I have used this book a lot in my work. It presents ways of incorporating the arts - visual, narrative, drama, film, music - into medical education specifically and so of course in health professional education generally. Each chapter is a framework of ideas on how to utilise the arts in everyday teaching. The frameworks are easy to follow - it's then up to the educator to be aware of how to creatively integrate them into their lesson plans. This book emphasizes that the arts and medicine are not polarised, that they work together and that the outcome is a richer learning experience for students. Using different learning and teaching strategies sometimes requires a leap out of your comfort zone: you'll find yourself well rewarded for trying suggestions from this book.

What is primary care? It is not about diseases but about people. People are not machines, but are thinking emotional beings. They are complex beings however and for the individual to unravel his or her own emotions for themselves is sometimes difficult, for health professionals trying to understand them, skill is frequently required to even work through their complexity to get to the real person and their problems. The Arts in Medical Education is a practical manual for using the arts as a resource in medical education. It contains principles and methods to enliven and improve the learning experience. Illustrations and photographs, along with a CD of the music referred to in the text, assist the reader in developing a thorough knowledge of the subject. Topics are broken down to reveal attributes, applications and relevance providing a well rounded approach to teaching. This book will be invaluable to healthcare educators and medical professionals with teaching responsibilities.
