For medical spell checking, this is pretty much the only product and I have used it for last 18 years. At Amazon, you can SOMETIMES get it about ten bucks less than Stedman's web site and Prime members do not have to pay the shipping. On the other hand, at Stedman's web site you can download it too.
Installation on Mac & Windows is a breeze. I have used it with Mac Office 2004 and Microsoft Office 2007 without any problem. The premium edition allows 3 updates in a year and is about seventy bucks more expensive; in my field not enough new drugs come out in a year to make it worth it. But Premium edition may be useful for transcriptionists dealing with multiple specialities. For two more years you can get the newer version of Standard edition at the the upgrade price of forty bucks. In my experience, most cost effective way to use this is product is to upgrade every two years - so after the first ninety or hundred bucks it comes out twenty bucks every year. In my field an average of ten new drugs come out in a year but if you use it for family practice or internal medicine or even cardiovascular medicine you may need a yearly upgrade.
My complaints about this Stedman's Spellchecker 2010 are that it is not compatible with Mac Office 2008, iWork and Google Docs, which more and more people are using now. It works with Corel Wordperfect but how many people use that? Now that doctors are beginning to use iPad for medical records, I think they need to make it compatible with mobile word processors like iWork, QuickOffice, Documents to Go etc.
