For anyone interested in neuroscience, it is a must read. Basic Neuroscience gives a snapshot of where neuroscientists are currently doing research, including the edge of what is known and not known. Much of this knowledge has only been discovered in the last few years.

Medical Toxicology of Natural Substances: Foods, Fungi, Medicinal Herbs, Plants, and Venomous Animals Review

Medical Toxicology of Natural Substances: Foods, Fungi, Medicinal Herbs, Plants, and Venomous Animals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an essential reference text for medical libraries, poison and drug information centers, clinical toxicologists and anyone who manages patients who may be exposed to natural toxins. With the increasing use of alternative medicine, this book would be a useful addition to medical practice libraries and emergency departments. The author is Donald Barceloux, MD, the co-author of Medical Toxicology, which is still a staple reference in the discipline of clinical toxicology. Dr. Barceloux combines his expertise in medical toxicology and emergency medicine and his skills as an author to address the significant and challenging natural toxins that are associated with morbidity and mortality. The book is divided into five sections: foodborne and microbial toxins, fungal toxins (mushrooms), medicinal herbs and essential oils, toxic plants and venomous animals (even marine poisons). Each monograph follows a template that is consistent throughout the book and makes it easy to navigate from section to section. Strengths of the book include placing each toxin in perspective with regard to potential morbidity and mortality, focused but comprehensive monographs, and extensive referencing. After using the book for a few weeks, I noted only one minor weakness--a number of terms are missing from the index. For example, a minimal number of terms such as poinsettia, philodendron, Araceae are missing. Thus, it took slightly longer to locate the information about those plants. While all of the information included in the book can be found in a multitude of hardcopy references and online resources, this is the only book that combines everything into a single, authoritative, contemporary and easy to read reference.

Interest and information in the field of medical toxicology has grown rapidly, but there has never been a concise, authoritative reference focused on the subjects of natural substances, chemical and physical toxins, drugs of abuse, and pharmaceutical overdoses. Medical Toxicology of Natural Substances finally gives you an easily accessible resource for vital toxicological information on foods, plants, and animals in key areas in the natural environment.

Medical Firsts: From Hippocrates to the Human Genome Review

Medical Firsts: From Hippocrates to the Human Genome

As a lay person, I cautiously picked up Medical Firsts thinking I wouldn't understand a word. Surprise, surprise. I not only understood, but was blown away by what I didn't know. Adler made the lives and works of medical pioneers who laid the ground work for what we all take for granted come alive for me. Since I've actively repelled anything remotely connected to science all my life, almost every page had a "wow" factor.
The short chapters made it a lot more readable for me as a science challenged reader. With so much new info, I was grateful to pause after each one to appreciate the enormity of the discovery. I developed a reverence and gratituide to those who overcame enormous social barriers and fought, amazingly, the same hurdles that impede progress today - fear of change, fear of the unknown.
Thanks to Adler, I just might tiptoe back into new bookstore aisles.

The Complete Guide To Digestive Health: Plain Answers About IBS, Constipation, Diarrhea, Heartburn, Ulcers, and More Review

The Complete Guide To Digestive Health: Plain Answers About IBS, Constipation, Diarrhea, Heartburn, Ulcers, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read & referenced a number of books on digestive health. This book is excellent. It is one of the first that clearly & quickly gives you the information you need on food but also the medical exams to detect digestive health problems. Also, the book does a great job of giving you the advantages and disadvantages. For example, the authors talk about a food and then caution on potential problem. The authors talk about medicines like proton pump inhibitors, antacids, milk of magnesium and then give you the advantages and disadvantages. The authors talk about medical tests and how they are conducted, how to prepare, questions to ask your doctor, etc... The book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to prevent a digestive problem, or suspects that they have a digestive problem, or is living with a digestive problem or recovering from one.

The FDA and Worldwide Quality System Requirements Guidebook for Medical Devices, Second Edition Review

The FDA and Worldwide Quality System Requirements Guidebook for Medical Devices, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Steep price tag but worth it because - This is a good basic reference book for 21 CFR 820. It provides an outline of each requirement of the QSR with cross reference to and comparison with ISO 13485. It contains a matrix of 820 vs. 13485 with authors' notes that describe similarities/differences. It provides reference to the guidance ISO/TR 14969 which clarifies 13485. It also contains a section on process interactions, i.e., how CAPA interacts with Risk Analysis, etc. There is a chapter on Risk Analysis and information on Design Control. The comments to the QSR preamble are included and elaborated on which is helpful in determining the intent of law, useful for interpretation and application of the QSR . The authors offer useful guidance and some interpretation. All in all a good reference for new and/or practicing Quality Assurance staff, device managers, those seeking ISO medical device certification or improving their compliance in preparation for audits.

This new and expanded second edition maintains the organizational approach of the first and includes the requirements and guidance contained in the Quality System Regulation (QSReg), the ISO 13485:2003 standard, the ISO/TR 14969:2004 guidance document, and, as appropriate, a number of the FDA and Global Harmonization Task Force (GHTF) guidance documents. This second edition also addresses a number of additional topics, such as the incorporation of risk management into the medical device organization s QMS, QMS issues related to combination products, the key process interactions within a QMS, effective presentation of and advocacy for a QMS during FDA inspections and third-party assessments, and future FDA compliance and standards activities. The organization of the guidebook is based on the order of the requirements in the QSReg. For each substantive requirement section there is:A verbatim statement of the QSReg requirement. A description of the comparable requirement in ISO 13485:2003, focusing on any additions to or differences from the requirements contained in the QSReg. Excerpts of the FDA responses to relevant comment groups contained in the Preamble to the QSReg. Excerpts from various FDA guidance documents related to quality management systems. A description of the relevant guidance contained in ISO/TR 14969:2004, focusing on any additions to or differences from the guidance in the Preamble and other FDA guidance documents, and, if useful, excerpts from relevant GHTF guidances. Authors notes giving guidance derived from the authors sixty years of regulatory compliance experience. This guidance book is meant as a resource to manufacturers of medical devices, providing up-to-date information concerning required and recommended quality system practices. It should be used as a companion to the regulations/standards themselves and texts on the specific processes and activities contained within the QMS.
