There is a time in everyone's life when a friend or loved one is touched by the cold grip of cancer. It is an indiscriminant disease that afflicts the very young, the very old and sometimes those in the prime of their lives. In Great Medical Discoveries-Chemotherapy, Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen artfully brings the reader through a history of chemotherapy from ancient times to the advances in modern technology. She introduces chemotherapy as a process of treating cancer with chemicals and brings us through its evolution from crude beginnings to modern medicine.
Throughout the book are factual tidbits, illustrations and photos that further the explanation of key points within the text.
My two cents:
Great Medical Discoveries-Chemotherapy is an educational text aimed at children in grades 7-12, but I believe that adults would also benefit from reading it. The text reads smoothly and is not littered with scientific jargon that would stump the average reader and require pre-reading of other scientific texts. The information and ideas presented are introduced through example and insight into the medical discoveries associated with chemotherapy. In each chapter, the author introduces a new aspect of chemotherapy through the history of its discovery.
I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others, interested in learning about chemotherapy. Great Medical Discoveries-Chemotherapy by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen reads smoothly and quickly, without the dryness you would normally find in science texts. Her style and flair for "telling a story" draws the reader in and guides him/ her down the road of discovery.
This book is an educational text that can stand on its own. I particularly enjoy reading on a subject that does not require pre-reading. The language and terms within the text are understandable for the average reader and the sections within the chapters flow together smoothly.
By introducing technology advances through history, the knowledge gained from the text is two-fold. The reader learns what discoveries were made and the sequence of events that led up to the discoveries. Having a scientific background, I was familiar with much of the factual information presented, but had very little pre-knowledge of the history behind the discoveries in chemotherapy. The history provided me with the "why" and "when" things happened. I have always found that it is easier to remember factual information if I know the "story" behind it. Bardhan-Quallen provides that "story," and the knowledge that is imparted is immeasurable. (...)
