TRACE EVIDENCE Review

TRACE EVIDENCE

The author's sister lives in Marion, so I knew this book was coming out almost a year ago and had been looking forward to it. I wasn't disappointed. This is a wonderful book, especially for people who are fans of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. The author is a criminalist and she includes a number of details involving forensic investigations, but she doesn't get so bogged down in the science that lay people would be lost or confused. Her writing style is fast-paced, fresh and exciting, although she could stand to cut down on the hyperbole a bit. Anyone who is at all familiar with the Cleveland area will recognize her locations. The characters are fresh and appealing, especially the heroine, Evelyn James, a thirty-something single mother who is dealing with a teenage daughter who is upset about her parents' divorce, while trying to solve the gruesome slayings of several young women just a few years older than her daughter. Life experieinces become tangled with the case, and the ending will have the reader on the edge of his/her seat. I had a hard time putting this book down, and finished it in 2 sessions. I envy anyone picking it up for the first time, because you are in for a surprising and exciting read.

The Silent Girl: A Rizzoli & Isles Novel Review

The Silent Girl: A Rizzoli and Isles Novel

I have loved all of Tess Gerritson's thrillers and this one The Silent Girl: A Rizzoli & Isles Novel is no exception. The story is set in Boston and has a strong sense of place when the plot develops. This story is about a chilling murder in Boston's china town where detective Jane Rizzoli finds a red haired woman murdered on a roof top with a severed hand which they find in the alley below. Between the detective and the medical examiner, Dr. Maura Isles, they look for clues. Some of the clues are given early in the book and it is very interesting how the team tries to connect all the clues and then discover secrets of an ancient Chinese legend and all its dangers...
The author has done it again by coming out with this tremendous thriller. Don't start this book late at night like I did, and then you simply have to stay up to find the next clue! I am sure it will be another best seller, it is the type of book that grabs you from the very beginning!

Lorraine Bracco loves The Silent Girl, saying "Shedid it to me again! I can't get anything done when Tess puts out a newbook and this one caught me as I was starting work on Season 2 of"Rizzoli & Isles." So instead of memorizing my lines, I was suckedup into Boston's Chinatown with Jane, Maura, and company and could notput this one down. Just like the other books. Every time. And to top it off, now I have to wait for the NEXT one to come out--you're killing me, Tess! So good..."No one takes readers to the dark side and back with more razor-sharp jolts and sheer suspense than the storytelling master behind Ice Cold and The Keepsake. When New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen has a tale to tell, put yourself in her expert hands—and prepare for the shocks and thrills that are certain to follow.Every crime scene tells a story. Some keep you awake at night. Others haunt your dreams. The grisly display homicide cop Jane Rizzoli finds in Boston's Chinatown will do both.In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female's severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, her head nearly severed. Two strands of silver hair—not human—cling to her body. They are Rizzoli's only clues, but they're enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make the startling discovery: that this violent death had a chilling prequel.Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. But one woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she's the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil.Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning—and a swift, avenging blade.

The Second Opinion Review

The Second Opinion
Average Reviews:

Palmer has created some quirky, wonderfully likable characters who are sure you draw you into the story. Most of all, however, this is a mystery on overdrive. Fast, furious, and fun.
Dr Thea leaves the hospital in the Congo where she has been working upon hearing that her famous father has been nearly killed in a hit and run car accident.
Her father lies in a deep coma, seemingly beyond help. Thea's older bother and sister insist he should be allowed to die. The coma appears irreversible.
To complicate matters Thea's brother Dimitri has recreated the accident, by using a computer simulation, that landed her father in a coma. The simulation shows that the car that hit her father aimed at him deliberately. Who wanted to kill him?
Moreover, as she watches her father, Thea thinks she can see him respond to her questions. It's only a faint flutter of his eyelid. But when she calls in a nurse her father shows no movement. Why would he only want to contact her? Or could it be that she only wants him to respond?
Thea has Asperger's syndrome. It has made her a superb doctor, with a near encyclopedic memory of medical papers she has read, but it has left her with a dismaying inability to judge the emotions of other people. Who can she trust as she realizes there has been a deadly conspiracy, one involving many wealthy people?
Palmer does a fantastic job of juggling romance and mystery, and there are some twists and turns--and some thrilling scenes--that are bound to surprise the most experienced thriller reader. This is one you will really enjoy.

The Deadly Dinner Party: and Other Medical Detective Stories Review

The Deadly Dinner Party: and Other Medical Detective Stories

Dr. Edlow is tenaciously honest and accurate in his communication of medical concepts and the limitations of medical knowledge; and he does so in a language everyone can understand. So approachable are Dr. Edlow's stories, that they are able to immerse their readers in a world of disease and investigation as if they were directly involved. He accomplishes this feat by wrapping each story in fascinating historical detail and everyday environments and foods many will have experienced. You may never attend a dinner party, pet your cat, admire Queen Elizabeth's crown jewels, or read Harry Potter in the same way again.
As a physician and a lover of well-written literature, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to the lay person and medical professional alike.
