A Medical Doctor Examines Life on Three Continents, A Pakistani View Review

A Medical Doctor Examines Life on Three Continents, A Pakistani View
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book "A Medical Doctor examines Life on Three Continents", describes the experiences of an unusual life of a person, who goes from a small town in North India where the remnants of Moghal culture were still the norm, to the cantonment town in Quetta, which is overlaid with spit and polish mode of British army life in the midst of a tribal society.
He dwells on the friendly relations between Hindus and Muslims in his native village, on how followers of both creeds participated in each other's festivities and respected both belief systems. Both communities venerate the local saint, and visit the tomb in equal numbers. He perhaps, idealizes a bit, otherwise the country would not have been partitioned.
The time he spent in the University of Karachi and Dow Medical College in the same city, most of which it would seem, was devoted to political activism, would make a student in Western countries wonder how they allowed it, or envious, depending upon individual disposition.
Dr Ehtisham comes across as a man of many parts and manifold experience. He was a political activist and nearly lost his career in the process.
After obtaining a medical degree and initial surgical training in Pakistan, he went to the UK, and pursued higher surgical training and specialist qualifications, but continued to observe social life, especially the health care aspect of it. He went on to Canada, the USA, and during the period, spent eight years in Pakistan, to build a hospital and resume `activism'-this time anti-nuclear and clan organization.
Back in the USA, he seems to have veered to Human rights work, Peace groups and writing.
The comparison of health and welfare systems of the UK, Canada and the USA, and how neo-liberals have nibbled away at the egalitarian state is very instructive. And so are his observations on religious and economic fundamentalism.
Though he led a many faceted life, one wonders what he could have achieved, if he had focused on writing, career or activism.

This is an introduction to the history of Pakistan set within the life story of a young man who became a doctor, moved to the US, and later went back to build a hospital for his countrymen. The discussion of politics, government policies, and popular movements is set within the drama of a young man going off to seek his fortune, start a family, and build a meaningful life in a fast-changing world. The book will also interest expatriates from the Indian sub-continent who have passed through and witnessed the events described, and their children and grandchildren who want to know more about their family history.Family and feelings infuse the book while illustrating anecdotally the impact of conservative government models versus those offering a social safety net. A medical doctor and political activist, the author traces his life from India at partition to postgraduate work and practice in the UK, Canada and America, comparing health standards, economic well-being, race relations, and the political atmosphere on three continents during the socially-conscious 1960s and later under bare-knuckle capitalism. He weaves in a brief synopsis of Pakistan s tumultuous history, including the role played by superpowers with an interest in the region. Part biography and part history and social commentary, this sweeping narrative sketches the political and economic realities of the past fifty years while tracing an eventful life spread across three continents, a life rich in personal relationships, politics, and practice as a medical doctor. The warm-hearted Dr. Ehtisham shares his story while outlining the passions and the political maneuvers that led to Pakistan s formation in 1947 and its ongoing struggle to forge a modern society while being hammered by repressive religious extremists on the one hand and abusive capitalist extremists on the other, riven by factions within as well as undermined by foreign influences seeking to control strategic terrain and a large population. He narrates his early days as a medical student who helped organize Pakistan s progressive student movement. In the early 1950s they demonstrated against government promotion of right-wing groups which were the ideological forerunners of the Al-Qaida and Taliban. In 1961 they launched a campaign against General Ayub and the first military dictatorship in Pakistan, and wound up in jail. Then, through his later experiences in the UK, Canada and the US, he compares the advanced social safety net state of the post-war UK with regimes that are determined to see people stand on their own two feet even when the system has already cut them off at the knees and shows the effect on the public when that state support was withdrawn. During his years in North America he saw the reductions in Disability and other benefits offered by the government to the poor and injured and he illustrates the impact on the population. In later years he returned to Karachi and, despite the corruption and chaos of the business environment, founded a hospital there before completing his career and retiring in New York State.Dr. Ehtisham shows how nations as well as individual lives are shaped by historical events, economic changes, religious fundamentalism, class systems and racial divides.

My Imaginary Illness: A Journey into Uncertainty and Prejudice in Medical Diagnosis (The Culture and Politics of Health Care Work/How Patients Think)
Average Reviews:

This book was very much needed for so many people. Dr. Atkins took an unfortunate event in her own life and was able to share all that she experienced and learned with others who are dealing with similar situations. To be ill and hear it's "all in your head" must be devastating. This book really opens your eyes to how doctors can easily brush you off; which only makes an already sick, weak, and frustrated patient even worse off. This book will defefinitely help many readers, both sick and healthy, and is a huge eye opener.

How Patients ThinkAt age twenty-one, Chloe Atkins began suffering from a mysterious illness, the symptoms of which rapidly worsened. Paralyzed for months at a time, she frequently required intubation and life support. She eventually became quadriplegic, dependent both on a wheelchair and on health professionals who refused to believe there was anything physically wrong with her. When test after test returned inconclusive results, Atkins's doctors pronounced her symptoms psychosomatic. Atkins was told not only that she was going to die but also that this was her own fault; they concluded she was so emotionally deranged that she was willing her own death. My Imaginary Illness is the compelling story of Atkins s decades-long battle with a disease deemed imaginary, her frustration with a succession of doctors and diagnoses, her immersion in the world of psychotherapy, and her excruciating physical and emotional journey back to wellness. As both a political theorist and patient, Atkins provides a narrative critique of contemporary medicine and its problematic handling of uncertainty and of symptoms that are not easily diagnosed or known. She convincingly illustrates that medicine's belief in evidence-based practice does not mean that individual doctors are capable of objectivity, nor that the presence of biomedical ethics invokes ethical practices in hospitals and clinics. A foreword by Bonnie Blair O Connor, who teaches medical students how to listen to patients, and a clinical commentary by Dr. Brian David Hodges, a professor of psychiatry, enrich the book's narrative with practical guidance for medical practitioners and patients alike.

Medical Mysteries is fascinating and informative not only for the target audience but for older readers as well. Adoiescent boys will enjoy the photographs of whole brains and brain segments dispersed throughout the book. The book is nicely organized with six main categories: Medical Science, Pathology, Genetics, Heredity, Classification, and Physiology.
I particularly enjoyed the chapter dealing with morgellons disease, a baffling condition about which relatively little is written.
Those with an interest with the odd and mysterious will enjoy this fast moving book, a book made even better with fabulous photographs and excellent graphics.

Human Anatomy: Text and Colour Atlas Review

Human Anatomy: Text and Colour Atlas

This book has extremely graphic, close-up and detailed photos of every part of the body. Excellent if you're writing a story about autopsies...or even if you're just curious. There are some clear illustrations, as well. The text is detailed, small, and extremely well organized to coordinate closely with the photos. This book is extremely well-designed, compact, and a great reference. Highly recommended.

An atlas of anatomy with substantial accompanying text. Basic anatomical concepts are explained in the opening chapter and, region by region, the subsequent chapters provide a guide to the topography of the entire human body, male and female. The authors attempt in their approach to the subject to bridge the gap between textbook anatomy and a clear understanding of how people are really put together. Photographs of the human cadaver illustrate human structure as it actually appears. The four-colour guides highlight and clarify the structures and relationships shown in each photograph, and place everything within a standard anatomical framework. The text describes the morphology in detail.

Doctor in the House: A Physician-Turned-Congressman Offers His Prescription for Scrapping Obamacare -- and Saving America's Medical System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The last two chapters ("Seven Things Your Doctor Wishes You Knew" and "A Prescription for What's Really Ailing Us") are the most important. This part of the book could stand alone, published as a mini-book or as a pamphlet, available for wide distribution.
Chapter 11 goes into detail about the nature of family practice today. It examines the world doctors inhabit under the weight of regulations, paperwork, lawsuits, and insurance companies. On pages 141 & 142, Dr. Burgess praises Governor Mitch Daniels from Indiana for his "Healthy Indiana" program, which empowers its state employees to be in charge of their own health care (via a "High Deductible Health Plan with a Health Savings Account.") This is what what David Goldhill promoted in his essay "How American Health Care Killed my Father" (published in the "Atlantic Magazine," September 2009 issue).
Chapter 12 gives us nine prescriptions for fixing our health care system. Michael Burgess writes succinctly, in only 18 pages, those nine remedies (pages 151-169). They include: insurance reform, tax fairness, portability, price transparency, etc.
On page 167, the "Prescription 8 -- Preventative Care and Wellness Programs" certainly makes sense. As in auto insurance where premiums are raised for motorists who like to speed and drive recklessly, health insurance companies should be allowed to raise premiums on individuals who live an unhealthy lifestyle (and reward those of us with lower premiums who exercise regularly and watch our weight). These kind of incentives should be available to everyone, including independent contractors. (Under Obamacare via "The Safeway Amendment," the wellness program is available only to **EMPLOYEES** of self-insured corporations; its regulations are so complex that a business attorney would be required -- lawyers are expensive!).
The author Michael Burgess is on our side -- us ordinary Americans, us health care consumers. His book is mainstream and "Middle America." He is no right-wing windbag like Rush Limbaugh (who recently attacked Mitch Daniels in one of his usual tirades.) Those of us in the "Tea Party Movement" are neither left nor right. Please write another book!

In 2010, the United States House of Representatives passed ObamaCare into law - an overt step away from liberty toward socialism. And while the powers at be claimed a sweeping victory bolstered by national pride, many saw what the legislation truly promised. In Doctor in the House, Congressman Michael Burgess applies his three decades of experienceworking inside our nation's health care system to the diagnosis of our true ailments. In doing so, he offers a clear, common sense prescription for making our system more excellent, more efficient, and less expensive--for all Americans.A third generation physician, Burgess writes with obvious passion for the healing arts and powerful convictions about the limits of government intervention in the doctor-patient relationship. Doctor in the House brings clarity and common sense to the perplexing national debate over the new health care bill.

... Dr. Spencer, who is no spring chicken, really knows his jazz. His book is part biography, part history, part sociology; it is also an excellent primer on pathology for non-medical people. His book is spiced with glimpses into the lifestyles of jazz greats. There's even a bit of ... humor here and there. Dr. Spencer has real affection for these haunted geniuses, and he shows us why early death was epidemic in their world.

This book set was a great buy. Instead of having to carry one huge book around, the book comes in two separate volumes, which is a definite plus. Also, this set comes with a study guide with questions relating to each individual chapter in the book. The questions are really good; however, there is no rationales for the correct answers listed.
Another thing about this set is the fact that the print is very small, something I am not too crazy about.
Overall, I am happy with the purchase and I saved about 60 dollars by purchasing this on amazon, instead of from my school's bookstore.

The Nan Jing is a fundamental book in the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
A lot of books of TSM were translated, but often the translation is not correct or definitively wrong or bizarre.
In this case we have a monumental work with a unique coincidence of positive situations.
The author of the revision is Paul Unshuld, a giant of the study of TCM.
Absolutely no doubt on the knowledge of the language and the understanding of the text.
The original text is present in the book and Paul added the main commentary at the text written by the most famous studious of TCM of all ages.
If you love TCM and you want to understand all subtle questions of this fine art, this is a book you must have.

It begins with the basic concepts & equations of fluid mechanics(Navier - Stokes, chapters 1-2)it goes on with Poiseuille flow (chapter 3), Pulsatile flowin a Rigid tube (chapter 4) and the most important chapters "Pulsatile flow in an elastic tube" (chapter 5) and "Wave reflections" (chapter 6) which has to do with waves in arterial trees. The book also presents the approach of the solution of blood flow in a rigid tube with an elliptic cross section. I didn't regreted the money I paid for it. It centerly worth it's price.

Phobia Free: A Medical Breakthrough Linking 90% of All Phobias and Panic Attacks to a Hidden Physical Problem Review

Phobia Free: A Medical Breakthrough Linking 90% of All Phobias and Panic Attacks to a Hidden Physical Problem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of people suffer -- and I do mean suffer -- from one or more phobias, and a lot of techniques are offered by various therapists to treat phobias. Unfortunately, while some of these treatments may reduce phobic symptoms somewhat, relatively few phobics are actually cured. In this excellent book, Dr. Harold Levinson explains the reasons for this situation. One is that there are three different types of phobias, a fact not generally recognized. About 5% or so of phobias are caused primarily by a neurotic condition of some sort. These phobias often respond to conventional psychotherapy whereas most phobias do not. Another 5% or so of phobias are caused by a severe trauma, such as being bitten by a dog or being in a plane that almost crashes. These phobias are often helped by desensitization therapy. But if phobias that are caused primarily by neurosis or trauma account for only about 10% of all phobias, what is the primary cause of the other 90%? Dr. Levinson's brilliant discovery is that the root cause of most phobias is a disorder of the cerebellar-vestibular sustem, called in lay terminology "the inner ear." Dr. Levinson also found that inner ear disorders are the primary cause of dyslexia and that there is a very high correlation between dyslexia and phobias. About 90% of people who are phobic or dyslexic are both phobic and dylexic. Fortunately, Dr. Levinson has found that about 80% of cases of both phobias and dyslexia respond to at least one of the inner ear medications currently available, including dramamine, scopolamine, and Benadryl. Inner ear disorders are relatively easy for trained audiologists to detect and verify by the battery of tests available to them, but they seldom are detected by routine examinations made by general practitioners or even ear, nose, and throat specialists. If you suffer from phobias and/or dyslexia -- as I do -- please read this book with an open mind. It may literally change your life for the better. In my case, thorough audiological testing -- as described in this book -- revealed that I do indeed have an inner ear disorder which was not detected by routine examinations. Based on this finding, my physician tried the inner ear medications listed by Dr. Levinson and found one that has given me significant relief. Therefore, I am recommending this book from personal experience.

Baby at Risk explores the growing phenomenon of "miracle" births and infants born with major medical problems that threaten or impair their health for life. The book examines the new assisted-reproduction technologies that are producing their share of miracle babies---but also a burgeoning population of imperiled newborns. Then there are the neonatal intensive care rescues that keep extremely premature and critically ill babies alive---some to live healthy lives, but others to face a bleak lifetime during which their families must care for them. Baby at Risk asks some very hard questions: whether some high-tech rescues serve the best interests of babies, their families, and the wider social good---or are they just satisfying the contemporary and ever-increasing Western passion for using expensive technologies? And, who are the key people who should be making decisions about imperiled newborns? Like the Terry Schiavo debate, these issues affect not only the patients, their families, and health workers, but also the government, media, and society at large. Through extensive interviews with parents and medical and nursing staff, and an exploration of ethical principles that guide deliberations about medical decisions, Baby at Risk examines the dilemmas that at-risk babies raise, considers the responses of those who care for and about babies, and proposes strategies for more effective and balanced decision-making in the uncertain world of imperiled newborns.
