S.P. Fullinwider is like a modern day Socrates. Like Socrates, he looks closely at the way we define our world and what that says about who we are. In Technicians of the Finite: The Rise and Decline of the Schizophrenic in American Thought, he looks at how the American medical community interprets Fraud's concept of the unconscious mind. He also looks at American doctor/patient relationships. These relationships direct the importance of schizophrenia as an idea, and as a useful diagnosis. I heartily recommend this book. It is a cornerstone in the foundation of American History of Ideas.
