With the wide selection of books on herbal uses confronting the average herbalist or curious reader, how is one to choose which resource is best? The answer is that it is impossible to use only one resource. Chevallier's books come close to being the one resource to use for employing herbs for medicinal purposes, but because the misuse of herbs can be deadly, I rely on a variety of material and crossreference my applications. In other words, if anyone says an herb has proved poisonous, I am careful. ....
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBAL MEDICINE (EHM) by Andrew Chevallier is an update of his book THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEDICINAL PLANTS (EMP). EHM covers most of the same plants as EMP, but contains more up-to-date information from various sources conducting research on the properties and uses of herbs, including herbal systems in other parts of the world such as the U.K. and Germany, (i.e. not exclusively reliant on the actions of the FDA or USDA for all it's information).
EHM, as did EMP before it, includes one of the largest selections of plants for medicinal uses. Not all the plants are botonacally speaking "herbs." Black Cherry, for example, is a tree, but like many other trees has constituent parts that may be used for medicinal purposes, and therefore viewed as an "herbal" remedy for certain conditions (chronic dry, irritable coughs!!)--or kill you if you ingest an excess. ....
EHM is not much concerned with the manufacture of floral sachets or assembly of ingredients for pot pourri, or how to lay out your herbal garden for that matter. In fact, my suspician is that the average EHM reader will probably consult the health food store for herbal items, and not grow herbs in the back yard or try to harvest them in the nearest park. ....

This book has consistently provided me with great information...an excellent starting point before contacting your doctor or for an illness you just want tot understand better. There are some common drugs that I couldn't find, but usually could cross reference them to find some mention in the book, if not in the drug info section. It seems to be stronger in the alternative medicine category than the prescriptions, but overall info on general illnesses and symptoms is incredibly comprehensive. This is the one book that should be on every family's shelf.
This book has provided much more insight into drug side effects and interactions (especially drug interactions with herbal remedies) than my doctor, my pharmacist or even the internet has provided. And its great when you need an answer quick, like when you are panicking over an injury or symptom at 3 in the morning! I am eagerly awaiting the 3rd edition.

GUIDE TO HOLISTIC HEALING A Review by Chet Day
Larry Trivieri's new book, "Guide to Holistic Health: Healing Therapies for Optimal Wellness," belongs in the library of every serious health student because it provides a thoughtful and comprehensive overview of the major therapies of holistic medicine.
Detailed chapters discuss nutritional medicine, environmental medicine, mind-body medicine, osteopathic medicine, chiropractic, botanical medicine, bodywork, naturopathic medicine, homeopathy, ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, yoga, and other therapies of holistic medicine.
When I finished "Guide to Holistic Health," I felt for the first time that I had a really solid understanding of all the major approaches to health in the holistic healing movement.
Having seen so many of my friends and family members harmed, maimed, or even killed by traditional medicine, I personally maintain a strong bias against the drug, cut, and burn approach. With that said, after finishing Trivieri's book, I felt better about doctors in general because it's obvious more and more physicians are rejecting the status quo approach for methods that are more in tune with the natural rhythms and needs of the human mind and body.
Overall, "Guide to Holistic Health" is well-written, informative, comprehensive, and full of helpful techniques that the serious health seeker can put right to use.
