When My World Was Very Small: A Memoir of Family, Food, Cancer and My Couch Review

This book was outstanding. While much of the book focuses on the author's ultimately successful battle with breast cancer, it is far from being just a "cancer memoir". It is a beautifully written, vivid and inspiring memoir of a woman with a very full life, the devastating effects that breast cancer and its treatment had on her, and the many ways in which a whole community of dedicated friends and family helped her to cope and ultimately emerge with renewed strength.

Life with Sudden Death: A Tale of Moral Hazard and Medical Misadventure Review

Life with Sudden Death: A Tale of Moral Hazard and Medical Misadventure

With the language, imagery and humor of the novelist he is, Michael Downing creates a powerful and beautiful memoir about the boy he was and the patient he became upon the discovery of a genetic mutation. I laughed and I cried, often at the same time. For example, he writes, "I didn't black out the Kennedy tragedy. I do remember being shown a newspaper picture of the president's kids and feeling something like a paper cut in my guts when I noticed the little boy. I'd seen some old black-and-white photographs of my mother and the nine Downing kids lined up at a public event to honor my father and I knew exactly what it felt like to be the only one forced to wear short pants in public."
Downing sheds light where many would rather look away. With candor and compassion, he recalls the injustices and injuries of childhood and he exposes the harm done to him in the name of medicine. Whether you prefer John Updike or David Sedaris, Frank McCourt or Alice McDermott, you'll enjoy every page of this remarkable book, every book by this extraordinarily talented writer.

The youngest of nine children, Michael Downing was three when his father died - suddenly and inexplicably. No autopsy was performed. The family diagnosis was God's will. As a boy, Downing rigorously trained as a spiritual athlete, preparing to vault into heaven. But eventually he escaped the religious dogma, and the family arena - until one of his brothers died in 2003, suddenly and inexplicably. No autopsy was performed.Alarmed, Downing pursued a diagnosis: Drawn into a world of researchers, clinicians, and manufacturers with their own arcane ethics and faith, Downing discovered he had inherited a mutant protein from his father, and the first symptom would be his sudden death. To save his life, a defibrillator was hard-wired to his heart. Within weeks, he needed emergency surgery to remove the device and the life-threatening infection he got with it. Two months later, he was re-implanted - only to read in his morning newspaper that the new wires anchored to his heart were prone to failure. His device might be powerless, or it might deliver a series of unwarranted, possibly fatal, shocks. From a bedeviled boyhood in the Berkshires to a grim comedy of errors in one of Boston's best hospitals, Life with Sudden Death is a wild ride.

Dwarfism: Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Profound Short Stature Review

Dwarfism: Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Profound Short Stature

As the mother of a 4'6" woman with Mucolipidosis III, I could relate to many of the stories I read in this book. Beyond that, I learned a great deal about all of the different causes for dwarfism. Dr. Adelson has presented a comprehensive view of the many challenges faced by dwarfs. She writes with the compassion of one who has the understanding of the complexities of finding the right treatment for each individual.
This is a must read for anyone who is raising a child with short stature. It contains a wealth of valuable information about numerous disorders, and a list of different helpful organizations. The many personal accounts help to make the information very meaningful. This book is a "keeper" to be used for reference in the future.

The Shape of the Eye: Down Syndrome, Family, and the Stories We Inherit (MEDICAL HUMANITIES SERIES) Review

The Shape of the Eye: Down Syndrome, Family, and the Stories We Inherit (MEDICAL HUMANITIES SERIES)

The Shape of the Eye is an extraordinary book. It's both a wise, compelling personal memoir about Estreich's experiences raising his daughter Laura, who was born with Down syndrome, and an intelligent, nuanced analysis of how we think about people who are categorized as different. This book is so smart about the dilemmas of understanding a medical condition and a unique person at the same time. And it's a funny, compulsive read.

My husband and I are both physicians; I work part time to take care of our 1 year old. He is still building his practice; so you can imagine our lives are a bit hectic. The book gave us a better perspective on what each other is going through in terms of stressors. Highly recommended reading for all professionals in a committed relationship whether or not you have any issues with the relationship.
