Eating disorders present diagnostic and treatment challenges to clinicians. While such disorders need both medical and psychological treatment, patients may be too medically ill for a thorough psychiatric evaluation and may be misunderstood by many primary care physicians. In this revised and updated edition ofEating Disorders, Philip S. Mehler and Arnold E. Andersen provide a user-friendly and comprehensive guide for primary care physicians, mental health professionals, and others who encounter individuals with the problem. Mehler and Andersen identify common medical complications that people who have eating disorders face and answer questions about how to treat them. They also cover such serious complications as osteoporosis, cardiac arrhythmia, electrolyte abnormalities, immune compromise, and gastrointestinal sequelae. Incorporating case studies, medical background on the complications, suggestions for diagnosis and treatment, and a list of selected references, chapters cover important topics including team treatment and nutritional rehabilitation. The authors also address special areas of concern, such as athletes who have eating disorders and the pharmacologic treatment of obesity. Mehler and Andersen encourage close medical follow-up for patients who have eating disorders. This book will help primary care and mental health professionals to understand and to more effectively address the complex concerns of patients with eating disorders. Praise for the first edition"An excellent guide to the medical issues connected with eating disorders."- Psychiatric Services"This book provides useful and practical information to practitioners who are new to the care of patients with eating disorders while serving as a reference for those with more experience." -Annals of Internal Medicine (2010)

When Psychological Problems Mask Medical Disorders: A Guide for Psychotherapists Review

When Psychological Problems Mask Medical Disorders: A Guide for Psychotherapists

This is a great resource for clinicians. Differentiating between medical and psychological disorders is critical in the practice of health care, as they obviously require quite different modes of treatment. Dr. Morrison has formatted his book in a very easy-to-follow style, where each chapter describes a particular medical problem as well as a discussion of the psychological effects that this given medical disorder can produce. This book is a must-have for those practitioners not specifically trained in medicine in order to avoid making the mistake of overlooking a medical condition in diagnosis.
I recommend this book to every health care provider.

One of the most important books you will need for education in genetic counselling and interpretation of cytogenetic results. Its a pleasure to read and additionally, delivers insight into psychological problems rising from integration of cytogenetically "abnormal" individuals in the human society.

Chromosomal abnormalities can cause disability in children, and reproductive difficulty in parents. Many parents and couples seek genetic counseling in order to learn why they, or a relative, may have had a child with a particular collection of medical problems and/or intellectual disability. There may have been a history of multiple miscarriage, or infertility. They may want to know the outlook for a pregnancy, and what the risks might be.These and other questions concerning chromosome abnormalities are addressed in this standard text, which will be of interest to genetic counselors, medical geneticists, pediatricians and obstetricians, infertility specialists, and laboratory cytogeneticists. This third edition has been thorougly updated, and is richly illustrated and fully referenced. New chapters have been written on preimplantation diagnosis and on reproductive risks due to environmental agents. The practical applications of recent advances in molecular cytogentics are noted. The book will give counselors the information that will enable them to help concerned parents accommodate to their particular "chromosomal situation", and to determine what may be, for them, the best course of action.

The Christian Counselor's Medical Desk Reference Review

The Christian Counselor's Medical Desk Reference
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pastors are not (usually) physicians. That being said, it is helpful to have a general idea of the symptoms and progression of common conditions (especially those considered psychiatric).
Dr. Bob, a physician and nouthetic counselor for over 30 years, is still teaching excellent courses on counseling, especially dealing with medical issues and uncommon situations.
The biggest help in this book is the suggestions he gives for counseling someone who is facing these problems. This is not a diagnostic tool (as a diagnosis should only be done by trained medical personnel, not pastors/counselors), but a tool to help the counselee deal with the situation and increase the understanding of the condition for the counselor.
