Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach Review

Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach
Average Reviews:

I almost never read textbooks for class. I always rely on the class syllabus and lecture notes and I've done well. But I not only read this book for my therapeutics class, I'm going to take time out of my summer to read the other sections because it is so helpful and well-written. The explanations are detailed enough that you understand the background mechanism, but not so detailed and dense that you just want to skim through it. Great resource!

Victorian Grotesque: An illustrated excursion into medical curiosities, freaks, and abnormalities, principally of the Victorian age Review

Victorian Grotesque: An illustrated excursion into medical curiosities, freaks, and abnormalities, principally of the Victorian age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a compilation of medical abnormalities in the Victorian era. It illustrates conditions from the minor - an extra digit, to the extreme - parasitic conjoined twins (an example of which was born in South America recently; the separation was successful but the baby died due to complications).
Oddly, Joseph (John) Merrick - the Elephant Man, who died in 1890, is not mentioned in the book. However, the Tocci conjoined twins, born in Italy in 1877, are.
It is interesting to note that these conditions still exist today, although most are detected before birth and terminated.
This is a fascinating book, heavily illustrated with photographs and contemporary line drawings, lovingly researched by the author. I have had my copy for over 25 years and have read it over a dozen times.
If you have an interest in the medical side of these abnormalities or if you have the morbid interest of the Victorian public to these poor and, sadly, often exploited human beings or if, hopefully, your interest is one of compassion and understanding, then I urge you to read this extraordinary book.

Oxford Textbook of Sports Medicine (Oxford Medical Publications)

This edition goes with excellent design, making of "Oxford Textbook of Sports Medicine" an intellectual and didactic attractive. Moreover, in this second edition the sections are reviewed, having important topics for physicians and all people interesting in sports medicine. The chapters are completes and concise in the same time, a great point for the editors, authors and principally for readers. In the beginning, the book presents a brief review of exercise physiology, following with general topics in sports as nutrition and growing. After, some chapters show for the reader some of the most common injuries in sports, having special considerations the injuries in ankle and knee. The last chapters describe about special populations in sports, as women in pregnancy and elders. I really recommend this book.

Teaching Atlas of Interventional Radiology: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Angiography Review

Teaching Atlas of Interventional Radiology: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Angiography
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Together with the book by Karim Valji (Vascular and interventional radiology, ISBN 0721670032) this book forms a formidable addition to any prospective interventionalist's library. The book essentially forms two parts. An introduction describing in a review format some common fields of interventional radiology such as lower extremity arterial disease, but also enlightens the user on the highly busy part of interventional radiology - that related to dialysis vascular access and its importance for the dialysist and (no lesse important) for the patient with a dialysis access. The second part of the book describes case stories with appropriate images and narrative content. A few areas seem a little different from modern approach with almost no vascular CT or even mention of multi-detector vascular CT, an important emergent technique. Also - albeit this may be from my lack of familiarity with American settings - a curious case of a patient with a brain abscess is related and the sequelae of that is never really mentioned. In general the book is informative, well written, clear and with a lot of interesting and highly educational examples.

This 3rd edition, again never failes to deliver.
Has become a truly established classic Text reference of PM&R, now with stunning aesthetic improvements in line with the High tech age. Lots of Color Pictures etc. With the e-edition now, makes this reference even more readily available to people on the move with a computer, essentially does away a 'baby' edition of such a text (like the 2nd edition).
Strongly recommended to anyone interested looking up topics in PM&R.

Masterpieces of Medical Photography: Selections from the Burns Archive Review

Masterpieces of Medical Photography: Selections from the Burns Archive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This fine, limited-edition hard-bound book with dust jacket was published in 1987 by the Twelvetrees Press. It contains forty four-color plates on uncoated paper with accompanying text. The photograph on each plate consists of a medical subject from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. They are taken from the Burns Archive, which houses over 700, 000 vintage prints, including the world's largest collection of early medical photographs. This collection is especially noted for iconic historic images- medical photography and images of the dark side of life, including death, disease, and war.
"Masterpieces of Medical Photography" is edited and introduced by Joel-Peter Witkin. The captions and afterword are by Stanley B. Burns, M.D.
The book, itself is unpaginated, and sized at 12 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. The first edition was limited to 3000 hardbound copies. Each photograph is on a separate page with a short description on the back of the page.
Examples of photographs from this book:
"Dissected Head in Soup Plate" Silver Print 1905
"Young Woman with Elephantiasis from Scarlet Fever" Artotype 1878
"Hospital Gangrene" Albumen print 1865
"Girl with Large Foot Jumping Rope" Cabinet Card 1895
Many of the photographs are taken of the dead and wounded from America's Civil War. One of the saddest is labeled "A Morning's Work," an 1865 Albumen print credited to Reed B. Bontecou, M.D. It consists of a pile of amputated legs and feet.
Each of the forty prints in this book is explained in a separate appendix by Stanley B. Burns, M.D. For instance "A Morning's Work" is described as follows:
"This photograph graphically documents Civil War devastation. More than 625,000 men died, one of every four that fought. In addition, more than 400,000 were wounded. Infections, chronic diarrhea and dysentery killed tens of thousands in the years following the war as a ravaged generation and a young nation continued to pay the cost of the war."
"Masterpieces of Medical Photography" is a rare collector's item that should be cherished by medical professionals, photographers, and historians who are interested in the Civil War and nineteenth century medicine.

A Not Entirely Benign Procedure Review

I am a biology major/ pre-med student at UCLA, though it is through my English class that I found this book. Simply put, this novel made me think. I continuously wondered, "can i handle 'dog dissection'... will I be able to memorize all of the countless facts about all these rare diseases?" An entire section of the book is devoted to bioethical issues, including one essay entitled, "DNR," (do not resuscitate). I began questioning myself, "is it fair to bring someone back just so that they can suffer longer with the same disease?" If you plan on going to medical school, reading this book is a must, and a joy; it is perfect for pre-meds.

Interpreting the Medical Literature Review

A statistician might find Gehlbach's explanations a bit too simplistic, but I think it gives a fantastic overview of how to approach interpretation of journal articles. An attending asked us to buy the second edition of this book when I was a 3rd Year med student, and I still use it today teaching residents. He does an excellent job using examples from the literature to illustrate his points. And, unlike other statistical texts, the index can help you grasp topics like the null hypothesis or type I error very quickly.
