but they are indeed so chilling that you will just have to read this thought provoking book for yourself.
If you are a doctor, and think you know all about managed care, you will be humbled by this fact filled tome. Not reading this book definately places your practice, profession and living in peril. Do not miss it. This editor is a real doctor and business professional.

This is a reference book but it is easy to read as it follows a whole raft of people family and friends through essential tests like Paps, blood screening for cholesterol, diabetes screening, all things women especially older women need. Kind of a library book but would be a good reference book in the home especially where there are older parents.I read through the whole thing in a couple of days and found it informative especially the section on genetic testing.

"Just what the doctor and the patient ordered—up-to-date, clear, informative, and, most of all, helpful."—Leo B. Twiggs, M.D., director, Institute for Women's Health, University of Miami"This is a well-written, thoughtful, and eminently readable guide through the often complex maze of preventive medical care."—Beth Barnet, M.D., University of Maryland School of Medicine Every year, millions of healthy women undergo a variety of screening tests without understanding why, or the meaning of the outcome. If you are among those women, overwhelmed by information and baffled by results, this is the book you've been waiting for. In straightforward, reader-friendly prose, A Woman's Concise Guide to Common Medical Tests surveys a wide variety of standard tests commonly suggested by doctors. Using the recommendations of the U.S. Preventative Health Services Task Force as a starting point, physicians Michele C. Moore and Caroline M. de Costa describe and explain screening tests for STDs and other communicable diseases, diabetes, thyroid disease, bone loss, various genetic tests, pregnancy, and cancer (including breast, colon, and skin). A section on common blood tests demystifies the numerical results that can be virtually impossible to interpret for women outside the medical profession. The authors detail what is considered "normal" as well as what's not—to help women make sense of their results. As the health-care industry continues to evolve, the amount of medical information available to women about their health can be overwhelming and confusing. Without being encyclopedic or intimidating, A Woman's Concise Guide to Common Medical Tests offers all the facts you need about screening tests, all in one place.

They Don't Teach That in Medical School: Sex With a Ball Bearing and Other Unusual Stories

The doctor who wrote this book must have had a lot of unusual requests for surgury from people who had very unusual problems. He also saw some unusual, funny and embarrassing situations on people who experimented with their bodies sexually. It all semes to fit together into a fine, technical and funny narative which was very enjoyable to read. The one thing that made this book less than perfect was the time spent on the detailed explainations of exactl6y how the surgeries were done, right down to the last technical detail. I bit much for us non-doctor types. It could have been more written for us layman and less for interns. Other than that fact, it is well written, in plain english, funny and entertaining. It is well worth the price.

Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Technology (Medical Science) Review

Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Technology (Medical Science)
Average Reviews:

Drs. Hoult and Chen performed some of the fundamental work describing the nature of magnetic fields and their interaction with biological samples in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here they compile their work in one volume and expand upon it to provide a clear picture about these interactions. The most valuable portion of this book can be found in chapters 3 through 5, which contain the basic description of magnetic fields, RF signals, RF noise, and the working basics of the NMR spectrometer. These items make this an invaluable one-stop shop for information to the engineer or physicist needing to know the fundamental classical field interactions at work in MRI. For these individuals, this book is a must have.

Nuclear magnetic resonance is now widely used in hospitals and research laboratories worldwide for medical purposes. Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the first book to concentrate on how the instrumentation involved works rather than on the applications of the technique. In order to help the reader fully understand how an NMR imaging or spectroscopy system works the book takes an in-depth look at the principles behind the different components of the machine. Starting with a short history of the developments of nuclear magnetic resonance, the authors go on to describe all the different areas of instrumentation, such as the receiver and the magnet. A full explanation of the electronics and computer hardware and software appears for the first time in book form, completing this thorough view of an NMR system. Each chapter builds from a basic to a more sophisticated level of understanding and numerous illustrations help the reader to grasp the concepts. For the most part, mathematical descriptions appear at the ends of chapters, to place the emphasis of the book on the understanding of underlying principles. Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging will be invaluable to all medical physicists, technicians, researchers and engineers working with NMR, containing as it does both theoretical and practical data to enable users to get the most out of their machines.

For people like me. Even if you have had no exposure to Excell before, by the end of the book, you will be able to complete difficult statistical analysis using the excell application. This include linear regression and matrix math. Dr. Veney uses real world health care examples to set up each task, and gives very good step by step instructions. In addition, the explainations given are written in basic english, and it often feels as if you are having a conversation with the author. Obviously statistics is still a difficult task for many, but this book does make it easier. I used it for class, and then found I actually pulled it out frequently during my work (in public health) to set up certain data and analyze them properly. My managers and bosses have always been surprised at my ability to compute- but really I am just using the set ups in this book.

Strangers at the Bedside: A History of How Law and Bioethics Transformed Medical Decision-Making Review

Strangers at the Bedside: A History of How Law and Bioethics Transformed Medical Decision-Making
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What do you do with a book that in spite of disagree with the vantage point of the author, you have to admit that the points he raises and the stand he takes has some validity? That an author can cause the reader to stop and think about firmly held belief systems, is indicative of a good writer in my opinion.
The author of this bioethical treatise is not a physician. He is a sociologist, and he is giving the historical background to the immense changes in how the American public views its medical establishment. In the process of becoming involved in ethics in the medical world, Rothman had to come in close contact with those he was writing about...physicians. I get the feeling that he was and to a point still in awe of the great men and the great minds he has been exposed to. Occasionally, the book seemed to be biased in favor of the physicians. A book such as this cannot be written without showing the author's own biases; author's can only admit that they harbor particular biases towards those they are writing about.
In many issues Rothman comes down solidly on behalf of the physicians, whether or not they brought about the changes in the public's attitudes towards those who work in medicine. Rothman bemoans the fact that the public has involved lawyers, bioethicists, and politicians in what used to be the private domain of physicians. Yet he writes and explains the history behind this lowering of pedestals for doctors and medical researchers...all the while trying to explain why physicians felt their patients should rely 'on those who know and understand' (read that to mean physicians think most patients and families are too stupid to understand basic concepts).
This book actually gives a good and vitally important background into the movements for individual rights and the exposure of unethical experimentation and medical treatment which led to the creation of new standards for medical care and research, as well as the installment of Internal Research Boards (IRBs) which are suppose to act as brakes on over-ambitious and unethical practices. Unfortunately, it is all too clear in recent media reports that even IRBs in universities and hospitals are not enough to protect the American public from research by those not interested in protecting the patients and alleviating pain, but rather shows more concern for keeping the grant money coming, fame, and doing science merely for the sake of doing science ('because we can!) John Hopkins obviously hasn't changed its attitudes over 30 some odd years towards the rights of the individual, since they are continuing to attract attention and controversy because of unethical research.
This book is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in bioethics. Even if the reader does not agree with the author, the book provides a different, and somewhat valid reflection of the medical establishment's views towards the infringement of their previously existing rights in determining patient care and the moral standards of research. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

Eat, Drink, and Be Happy: How Delicious Foods Can Help You Lose Weight, Balance Your Hormones, and Defeat Depression
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Due to my own personal struggles with health and sometimes, weight, I have read just about every book on food, diets, nutrition, and any combination thereof. Admittedly, I tried most of them as well. Without success. This is the first book that makes it all sound so easy to put together eating habits that would help me to choose foods that would be both pleasurable and beneficial. The format is easy to read and follow. Since this book does not exclude any particular food group or promote 'fads', it allows for personalization of favorite foods while still getting in the necessary nutrients needed to promote a more healthful state. It is appropriate for meat lovers as well as vegitarians. Sources of protein are well covered throughout the book. I made a list of my favorite foods from each chapter while I was reading it, then made a list containing each food item only once after I finished the book. My grocery bill has come down, my weight is coming down, my energy is up, and my stress over which foods to eat has vanished. To the Authors... Thank - you !

Medical Blunders: Amazing True Stories of Mad, Bad, and Dangerous Doctors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this book up as a birthday present not long after we had a bit of an incident in a local hospital, involving a 17cm pair of scissors being left inside some poor woman after surgery. Bet there's a scrub nurse going around saying "Scissors... Scissors..." somewhere!
Youngson and Schott have put together a very interesting and, let's face it, pretty damning picture of the medical profession, in ancient, mediaeval and recent times. It starts with a review of the high-technology wizardry that has been flogged off over the years, and moves through a variety of strange and often sickening stories. Some of these stories - like the concept of 'Blue Light Healing" - are just plain weird and quite funny, whilst others - like the stories of lobotomy and the thalidomide tragedy - are quite depressing.
I'm a medical student. Whilst reading this didn't exactly put me off my course, it certainly gives pause for thought. Not a light read, but very, very interesting.
