Complete Medicinal Herbal (Natural care) Review

I have browsed several books on herbal medicine and treatments. While all suggested herbs for various maladies - none told me how use the herb (root or flower?) or how to make the various ointments, or tinctures or what the common dosage should be. This book was the first I found that does! For anyone curious about the history of herbal medicine and what practical treatments can be used, this is the book to start with!

Naked to the Bone: Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Century (Sloan Technology Series) Review

Naked to the Bone: Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Century (Sloan Technology Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love reading science books geared toward non-scientists such as I. Bettyann Holtzmann Kelves Naked to the Bone: Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Century exactly fit the bill. Profusely illustrated and gracefully written, this fine work of non-fiction tells the story of x-rays, CT scan, MRI, sonograms, and PET scans. Kelves writes for the non-scientist, and does an excellent job of explaining how these various machines work, how they were perceived at the time, the economics of their development and marketing (Kelves never forgets that, for better or worse, medicine and inventing have always been businesses), and their changes in perception and use over time. Perhaps most interesting, and unexpected, are her two chapters addressing how medical imaging -- the ability to see "bones and all" -- was itself imaged in and influenced the visual, literary, and fine arts. Of particular interest to me, as a lawyer, is her accounts of how x-rays and other imaging devices were first used, and then later relied upon (or rejected) in courts of law. The depth and breadth of her research are truly impressive, as is her fine prose.

Play Therapy with Children in Crisis, Second Edition: Individual, Group, and Family Treatment Review

Play Therapy with Children in Crisis, Second Edition: Individual, Group, and Family Treatment
Average Reviews:

boyd does a nice job of providing solid overviews of major crises that impact the lives of children, such as abuse, illness, divorce. however, the book doesn't provide in-depth coverage of any individual topic. for those just starting out, the book gives a good general idea of assessment, treatment planning, and some specific techniques for use with this population. however, for those with more advanced skills, the book falls short of providing information that will enhance practice. an excellent grad school textbook, or for those who lack experience with this population. the book does provide good tools for use in assessment, and does cover the assessment process in depth. the chapter on childhood bereavement is particularly good.

Death on the Learning Curve: The Making of a Surgeon Review

Death on the Learning Curve: The Making of a Surgeon
Average Reviews:

This book is a very enjoyable read. It is a page-turner of medical suspense that's nearly impossible to put down. If you like TV medical dramas like ER or Grey's Anatomy, then you'll really like this book. It'll also shock you into awareness of what really goes on in teaching hospitals... the ethical dilemmas, life and death situations that require split second actions, the simple mistakes that lead to disaster, the positive outcomes that make the medical doctor's training worthwhile.
The book will make you more aware for when you or family members go into the hospital, all the while entertaining you as you read the book.

A hospital operating room may not be as safe as you think it is. Hiding among the sterile scrubs and gleaming instruments of an operating room is a whole lot of high drama: split-second life-and-death decisions.deep questions of ethics.roaring personality conflicts.the glory of saving a life-and the horror when a simple procedure goes terribly wrong.Renowned surgeon Pierce Scranton, Jr., kept a detailed diary of his internship year at a busy California teaching hospital. This book is a vivid, fictionalized memoir of that year in the trenches. Through the intertwined stories of teachers, students and patients, it explores issues like: What happens when teaching and healing come into conflict? When is a new treatment to prolong life a good idea, and when is it a disaster? How did lawyers and bean-counters get so much power? And when do relationships between doctors and other staff "go too far?" This honest account is startling and sometimes shocking-but always gripping.

I bought this book because I needed it for a class I am currently taking. This book in my opinion is very poorly written. There are chapters that I have read in sequence that seem to repeat themselves. If someone is looking for a book to read for their personal use, don't pick this book.

Statistics for Health Policy and Administration Using Microsoft Excel Review

Statistics for Health Policy and Administration Using Microsoft Excel
Average Reviews:

For people like me. Even if you have had no exposure to Excell before, by the end of the book, you will be able to complete difficult statistical analysis using the excell application. This include linear regression and matrix math. Dr. Veney uses real world health care examples to set up each task, and gives very good step by step instructions. In addition, the explainations given are written in basic english, and it often feels as if you are having a conversation with the author. Obviously statistics is still a difficult task for many, but this book does make it easier. I used it for class, and then found I actually pulled it out frequently during my work (in public health) to set up certain data and analyze them properly. My managers and bosses have always been surprised at my ability to compute- but really I am just using the set ups in this book.

The book is keyed to the powerful statistical tool Microsoft Excel and shows how to prepare data and understand the data display capabilities of the program. It also offers the information needed to master probability— the foundation of statistical analysis. This important book is structured around illustrative examples that are demonstrated with Excel displays. The book is filled with step-by-step discussions of how statistical problems are solved using Excel, and it contains a wealth of exercises addressing the material covered in each section. Many of the book's exercises include the replication of examples so that the student has an immediate reference with which to compare his or her work and determine whether or not the procedure was carried out correctly. Strangers at the Bedside: A History of How Law and Bioethics Transformed Medical Decision-Making Review

Strangers at the Bedside: A History of How Law and Bioethics Transformed Medical Decision-Making
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What do you do with a book that in spite of disagree with the vantage point of the author, you have to admit that the points he raises and the stand he takes has some validity? That an author can cause the reader to stop and think about firmly held belief systems, is indicative of a good writer in my opinion.
The author of this bioethical treatise is not a physician. He is a sociologist, and he is giving the historical background to the immense changes in how the American public views its medical establishment. In the process of becoming involved in ethics in the medical world, Rothman had to come in close contact with those he was writing about...physicians. I get the feeling that he was and to a point still in awe of the great men and the great minds he has been exposed to. Occasionally, the book seemed to be biased in favor of the physicians. A book such as this cannot be written without showing the author's own biases; author's can only admit that they harbor particular biases towards those they are writing about.
In many issues Rothman comes down solidly on behalf of the physicians, whether or not they brought about the changes in the public's attitudes towards those who work in medicine. Rothman bemoans the fact that the public has involved lawyers, bioethicists, and politicians in what used to be the private domain of physicians. Yet he writes and explains the history behind this lowering of pedestals for doctors and medical researchers...all the while trying to explain why physicians felt their patients should rely 'on those who know and understand' (read that to mean physicians think most patients and families are too stupid to understand basic concepts).
This book actually gives a good and vitally important background into the movements for individual rights and the exposure of unethical experimentation and medical treatment which led to the creation of new standards for medical care and research, as well as the installment of Internal Research Boards (IRBs) which are suppose to act as brakes on over-ambitious and unethical practices. Unfortunately, it is all too clear in recent media reports that even IRBs in universities and hospitals are not enough to protect the American public from research by those not interested in protecting the patients and alleviating pain, but rather shows more concern for keeping the grant money coming, fame, and doing science merely for the sake of doing science ('because we can!) John Hopkins obviously hasn't changed its attitudes over 30 some odd years towards the rights of the individual, since they are continuing to attract attention and controversy because of unethical research.
This book is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in bioethics. Even if the reader does not agree with the author, the book provides a different, and somewhat valid reflection of the medical establishment's views towards the infringement of their previously existing rights in determining patient care and the moral standards of research. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

Often referred to as the "bible" of dental hygiene, no student should be without this text. Practicing dental hygienists can also benefit from the newest up-to-date information in this book. The textbook is practical and loaded with valuable details required for practicing the art of dental hygiene. The chapters are clearly organized and easy to follow. Resources and references listed at the end of each chapter can lead the reader to more information on the various topics. It could easily be considered a mini-encylopedia for dental health information. This book is a bargain!!! I highly recommend this book to students and practicing dental hygienists.

Partners in Health: How Physicians and Hospitals can be Accountable Together (J-B Public Health/Health Services Text) Review

Partners in Health: How Physicians and Hospitals can be Accountable Together (J-B Public Health/Health Services Text)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A review of the need for collaboration between hospitals and doctors to improve quality and safety while increasing cost. Demonstrates how the reimbursement and legal environment create skewed and inappropriate incentives, but leaves out nursing and addresses outpatient medicine only superficially. As far as it goes, it is timely and practical. Its insights are useful for physicians in particular, especially physician managers. It does give an impression of some of the successful institutions, but the discussions are dry and technical but leave one wishing for more depth and detail. Storytelling would have strengthened the arguments.

Eat, Drink, and Be Happy: How Delicious Foods Can Help You Lose Weight, Balance Your Hormones, and Defeat Depression Review

Eat, Drink, and Be Happy: How Delicious Foods Can Help You Lose Weight, Balance Your Hormones, and Defeat Depression
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Due to my own personal struggles with health and sometimes, weight, I have read just about every book on food, diets, nutrition, and any combination thereof. Admittedly, I tried most of them as well. Without success. This is the first book that makes it all sound so easy to put together eating habits that would help me to choose foods that would be both pleasurable and beneficial. The format is easy to read and follow. Since this book does not exclude any particular food group or promote 'fads', it allows for personalization of favorite foods while still getting in the necessary nutrients needed to promote a more healthful state. It is appropriate for meat lovers as well as vegitarians. Sources of protein are well covered throughout the book. I made a list of my favorite foods from each chapter while I was reading it, then made a list containing each food item only once after I finished the book. My grocery bill has come down, my weight is coming down, my energy is up, and my stress over which foods to eat has vanished. To the Authors... Thank - you !

I consider the cases found at the end of every chapter as the most helpful and insightful and for anyone hooked on evidence-based treatment strategies, this book is a must. Bull's-Eye: Unraveling the Medical Mystery of Lyme Disease Review

Bull's-Eye: Unraveling the Medical Mystery of Lyme Disease
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In his book "Bull's Eye", Dr. Jonathan Edlow takes the reader through the medical detective work leading to the discovery of the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent responsible for Lyme disease. It also deals with several other tick-borne illnesses such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, and babesiosis. Unlike most readers, I have a unique perspective on this work as a former suffer of Lyme disease due to a tick bite I got while hiking in the St. Croix River valley of Minnesota in 1998. Fortunately, my physician, a gifted diagnostician, promptly tested for Lyme disease, and after a treatment of antibiotics (and anti-inflammatory drugs for the migratory arthritic pain involved), I became Lyme free after a careful prescription and testing regimen. It is with that background that I read "Bull's Eye", and I heartily endorse it as the best historical treatment of Lyme disease I have yet seen. I also have the benefit of being a biologist by education, so I was already acquainted with most of the terminology involved. This book is excellent for Doctors and other medical professionals, and is totally suitable to the layman as well, although someone with limited background may end up re-reading sections and flipping to the Appendix and Glossary occasionally.
The book is really a medical detective story, and a gripping one at that. It begins with the symptoms of an unknown disease clustered around Lyme, Connecticut in the mid 1970s. Initially believed to be Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA), authorities began questioning that diagnosis after demographic patterns were not consistent with JRA, and the disease exhibited significant clustering (which JRA does not do.) Initially brought to the attention of authorities by two area mothers, Polly Murray and Judith Mensch, their initial concerns were rebuffed. Through their perseverance, ultimately several teams of doctors began investigating the illness, believed to be linked to an insect vector due to the geographic distribution of the illness and the seasonality of the illness. Navy Doctors William Mast and William Burrows were quick to realize the curative effect of antibiotics on the disease, though not all doctors agreed. Notably Dr. Allan Steere of the Yale rheumatology department believed that antibiotics were not indicated until four years worth of data were analyzed. Although in 20/20 hindsight this is an obvious gaffe, I am sympathetic to the conundrum faced by Dr. Steere, as obviously he didn't want to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics. Where I am not sympathetic to Dr. Steere is in his seemingly arrogant, quick dismissal of the Navy doctors and their corporate and medical knowledge, particularly in light of their ninety percent cure rate with antibiotic therapy. I am somewhat academically amused that Steere and the Yale 'experts' were generally incorrect in most of their initial assumptions. Although I am personally grateful for the work of all the researchers involved, including Dr. Steere, I was exceptionally impressed with Mast and Burrows in addition to noted tick expert Dr. Willy Burgdorfer (after whom the Lyme disease spirochete is named) and his efforts to find the agent responsible for the disease. Working with ticks is extremely difficult: they are small, hard, and contaminated with a gazillion things. Isolating the one agent being searched for, in this case an unknown spirochete, is extraordinarily difficult.
Dr. Edlow is an excellent writer and anyone with interest in the medical field would love this book. The doctor who treated my Lyme disease recently left practice. When he left I went to see him specifically to thank him for all his efforts on my behalf and to give him a copy of "Bull's Eye." It was the least I could do.
