Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM): A Practical Introduction and Survival Guide Review

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM): A Practical Introduction and Survival Guide
Average Reviews:

This book bridges gaps, period.
If you need to work with this standard, at very least skim this book. What it doesn't cover in detail, it provides an excellent overview of. It is a great "jumping off" point; so much so, that the language explanation alone is just shy of enough to write your own PACS software applications for the talented developer. Prior to reading this book, I did have previous experience working with DICOM, HL7 and PACS; however, after reading the book I realized how little I knew and truly understood and my shingle says "PACS Administrator".
This book is excellent for those responsible for the technical workflow of any medical imaging system or PACS. It provides a thorough history of the development of the standard and its application over time. While it aptly covers items of clinical concern like image quality, manipulation, and availability, it additionally provides a comprehensive breakdown of the "language" of DICOM. At first, many of those without backgrounds in binary/hexadecimal and software coding may find this language discussion overwhelming, but it is an invaluable read if you stick with it (just rely on your math and logic skills and don't fret the details). Finally, it addresses all current topics in the field (like teleradiology and image mobility), and provides some great real world examples and anecdotes.
For those that are more clinically oriented, there are probably more appropriately written materials, but I would still consider 1/2 of this book as required reading.

Grainger & Allison's Diagnostic Radiology: A Textbook of Medical Imaging (3-Volume Set) Review

Grainger and Allison's Diagnostic Radiology: A Textbook of Medical Imaging (3-Volume Set)
Average Reviews:

I found this book to be very valuable during residency. I believe that it would be impossible to read a major text for each of the radiology subspecialties ie- Resnick for MSK, Osborn for neuro, Som/Curtin for head and neck, and so on. Thus, this text provided a source that was readable from cover to cover during residency while providing more detail than a more basic (but still excellent) intro text like Brant and Helms.

This 3-volume textbook is a comprehensive, authoritative reference source aimed primarily at the trainee radiologist preparing for his/her professional board examinations and for the general radiologist looking for a general overview of modern radiological imaging.Organized along an organ and systems basis, the book covers all diagnostic and interventional imaging techniques and modalities in an integrated, correlative fashion. While the text is broad in scope, the individual chapters are written by leading international specialists who provide authoritative guidance on how to apply the newest methods and technologies to specific diagnostic problems.

Child Abuse Medical Diagnosis & Management Review

Child Abuse Medical Diagnosis and Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Among other things, this book has respectful pictures showing clearly both that physical abuse, and also sexual abuse including penetration by fingers and penises, is inflicted upon very small children, including those under three years old (see for example pages 764, 767, 768, 771, 772, 778,). Other pictures show that physical wounds can heal quickly, which I think implies that physical and sexual abuse can occur and be hidden in the household. Please read this book, EVERYONE, and not only professionals.

Basic Medical Techniques and Patient Care in Imaging Technology Review

Basic Medical Techniques and Patient Care in Imaging Technology
Average Reviews:

I used this handy reference in school, and it not only helped me to get excellent grades but it also is what I consider a needed reference for the American registry exam for radiologic technologists. This book covers quite thoroughly the section on Patient Care for the american registry exam. I was also recommended a few other books from someone who previously took the american registry exam and passed.
The other books are:
"The Ultimate Study Guide for the Registry Examination in Radiography:Key Review Questions and Answers" by Leonardi (Volume1) (Volume2) and (Volume 3). These books had all the questions and answers one needs to make sure they know before taking this test. I know because they helped me to pass.

This popular introduction to patient care has been completely revised and updated! An organized format and the text's easy-reading style allow students to better grasp concepts. Pre-post tests reinforce learned material; and laboratory reinforcements challenge the reader to perform newly learned skills. Case studies act as critical thinking exercises to tteach the reader how to think. Chapter glossaries provide definitions forcommonly used key terms. New features in the fifth edition: New material includes the most current material on tracheostomy, suctioning, gastrostomy tubes, parenteral nutrition, drug administration (with an emphasis on IV drugs), condom catheters, and special procedures. Chapter outlines provide an overview and introduce the reader to key concepts; a second color highlights text and illustrations; and learning objectives in the form of Expected Outcomes establish learning goals. A new chapter on pharmacology offers essential guidance for administering and understanding drugs related to the clinical setting. Unique to this edition is an appendix with key phrases in Spanish that teaches the reader to communicate with patients who do not speak English.

Teaching Atlas of Interventional Radiology: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Angiography Review

Teaching Atlas of Interventional Radiology: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Angiography
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Together with the book by Karim Valji (Vascular and interventional radiology, ISBN 0721670032) this book forms a formidable addition to any prospective interventionalist's library. The book essentially forms two parts. An introduction describing in a review format some common fields of interventional radiology such as lower extremity arterial disease, but also enlightens the user on the highly busy part of interventional radiology - that related to dialysis vascular access and its importance for the dialysist and (no lesse important) for the patient with a dialysis access. The second part of the book describes case stories with appropriate images and narrative content. A few areas seem a little different from modern approach with almost no vascular CT or even mention of multi-detector vascular CT, an important emergent technique. Also - albeit this may be from my lack of familiarity with American settings - a curious case of a patient with a brain abscess is related and the sequelae of that is never really mentioned. In general the book is informative, well written, clear and with a lot of interesting and highly educational examples.

Clinical Cardiac CT: Anatomy and Function Review

Clinical Cardiac CT: Anatomy and Function
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Good book for Cardiac CT for beginners and also as a reference textbook
for any department doing cardiac CT. Easily readable and good CT images throughout. Initial chapter on how to do cardiac CT gives a good review of indications/techniques/drugs and protocols to be used. Chapter on CT coronary anatomy and anomalies is good. Rest of the chapters on coronary arterial disease, stents etc. are thorough and readable. CD provided gives decent images but the CD can't be used as an interactive cardiac CT tutor for case studies.
Makes one understand the basics and the pathology concerned and makes one more confident to start off with Cardiac CT. Definitely worth the price.

This text book is the most up to date and comprehensive text book available for radiology residents preparing for the ABR exam as of this date 3/12/2002. I have recommended this text for my most serious students and they have done quite well on the ABR exam. ( Most have scored in the > 90th percentile in the U.S.) For residents who want to just pass the exam, I recommend Sprawls text.

A good book for teaching residents from. Covers a pretty wide range of topics. The level of detail covered is probably just enough for a radiology residents course, but medical physics students and grad students will probably find it a bit lacking. However, still an essential part of any medical physicist's library.
