Billionaire Doctor, Ordinary Nurse (Mills & Boon Medical Romance) Review

Billionaire Doctor, Ordinary Nurse (Mills and Boon Medical Romance)
Average Reviews:

Growing up, nurse Annie always had issues with her weight and those issues come to rear their ugly head when she discovers her bridesmaid dress doesn't fit and there is only six days until the wedding. If that weren't enough after a grueling workout, in an attempt to squeeze into the dress, she meets the new doctor at work, Iosef. His family is the next thing to royalty in Sydney, Australia and for some reason he takes an instant and intense dislike to Annie. All that grumpiness melts away though at the wedding that ends with them in bed together. Iosef has family obligations and can't have a relationship but still their feelings are too strong to be denied and they start seeing each other.
I greatly enjoyed this novel. Most of the time I had no clue what was going on with the medical jargon being I get all my medical knowledge from ER, Grey's Anatomy and House and things are obviously done a LOT differently in Australia, but for me that was part of the charm. The life at the hospital and the patients where interesting and very well done, along with the budding romance between the reserved Iosef and the insecure Annie. I would have easily and unequivocally given this light years better than the average harlequin five stars but, like with all harlequins there is nothing from the hero's point of view and so when we suddenly realize the reason he kept his relationship with Annie a dirty little secret I wanted to smack him, not forgive him. There was a point about 2/3s of the way through the book that was the PERFECT time to explain what was happening but he didn't. It bugs me when dishonesty keeps couples apart and if we are supposed to believe he loved her then why they heck would he let her get away rather than just be honest with her?
Aside from all that this was a wonderful story. A typical harlequin, but with characters you could relate to, interesting setting and touching love story.
4 stars.

Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities: A Guide to the Medical Literature Review

Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities: A Guide to the Medical Literature

(More customer reviews)
If you're wondering if natural, undrugged, or midwife-supported childbirth is for you, you need look no further than the pages of this book for the definitive answer. If you're already a believer in the non-medicalized approach to childbearing, this book will provide the scientific ammunition you need to answer the challenges of your friends, family and doctor. Henci Goer has assembled a comprehensive array of the latest scientific literature about childbirth, and the amazing thing is that the science is on the side of alternative birthing, both in terms of maternal and neo-natal safety.

Anyone working to improve the childbearing experience and help women avoid unnecessary intervention has encountered numerous obstetric myths or old doctors' tales. And while the evidence in the medical literature may be solidly, often unequivocably, against whatever the doctor said, without access to that evidence, the pregnant woman is quite reasonably going to follow her doctor. This book is an attempt to make the medical literature on a variety of key obstetric issues accessible to people who lack the time, expertise, access, or proximity to a medical library to research concerns on their own. This compact, accurate, yet understandable reference is designed for people without medical training and organized for easy access.

After an introductory chapter giving basic information about the different types of medical studies, how to evaluate them, and some basic statistical concepts, Goer provides chapters on cesarean issues, pregnancy and labor management, and a review of alternative approaches. Each chapter begins with a stated myth, followed by an examination of the reality. Goer then analyzes the mainstream belief, pointing out its fallacies. Then comes a list of significant points gleaned from the studies and keyed to her abstracts. Next is the outline by which the abstracts are grouped. Finally come the numbered abstracts of relevant articles published, in most cases, after 1980. The book concludes with a glossary of medical terms and an index. This compact, accurate, and understandable reference tool is designed for people without medical training as well as care givers.

What a Blessing She Had Chloroform: The Medical and Social Response to the Pain of Childbirth from 1800 to the Present Review

What a Blessing She Had Chloroform: The Medical and Social Response to the Pain of Childbirth from 1800 to the Present
Average Reviews:

The obvious problem this author has is that if you have not given birth or are not thinking about it, you may not be that interested in the topic. Actually, Caton does quite a good job of showing how debates about use of anesthesia in childbirth tie in to larger cultural debates about medicine, progress, and the meaning of pain. In simple language, and with a good effort at giving all points of view fairly, he goes over both the scientific history of how drugs became available for childbirth and the social history of how the public (including doctors) responded. Yes, I did read it just after I had my child -- and I enjoyed it. I live in Japan where the debate over ``natural'' childbirth rages on. I think this book would make a nice gift for your intelligent friend who's having a baby (for goodness' sake, she'll get enough stuffed animals from other people).

New Ways of Making Babies: The Case of Egg Donation (Medical Ethics) Review

New Ways of Making Babies: The Case of Egg Donation (Medical Ethics)

I found this book extremely well conceived and substantively outstanding. It provides a set of essays by philosophers, lawyers, sociologists, doctors, theologians, etc. in which critical ethical and policy issues raised by the new reproductive technologies are addressed. Moreover, it provides descriptions of policies and procedures at four different sorts of egg donation centers in various parts of the country. Finally, it provides recommendations by a board funded by respected foundation grantors and composed of people who would have been appointed to a public board were Congress and the President willing to have one on this controversial subject. It's a must for anyone who wants to know what is going on in this field.

Doctor Chopra Says: Medical Facts and Myths Everyone Should Know Review

Doctor Chopra Says: Medical Facts and Myths Everyone Should Know
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a student of Jim Rohn's materials for many years, and he always taught that you should get more than one opinion on things. He suggested reading more than one book on health, and then figuring out the best for yourself to remain healthy. That's one of the reasons I read multiple books on health and fitness. "Doctor Chopra Says: Medical Facts & Myths Everyone Should Know" by Dr. Sanjiv Chopra & Dr. Alan Lotvin with David Fisher is a very informative book on a variety of health issues. It contains new research and provides authoritative advice from many top medical experts to assist with living healthier, happier and longer.
After the Preface and Introduction, which are both longer than many books, the contents are divided into five parts. These are: Food and Drink; Drugs, Vitamins, and Supplements; Medicine; Alternate Medicine; and Health Risks. There is also a short four page conclusion where the author's "aced" life is mentioned. They share a couple of their regular health habits. (I have to admit, I'm going to incorporate some of what they do into my regular routine, including keeping two regular aspirin readily accessible regardless of where I am.)The chapters in the various parts answer many common questions and provide plenty of advice that is practical and explained in easy language. As the authors say in the Preface, they eliminate the hype and promises, and simply report what the evidence is on various health issues. Their goal was to provide a resource to help people with all of the confusing claims, and I believe they achieved their goal and then some. The book provides science-based evidence, produced by reliable clinical trials to support or debunk the most common medical questions. Some of the topics discussed in part one include coffee, green tea, pizza, nuts, spices, and if there really is a best diet. The second part has chapters on vitamin D, aspirin, marijuana, statins, and more. Part three addresses topics such as HIV, Alzheimer's, breast feeding, cancer, and the common cold among others. The next section, part 4, has chapters that include yoga, acupuncture, and meditating along with a few others. And finally, part five includes chapters on various risks such as stroke, drinking from plastic bottles, cell phone usage, sleep, and baldness among others.
Each chapter concludes with a short summery titled "Dr. Chopra Says." These are nice little conclusions that offer advice on how to implement or use the information provided in the chapter. The actual chapters contain a lot of examples, studies, and research to support the findings that the authors present. I also appreciated that even though the authors are both prominent Western doctors, the book contains the section on alternative medicine and they don't dismiss all alternative methods, but look at them with open eyes and even suggest some of them, while telling readers to steer clear of others. I also like that the book offers advice on how to determine for yourself what's real and what's not real in medicine, so you can better evaluate headlines, stories, and articles you come across in your quest for better health.
This is a very practical and useful book for the person wanting to learn more about how to take control of their own health. You can read the entire book from cover to cover, or read the chapters that most interest you at the moment. Regardless, all of the information can help you live healthier and I recommend you add this to your health and fitness reading list.

In a world of such blind extremism, violence and negativity The Abortion Delimma brings a refreshing, informative and easily read respite from the rantings. violent protests and assassinations of closed minded people. Miriam Claire brings some sanity and a breatht of fresh air to this complex issue. It helped me greatly in understanding my decision and the options available to me.
