At Whittington Hospital, an affiliate of the California University system, Dr. Arnold Jones is stunned when his wealthy patient dies during surgery for no apparent reason. The coroner makes a ruling on probable cause and all the medical boards clear Dr. Jones of negligence. However, the spouse of the deceased sues Dr. Jones for malpractice.
After mentally reviewing his actions in the operating room and believing he did nothing wrong and suspecting foul play, Dr. Jones refuses to allow his insurance company to settle. Instead he turns to malpractice attorney Vicki Shea, a former doctor, to represent him in the upcoming case. However, the case takes a bizarre turn when someone tries to kill Vicki and succeeds in murdering two of her expert witnesses. Now battling for both her life and the principle that Dr. Jones is pushing, Vicki continues her efforts to prove her client innocent of any wrongdoing.
MORTAL JUDGMENTS is an enthralling legal-medical
thriller that will elate fans of the sub-genre due to its strong cast. Vicki is a great protagonist, who brings plenty of human flaws and strong convictions to the novel. Dr. Jones believable willingness to fight for what he believes is right adds much depth to the story line. John Peak has clearly climbed to new peaks with this compelling tale that will demand more appearances of vivacious Vickie.
