Third New International Dictionary of the English Language Review

Third New International Dictionary of the English Language

There are only two definitive English language dictionaries: Webster's Third (W3) and the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
The OED has the advantage of scholarship, prestige and preeminence: it is generally regarded as the gold standard in the definition of English words. It achieves this primarily by citing historical books and manuscripts, going back in many cases to the dark ages, when the language itself was evolving. Comprising some 22 volumes and requiring more than three feet of shelf space, it is an impressive addition to anyone's library, albeit at a high cost. It is available, again at high cost, on CD ROM.
W3 is a single volume about four inches wide. It offers a precise definition of every word you will ever encounter (450,000 are listed) except for slang and jargon, obsolete words, technical vocabularies and recent additions to the language. It is not above providing an occasional literary allusion. It defines the English language.
Suppose you want to look up the word "synecdoche." Which of the following scenarios do you prefer?
(1) Find volume 10 of the OED and learn that Wyclif (1338) defined it as "whanne a part is set for al, either al is set for oo par . . ."
(2) Start computer, find CD ROM, load CD ROM, go to OED, step through program, find information, unload CD ROM, turn off computer, file CD ROM, go back to what you were doing in the first place.
(3) Open W3 and read "a figure of speech by which a part is put for a whole (as fifty sail for fifty ships) . . ."
W3 is THE dictionary. It belongs in everyone's home. At the listed price it is an incredible bargain. Highly recommended.

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition Review

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition

This is a fine dictionary. It even smells good. Too hefty to be portable, it is nevertheless a perfect desk dictionary, starting with a seventeen-page explanatory chart and notes, an essay on the English language, and a guide to pronunciation. te volume continues with excellent definitions that are sometimes accompanied by b&w line drawings, and finishes with sections on foreign words & phrases, biographical names, geographical names, signs & symbols in various fields of endeavo, punctuation, capitals & italics, documenting sources, forms of address and an index. [..]
This is the most comprehensive collegiate dictionary to date, with many new entries since 1996's tenth edition, and it is well organized wih a nice clean font (though it may be a bit troublesome for those who are far-sighted). It always amazes me that we can purchase so much information so inexpensively. This is a terrific resource -- it's time to update your dictionary!!

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (INDEXED) & Taber's Electronic Medical Dictionary CD-ROM V 3.0 Review

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (INDEXED) and Taber's Electronic Medical Dictionary CD-ROM V 3.0
Average Reviews:

I work in law not medicine. I bought Taber's because of the many personal injury cases with which I was involved. People talk about legal language - nothing compares to medical terminology.
I have found Taber's to be extremely helpful in translating the medical reports that pass across my desk. It is comprehensive and yet breaks down the terms, diseases and injuries into language that a non-medically trained mind (mine people!) can understand and explain so that a judge can understand.
And because life can never be too good, it is very easy to use. The diagrams and photos are excellent - at least to my non-medically trained mind. The indexing is top-notch.
I also gifted it to another legally trained friend of mine with the same glowing reviews. I fully recommend this title.

English-Russian & Russian-English Medical Dictionary Review

English-Russian and Russian-English Medical Dictionary

This is a small but very handy medical dictionary with good translations of all the common medical terms, in addition to some frequently used words you could imagine needing in a medical context (e.g. "research," "usual"). It is a nice size and weight, too, not too large and heavy. Typeface is reasonably easy to read. I am quite pleased.

Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary Review

I was 'raised' on Stedman's, the usual medical dictionary at my Med School. When I recently bought a Taber's as a gift for a future colleague, I was surprised at the easier 'navigation' possible with Taber's (the tabs are excellent) and I was impressed with the quality & quantity of the illustrations. I believe this is the best choice for both health care providers and consumers.
