Harvard Med: The Story Behind America's Premier Medical School and the Making of America's Do ctors Review

Harvard Med: The Story Behind America's Premier Medical School and the Making of America's Do ctors
Average Reviews:

After I read the book "Becoming a doctor," I became interested in reading books about medical students. So I started reading this book. I have to say that I am disappointed about its content. Although the author declared in the beginning that this is not a book about any particular medical students, I still expected that he would actually tell us some inside stories about Harvard Med.
From all I can remember, he only talked about orientation day, cadaver dissection period, then graduation day. It happens at all other medical schools. Other than the superficial things, he could have spent some time on explaining and exploring the extra materials that Harvard Med provides. I still do not know much about how the students at Harvard are learning medicine. What makes Harvard's teaching so different and so much better than other medical schools? He failed to explain it.
This content doesn't really fit with the book title.
Some of the chapters are not really related to Harvard Med. It has quite a few intensive personal interviews. However, it seems that the author were using those people to express his own views about the impersonal services HMOs that are taking quality patient time which doctors may provide. That is all he talks about, and there was no other kinds of opinions that those doctors, students were expressing. And this part of the conversation is over expressed in this book.
Overall, it is not all about Harvard med. It is really just a collection of random Harvard Med articles.

Dr. Stengler's book is an easy to use, fact-filled book. I have used alternative medicine extensively for the past 7 years, yet I found so much new information in this book. It is comprehensive, all the topics are explained well and easy to understand and implement, so that even a "beginner" would benefit greatly from it.
This book deserves at least a 5 Star review.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I work on health care IT in Germany and this book provides good mix of theory and practice. I particularly liked the insight into how much computer science is hidden behind key health care problems like grouping or searching patient records. I would recommend it to any health IT pprofessional who wants to go deeper into the EHR management.

Exploiting the rich information found in electronic health records (EHRs) can facilitate better medical research and improve the quality of medical practice. Until now, a trivial amount of research has been published on the challenges of leveraging this information. Addressing these challenges, Information Discovery on Electronic Health Records explores the technology to unleash the data stored in EHRs.Assembling a truly interdisciplinary team of experts, the book tackles medical privacy concerns, the lack of standardization for the representation of EHRs, missing or incorrect values, and the availability of multiple rich health ontologies. It looks at how to search the EHR collection given a user query and return relevant fragments from the EHRs. It also explains how to mine the EHR collection to extract interesting patterns, group entities to various classes, or decide whether an EHR satisfies a given property. Most of the book focuses on textual or numeric data of EHRs, where more searching and mining progress has occurred. A chapter on the processing of medical images is also included.Maintaining a uniform style across chapters and minimizing technical jargon, this book presents the various ways to extract useful knowledge from EHRs. It skillfully discusses how EHR data can be effectively searched and mined.

Geology and Health: Closing the Gap Review

The Editors of 'Geology and Health' have produced a collection of papers that will be of great interest to medical specialists, biologists, and geologists. Interdisciplinary studies on natural hazzards such as arsenic in groundwater and geochemical concentrations of toxic heavy metals in soils are required to understand the origins and pathways of some diseases. This new interest in geomedicine has been stimulated by EPA regulations and by advanced laboratory intstruments that produce extremely accurate chemical data on toxic concentrations in water, soil, and air. This will be an excellent textbook to stimulate university students to explore a vast domain between public health and earth sciences.

The Mystery of Breathing: A Novel Review

The Mystery of Breathing: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Mystery of Breathing works on a number of levels. The novel is unsurpassed as a piece of literary fiction, but it also works as an intellectually astute character study, a riveting thriller, and as an insight into the world of premature babies and the medical professionals who fight to save their lives. Klass peppers her narrative with short, sharp sentences and alternatively jumps between the past and the present; the result is a narrative that has an almost urgent and frenzied quality, fitting perfectly with the concurrent themes of ambition and career.
The main protagonist in the Mystery of Breathing is Maggie Claymore, a leading neonatologist at a busy Boston hospital. She's absolutely committed to her work - she works long hours, and fanatically assists in bringing the smallest and sickest babies back to life. Her loyal husband Dan, who also works as a doctor for the underprivileged, understands her commitment, and generally supports her in her endeavors.
Maggie is organized, disciplined, and reliable - "a neat person who needs her world to be neat." She's also an excellent, compassionate and ambitious practitioner, but she has a tendency to be egotistical, arrogant and "far too wedded to her own arguments." She thinks nothing of berating other doctors and inexperienced medical interns for being hesitant and not knowing enough about their job. The novel opens with her dramatic resuscitation of a premature baby, who teetered on the verge of death until Maggie's skill helps the tiny lungs take a breath. Then, in front of nurses and staff, she chews out a resident for not being more prepared for emergencies.
The same day she gets a malicious and hate-filled letter that vilifies her as being evil and self-satisfied. Soon letters blasting her competence and hinting at her responsibility in the death of a child are posted on walls around the hospital and are being sent to hospital officials. One evening, she returns to her office to find a bedpan full of someone's nasty diarrhea on her desk. Maggie's world of professional security and temerity begins to fall apart as the administrators hire a detective to frantically find the letter writer. But the damage is already done - her co-workers are whispering behind her back, and many of the colleagues start admitting that Maggie - determined to save every baby's life no matter the cost - is far too aggressive in reviving infants who will more than likely end up with brain damage or serious health problems.

Klass juxtaposes Maggie's modern dramas with a look back at her life as a child, and as a teenager where her religiously conservative, unfocussed mother, Annalisa tries to instill a "cramped and pinched life" into Maggie. Good friends who felt sorry for her poor and single state so carefully scrutinized Annalisa. But Maggie is an example of a modern woman who has reinvented herself, her home, her sex life, and her personal relationships. She realizes that she doesn't have to grow up to live the life in which she was raised and that she can pick and choose a life from "the great treasure chamber of the world."
Much of the narrative focuses on Maggie's internal life, and as the smear campaign gets worse, a conflict begins to rage within her. She finds herself asking why she's here and what she's feeling. Maybe her experiences in the neonatal unit will make her a more understanding person, aware of her own vulnerability and of the quirks and turns of fate. The Mystery of Breathing is a finely balanced, subtle novel that says a lot about the costs of career, the revelations of our hidden secrets, and the fear of being exposed. Mike Leonard November 04.

A System of Orthopaedic Medicine Review

Hello
This book is one of the best books I have ever read in orthopaedic medicine. It works very well for both MD's and PT's. It has a very organized chapters that takes you through history, clinical examination and their interpretation smoothly. It helps very well to define the anatomical structure that is at fault and gives you the best way to treat it. Note that this book is entirely based on Cyriax concept. However it's updated very well. Also you should know that the biomechanical assessment is out of scope of this book. It is purely pathoanatomical reference. If you are a physical therapist and you need to understand things better, this is the book you need to get.

I only recently started following Michelle's blog and pre-ordered the book on a whim, but I'm so glad I did. I will be recommending this book to all of my med school friends. Her writing is clever and intelligent and I couldn't stop reading this account of her journey to being a doctor and a mother. As a first year medical student, I've worried about exactly the same issues that she went through. The relentless candor of this book combined with her witty patient stories makes for an entertaining read in which, for the first time, I truly felt that I understood what it's like to be a resident. Her account is inspiring, and brightens the light at the end of the tunnel for those of us who place highest priority on both our family and our work.

Michelle Au started medical school armed only with a surfeit of idealism, a handful of old ER episodes for reference, and some vague notion about "helping people."This Won't Hurt a Bit is the story of how she grew up and became a real doctor. It's a no-holds-barred account of what a modern medical education feels like, from the grim to the ridiculous, from the heartwarming to the obscene. Unlike most medical memoirs, however, this one details the author's struggles to maintain a life outside of the hospital, in the small amount of free time she had to live it. And, after she and her husband have a baby early in both their medical residencies, Au explores the demands of being a parent with those of a physician, two all-consuming jobs in which the lives of others are very literally in her hands.Au's stories range from hilarious to heartbreaking and hit every note in between, proving more than anything that the creation of a new doctor (and a new parent) is far messier, far more uncertain, and far more gratifying than one could ever expect.

AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and the Geography of Blame (Comparative Studies of Health Systems and Medical Care) Review

AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and the Geography of Blame (Comparative Studies of Health Systems and Medical Care)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Farmer's excellent historical ethnography of Haitian illness (as seen through the contemporary context of the world AIDS epidemic), proves the necessity of developing anthropological approaches to understanding health systems and implementing medical care. The diagnosis and analysis of sickness, disease, illness, and treatment should go hand-in-hand with the cultural understanding of local systems of blame, accusation, causation, and cure. Where most approaches to medicine are based on the "Westernized" first-world nations' understanding of the causes of illness (tainted as well, as Farmer shows, by systematic "blame the victim" and shame techniques), the adoption of these approaches in treating the illnesses of other peoples can be catastrophic. Three ethnographies make up the structure of a detailed historical inquiry )
The longstanding tradition of conceiving of illness through the lens of powerlessness shapes the contemporary lives of the people in Haiti with whom Farmer worked. Although they could see the effects of the illness, people in this region were obsessed with the cause of the illness, and felt the need to understand AIDS through a constructed narrative of blame. A deep belief in their religion led villagers to look for the source of witchcraft that could possibly be harming them, and elaborate stories about neighbors, jealousies, and rivalries flourished as a result. Any improvement in the standing of one member of the society (through wealth, status, relationships, acquisition of property or food, or political power through employment or marriage) adds to the structure of distrust and blame.
Farmer's book shows how disturbingly complex and deep the layers of mistrust, misinformation, and the effects of racism, are. Among the medical hypotheses for the probable exposure is the theory of Haitian sex-workers' contacts through gay tourists to the early strains of HIV. Farmer outlines the long history of Haiti as a gay tourist attraction, and Duvalier's encouragement of tourism as a boost to the domestic economy. Although the possible cause of the gay sex trade for HIV exposure has not been confirmed, medical establishments in the U.S. based their theories of causation on other factors, such as Haitian religious practices. These theories were, in truth, reinforcing longstanding ignorance and racist misunderstandings about Haitian vodou. Stereotypes and racial profiling of Haitian citizenship as a "risk factor" (one of the "Four H's" along with hemophiliac, homosexual, and heroin user), contributed to public policies against Haitian immigrants. Haitians' belief that they are being attacked by some evil sorcery in the guise of a fatal illness called sida falls into place amidst the context of extreme antagonism and injustice.
While reading this book, I was compelled to ask myself if there isn't some truth in Haitians' understanding of AIDS as the result of malicious sorcery. Haiti was the only American society to successfully result from the direct action of a revolution against slavery and colonialism. As such, the small nation governed by creoles and black ex-slaves presented a threat to North and South American colonial societies, which were firmly entrenched in slave labor economic systems. Historically, the threat of a repeat of the Haitian revolution must have terrified white European landowners. This terror of African power and strength has been passed on in a racist legacy, adapted to political policies and nationalist agendas, and still exists in ignorant beliefs about AIDS and its causes. Haitians believe that they are victims of a longstanding racist agenda, and they may in fact be right. Farmer's book begins to illuminate some of the complicated historical and ethnographic realities of the overlapping connections between illness and racism, and between causes and effects.

Whether you are an experienced "traveler", new to the profession, or considering a traveling healthcare career, this book is for you. Barry and Donna Padgett have traveled for almost eight years: from Boston to Seattle . . . from Georgia to Alaska. They have produced this concise manual based on their experiences with facilities, agencies, and other travelers. It is an "insight" into what it takes to be a successful traveler.

Prologue - A short narrative about the authors and the book.

Part 1 - What s It All About?Describes the traveling healthcare industry and how it began. It helps you evaluate your situation and decide if traveling is right for you. It includes the roles of the facilities, agencies, and travelers. Also included are the characteristics of a good traveler, advantages and disadvantages of traveling, and traveling with others (including your pet). Factors involved in filling openings, areas of expertise needed, seasonal assignments, independent contracting, and internet resources are also discussed.

Part 2 The Nuts and Bolts of TravelingOutlines the "nitty gritty" details important to every traveler: such as housing issues and options, details of benefits offered, how tax advantage programs work, contract clauses, taxes, calculating your pay items, the pitfalls of working less than full time, licensing, your 401(k), and other issues.

Part 3 Ready to Take the Plunge?Do you think traveling is right for you? If so, Part 3 gets your new career off to a good start. It helps you choose and apply to agencies, negotiate and finalize your assignment, and helps prepare you to pack up and hit the road. It also includes a discussion of bill rates and how your wages, benefits, and tax-free reimbursements are allocated. An entire chapter takes you step-by-step from leaving your permanent job through your first assignment . . . and beyond.

Part 4 Additional TopicsContains additional topics of interest such as working strikes, breaking your contract, employment testing, the future of traveling, and special California issues. It also discusses the darker side of traveling describing some "interesting" aspects of working with facilities, agencies, and other travelers.

Included are 64 pages of full color photos showing some of Barry and Donna's adventures. Featuring hardcover binding and offset printing, this quality product is a must for every traveler's library.

Part I: Living Well
Part II: Common Conditions and Concerns Through Life's Stages
Part III: Making Sense of Your Symptoms
Part IV: First Aid and Emergency Care

Part V: Diseases and Disorders
Part VI: Tests and Treatments
Glossary and Resources
Index
Each disease mentioned contains information about key signs and symptoms, a basic description of the disease, illustrations, how the disease is diagnosed, potential consequences, information on treatment, and information on prevention.
The comprehensive index in the third edition is easy to use. For example, information on "scoliosis" can be found on pages 235, 603, 774, 980, and 981. (Page 980 features an illustration.)
There is also a complete listing of resources for more information including addresses, phone numbers and Web sites. I particularly like the section on symptoms. You can just look up a symptom such as "back pain" and learn more about conditions that cause back pain. The book then directs you to the page containing detailed information about that condition.
I'm looking forward to what I hope will be the interactive DVD version of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book in the future.

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM): A Practical Introduction and Survival Guide Review

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM): A Practical Introduction and Survival Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book bridges gaps, period.
If you need to work with this standard, at very least skim this book. What it doesn't cover in detail, it provides an excellent overview of. It is a great "jumping off" point; so much so, that the language explanation alone is just shy of enough to write your own PACS software applications for the talented developer. Prior to reading this book, I did have previous experience working with DICOM, HL7 and PACS; however, after reading the book I realized how little I knew and truly understood and my shingle says "PACS Administrator".
This book is excellent for those responsible for the technical workflow of any medical imaging system or PACS. It provides a thorough history of the development of the standard and its application over time. While it aptly covers items of clinical concern like image quality, manipulation, and availability, it additionally provides a comprehensive breakdown of the "language" of DICOM. At first, many of those without backgrounds in binary/hexadecimal and software coding may find this language discussion overwhelming, but it is an invaluable read if you stick with it (just rely on your math and logic skills and don't fret the details). Finally, it addresses all current topics in the field (like teleradiology and image mobility), and provides some great real world examples and anecdotes.
For those that are more clinically oriented, there are probably more appropriately written materials, but I would still consider 1/2 of this book as required reading.
