(More customer reviews)The first 30 pages alone would have been enough to rank 10 stars! Just by reading this book I became optimistic about my practice and it began to fill. Each chapter gave me ideas I never thought of before. It helped me work smarter - with less effort, much more pleasure. By the time I finished this book I was trying to decide whether to raise my rates or start a waiting list, and I was seeing IDEAL clients, taking no HMO's, charging more than other psychiatrists in my area, and looking forward to going to work each day. This book blends business with integrity and taught me to value myself, my practice and my clients. I recommend it to ANYONE in the health care field. It made it so easy, and helped me to confront business aspects I hadn't been paying attention to. And she gives so may real life examples, it feels do-able. This book is worth a years' worth of high quality business consulting. I recommend it to any of my clients who have private practices from yoga instruction to massage therapists, and to all my friends in the psychotherapy field. I have never made so much money or felt so good about my practice in my life. She even makes talking to clients about money something I can now do in a way that feels both appropriate and respectful - to me and to them. What I have learned has already netted me literally thousands of dollars. I have never written a book review before, but I have to express my gratitude in some way, and this is my attempt to let others know that with the suggestions, tips and encouragement from this book, it is not only possible to make a living doing therapy, but to build an IDEAL practice without having to contract with any insurance companies. What a God-send of a book.

(More customer reviews)Medical Billing is one of those niche targeted books that demonstrates the benefit of place like Amazon.com. This is the kind of book that you would NEVER find if not for the Internet. This book is a veritable cornucopia of information and advice on how a medical practice needs to structure itself to ensure viable billing practices. This is valuable to not only the physician but also to the patient.
The author suggests that although the managed care billing system may appear to be broken, with the right disciplines we can FIX IT ourselves in many cases. In my work with medical practices and hospitals I can't tell you how often I come across physicians that have no choice but to reduce certain patient services because they just don't have the income to invest it where they would like. In the same way I have seen improper billing procedures frustrate patients so much that they literally REDUCE the number of doctor visits just to avoid the hassle of dealing with insurance and billing companies.
What I particularly liked about Yuval's book is that it can be easily understood by medical professionals, billing and insurance company representatives but also by the common person. He starts with a clear, thorough explanation of the history of the medical billing system, the advent of managed care and then gets into the nuts and bolts of billing explaining in a very down-to-earth manner, Super bills, allowable, write-offs, charge-backs, how the clearing houses work and so on. The book is loaded with graphs, captions, bullet points and images that just aid in the understanding of what can often a rather confusing topic.
Throughout the book, the author makes reference to how the system needs to change and what new variables may be on the horizon. I found this to be helpful in guiding my medical clients toward some policies and procedures that we may want to put in place regarding the new ICD codes and CPT10 system, the new FTC Red Tag privacy issues, and new HIPA regulations. The book makes a great reference tool for planning as well.
As a consultant that spends time consulting with hospital administrators, practice managers and physicians I have to say this is probably THE MOST comprehensive, easy to understand manual on medical billing that I have ever seen. I have actually purchased several copies to give to some of my clients and I suggest other medical consultants do the same.
I STRONGLY recommend this book to all medical professionals, practice managers and medical consultants. That said, if you are a patient and really want to understand the medical billing process I will say this is the ONLY book for you.

The book is organized into three sections: Qualitative Aspects of Medical Practice, Quantitative Aspects of Medical Practice, and Contemporary Aspects of Medical Practice. Appendices include sample management service agreements, and information on medical unions and public perception of physician salaries. A particularly useful feature is a brief biosketch of each contributor, complete with contact information.
I read with particular interest the chapters entitled "Medical Office Business Plan", "Insurance Coding Guidelines", "The Case for Concierge Medicine", and "Dissecting a Medical Malpractice Trial". Like the rest of the book, these were readable, concise yet complete, and well developed.
I could have used a book like this in the past, I will certainly refer to it frequently now.

Stedman's Medical Dictionary Review

I have less physically attractive medical dictionaries with no color and a boring cover that seem to have the definitions I am looking for when Stedman's doesn't. Adequate dictionary but perhaps Taber's in a better value.

The rest of the book presents a summary of everything from telephone etiquette to the duties of the office manager. This is really more of a sloppily written introduction to running the front end of a medical practice than it is a serious introduction to medical billing and coding. As such the book is really only of value to someone thinking of pursuing a job in medical practice management and just wants to get an idea of what it's all about. It's of little value for anyone actually trying to figure out how medical billing and coding actually works.
