Hot Flashes, Hormones, and Your Health (Harvard Medical School Guides) Review

Not a bad review on HRT options. Really quite technical and full of details that anyone but a health care provider will have difuculty fully grasping, but for those laypeople motivated to read it, it will still be quite usefull. As a health care provider myself, I wish the book was less wordy and had more bullet point summary charts with just the facts listed about various treatment options. Still, good information overall, and once I get motivated enough to type up my own summary sheets, I will likely use the info quite a bit in practice.

Doctor Chopra Says: Medical Facts and Myths Everyone Should Know Review

Doctor Chopra Says: Medical Facts and Myths Everyone Should Know

I've been a student of Jim Rohn's materials for many years, and he always taught that you should get more than one opinion on things. He suggested reading more than one book on health, and then figuring out the best for yourself to remain healthy. That's one of the reasons I read multiple books on health and fitness. "Doctor Chopra Says: Medical Facts & Myths Everyone Should Know" by Dr. Sanjiv Chopra & Dr. Alan Lotvin with David Fisher is a very informative book on a variety of health issues. It contains new research and provides authoritative advice from many top medical experts to assist with living healthier, happier and longer.
After the Preface and Introduction, which are both longer than many books, the contents are divided into five parts. These are: Food and Drink; Drugs, Vitamins, and Supplements; Medicine; Alternate Medicine; and Health Risks. There is also a short four page conclusion where the author's "aced" life is mentioned. They share a couple of their regular health habits. (I have to admit, I'm going to incorporate some of what they do into my regular routine, including keeping two regular aspirin readily accessible regardless of where I am.)The chapters in the various parts answer many common questions and provide plenty of advice that is practical and explained in easy language. As the authors say in the Preface, they eliminate the hype and promises, and simply report what the evidence is on various health issues. Their goal was to provide a resource to help people with all of the confusing claims, and I believe they achieved their goal and then some. The book provides science-based evidence, produced by reliable clinical trials to support or debunk the most common medical questions. Some of the topics discussed in part one include coffee, green tea, pizza, nuts, spices, and if there really is a best diet. The second part has chapters on vitamin D, aspirin, marijuana, statins, and more. Part three addresses topics such as HIV, Alzheimer's, breast feeding, cancer, and the common cold among others. The next section, part 4, has chapters that include yoga, acupuncture, and meditating along with a few others. And finally, part five includes chapters on various risks such as stroke, drinking from plastic bottles, cell phone usage, sleep, and baldness among others.
Each chapter concludes with a short summery titled "Dr. Chopra Says." These are nice little conclusions that offer advice on how to implement or use the information provided in the chapter. The actual chapters contain a lot of examples, studies, and research to support the findings that the authors present. I also appreciated that even though the authors are both prominent Western doctors, the book contains the section on alternative medicine and they don't dismiss all alternative methods, but look at them with open eyes and even suggest some of them, while telling readers to steer clear of others. I also like that the book offers advice on how to determine for yourself what's real and what's not real in medicine, so you can better evaluate headlines, stories, and articles you come across in your quest for better health.
This is a very practical and useful book for the person wanting to learn more about how to take control of their own health. You can read the entire book from cover to cover, or read the chapters that most interest you at the moment. Regardless, all of the information can help you live healthier and I recommend you add this to your health and fitness reading list.

The Facts of Life: Science and the Abortion Controversy Review

The Facts of Life: Science and the Abortion Controversy

Morowitz and Trefil (M&T I shall call them), two teachers at Geo Mason Univ started this short monograph as a friend of the court brief for one of the many abortion cases to reach the Supreme Court, so that the justices might have scientifically accurate and factual information to work with in some of their decisions. When Justice O'Connor made her famous statement to the effect that Roe v. Wade was a decision which was being overtaken by scientific advances in neonatology which were making survival of ever more immature infants possible, she did not have available reliable information of the sort M&T have put forth in this small gem of a book. I have been involved in providing abortion in my Ob/Gyn practice for a very long time and have made a serious and ongoing effort to educate both the public and my medical colleagues about the abortion controversy since 1984. One of the most difficult things for the average layperson, and even for physicians, to get a handle on has been exactly why 24 weeks gestational age of the fetus should make such a difference in the abortion debate. M&T have done everyone except for the militant anti-abortion fundamentalists a tremendous service by bringing together most of the scientific knowledge which bears on fetal development as it pertains to the higher functons of the central nervous system and newborn survival. As they state in the introduction to The Facts of Life, while the two sides in the abortion controversy will never admit to the validity of the conclusions drawn by the other side, we should at least have accurate information upon which to draw those conclusions. Morowitz and Trefil had done us a true service by providing much valuable information. wfh

In The Facts of Life, Harold Morowitz and James Trefil, two distinguished scientists and science writers, examine what modern biology can contribute to our understanding of the abortion debate. Sensitive to the myriad ethical and religious arguments beyond the realm of science that swirl around abortion, the authors focus on one crucial question--when does a fetus acquire "humanness," that quality that sets us apart from all other living things. While humans are linked via cell structure and cell chemistry with all life on our planet--from monkeys to fruit flys to pumpkins--it is the human brain structure which makes us who we are. Reviewing the latest advances in molecular biology, evolutionary biology, embryology, neurophysiology, and neonatology--fields that all bear on this question--the authors reveal a surprising consensus of scientific opinion; that humanness begins around the twenty-forth week of gestation when connections needed for brain function are finally made. A fascinating inquiry, moving across various scientific disciplines, The Facts of Life makes a valuable contribution to the continuing abortion controversy, and offers a fascinating glimpse of what makes us uniquely human.

Rethinking Abortion Review

Rethinking Abortion

Mark Graber writes an excellent, in-depth analysis on the issue of abortion. To start with, I have to mention over 30 pages of well-researched bibliography with which Mr. Graber supports his argument. What I like about this book is its pragmatism and a realistic analysis of the issue: enough of the philosophical/constitutionality debates, let us see how abortion law on the books differs from abortion law in practice then let us arrive at a solution. Mr. Graber analyses pro-life and pro-choice positions showing their strengths and weaknesses, and then goes for the kill with his equal choice position.

Mark Graber looks at the history of abortion law in action to argue that the only defensible, constitutional approach to the issue is to afford all women equal choice--abortion should remain legal or bans should be strictly enforced. Steering away from metaphysical critiques of privacy, Graber compares the philosophical, constitutional, and democratic merits of the two systems of abortion regulation witnessed in the twentieth century: pre-Roe v. Wade statutory prohibitions on abortion and Roe's ban on significant state interference with the market for safe abortion services. He demonstrates that before Roe, pro-life measures were selectively and erratically administered, thereby subverting our constitutional commitment to equal justice. Claiming that these measures would be similarly administered if reinstated, the author seeks to increase support for keeping abortion legal, even among those who have reservations about its morality.

Abortion should remain legal, Graber argues, because statutory bans on abortion have a history of being enforced in ways that intentionally discriminate against poor persons and persons of color. In the years before Roe, the same law enforcement officials who routinely ignored and sometimes assisted those physicians seeking to terminate pregnancies for their private patients too often prevented competent abortionists from offering the same services to the general public. This double standard violated the fundamental human and constitutional right of equal justice under law, a right that remains a major concern of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
