Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course Review

This excellent textbook is a real treasure chest for any student without prior knowledge but interest in medical image processing. Starting with a recap of the basic aspects of medical image acquisition, it smoothly introduces into the field of medical image processing in a very plain way. The chapter on "Filtering and Transformations" deserves special attention as it contains one of the most straight forward explanations of the Fourier transform I stumbled upon so far. In this and all the other chapters, the authors cover the underlying theory only to the amount which is absolutely necessary to understand the "Why?", and put much emphasize on the "How?". Here, Matlab(R)'s freely available GPL counterpart Octave provide the vehicle for immediately getting started with one's own hands-on experience. The authors explain each algorithm's individual steps in detail. Some may complain that the source code which comes with the book does not make use of the beauty of Matlab's matrix calculation capabilities. Having said that, the way the examples are coded allows for a pain-free transcription into any other language, and is easily understandable to anyone with just a basic idea on programming.
This book covers a wide range of aspects of medical image computing; however, it does not elaborate on details of the more sophisticated methodologies, but contains some suggestions for further reading. Finally, an outlook onto recent trends in medical image computing (fMRI, DTI, etc.) would have been a befitting conclusion of this remarkable book.

Based on the authors' decades-long tenure in clinical environments and their extensive teaching experience, Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course introduces the basic methods in applied image processing without assuming that readers have extensive prior knowledge beyond basic applied mathematics, physics, and programming. Illustrated with simple, well-commented MATLAB examples, the book's tangible and accessible presentation demonstrates real-life applications. The rapid evolution of radiological imaging in the past four decades has brought medical image processing into the forefront as an essential tool for clinical research, a crucial component of modern diagnostics, and an indispensable element the actual treatment of diseases. A hands-on introduction to the basic image processing algorithms used in clinical routine applications, Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course closes the gap between basic engineering knowledge such as simple programming and applied mathematics on the one hand, and the general understanding of a science that affects the health of a broad public.

Digital Image Processing for Medical Applications Review

Digital Image Processing for Medical Applications

The most accessible book on imaging on the market. Written in a clear and direct style, with lots of figures and example questions. Comes with exercises that you can use with ImageJ. It doesn't overwhelm you with math, but uses it sparingly and always explains the background. This is a great book either for self-study or as a classroom textbook. It should also be of interest to those already working in medical imaging. Just the clearest, most user-friendly imaging book out there ...

Image processing is a hands-on discipline, and the best way to learn is by doing. This text takes its motivation from medical applications and uses real medical images and situations to illustrate and clarify concepts and to build intuition, insight and understanding. Designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students who will become end-users of digital image processing, it covers the basics of the major clinical imaging modalities, explaining how the images are produced and acquired. It then presents the standard image processing operations, focusing on practical issues and problem solving. Crucially, the book explains when and why particular operations are done, and practical computer-based activities show how these operations affect real images. All images, links to the public-domain software ImageJ and custom plug-ins, and selected solutions are available from www.cambridge.org/books/dougherty.

Medical Imaging Signals and Systems Review

Medical Imaging Signals and Systems
Average Reviews:

A very pedagogic book that covers the principles of medical imaging from a linear systems point of view. It is divided in 5 parts, being the first one devoted to the basics of imaging systems and the rest deal with modalities well established in the medical community. So only the chapters of the first part are essential to read before going to any other sections, which are mostly self-contained.
One section I would add to make it more complete would be some chapters on optical imaging, of which some techniques are finding a niche in clinical applications.
I found there is room for improvement in the book layout; the outer margins are simply too wide and some long equations go too close to the spine. The clarity of diagrams and photographs is good, but I would have appreciated some color inserts in a book of this price.

For courses in medical imaging systems. With signal processing as its foundation, this text covers the most important imaging modalities in radiology: projection radiography, x-ray computed tomography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging. Organized into parts to emphasize key overall conceptual divisions, Medical Imaging is most appropriate for engineering students who have taken the prerequisite signals and systems courses as well as elementary probability.
