I work in an Oncology office. I deal with new chemotherapy drugs on a daily basis. This book is very informative and easy to understand so I can better administer the drugs in a safe and effective manner. It is also a very useful teaching tool so I can explain to the patients, exactly what they are receiving and the effects the drug will have on them. This teaching tool should be in every oncology clinic.
I appreciate the Amazon site as well. They made the purchase process customer friendly and the availability of products are endless.
Thank-you
Cindy

Ibn Sina s famous Canon of Medicine (Qanun fi al-tibb) comes to life in English with this translation. It is a clear and ordered Summa of all the medical knowledge of Ibn Sina s time augmented from his own observations. It is divided into five books. The first contains generalities concerning the human body, sickness, health and general treatment and therapeutics (the only volume translated here). The second contains the materia medica and the pharmacology of herbs. Three methods agreement, difference and concomitant variations are usually regarded as characteristic of modern science. The third book deals with special pathology, studied by organs, or rather by systems. The fourth book opens with the famous treatise on fevers; then follow the treatise on signs, symptoms, diagnostics and prognostics, minor surgery, tumors, wounds, fractures and bites and that on poisons. The fifth book contains the pharmacopoeia. Because the Canon constituted a monumental unity which maintained its authority until modern times it served as a basis for 700 years of medical teaching and practice and is a proven alternative medicine technique.

Well written and adequate for the student of pharmacy. However for this audience I would recommend Wilson and Gisvold's Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry 11th Ed, because the figures and text are more complete providing a clearer more concise and rigorous treatment of the subject.

The Sixth Edition of this well-known text has been fully revised and updated to meet the changing curricula of medicinal chemistry courses. Emphasis is on patient-focused pharmaceutical care and on the pharmacist as a therapeutic consultant, rather than a chemist.
A new disease state management section explains appropriate therapeutic options for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and men's and women's health problems. Also new to this edition: Clinical Significance boxes, Drug Lists at the beginning of appropriate chapters, and an eight-page color insert with detailed illustrations of drug structures.

Spitz and Fisher's Medicolegal Investigation of Death: Guidelines for the Application of Pathology to Crime Investigation Review

Spitz and Fisher's Medicolegal Investigation of Death: Guidelines for the Application of Pathology to Crime Investigation
Average Reviews:

At first I was hesitant to spend $120 on a reference book I couldn't manually look through (aside from the pages available for viewing through Amazon), but I took a chance. As a forensic scientist who is new to death investigation, this reference is well worth the money. From front to back, this book is packed with well-written, thorough discussions of the different causes and manners of death. The written information, complimented by hundreds of photos and illustrations, is presented in terms that are comprehensible even to those without a background in forensic pathology or medicine. For the amount and quality of information packed into this large volume, $120 is actually a steal. I absolutely recommend this reference for anyone who has a role in death investigation. Students of forensic science, if you're too broke to buy this, put it on your wish list and hope you get it as a graduation gift. It's a must-have that is worth the three-digit price tag.

Medical Malpractice Review

Medical Malpractice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A good book on a contentious topic. Written by an experienced health care economist and an attorney, the authors attempt to provide a broad perspective on medical malpractice. Sloan and Chepke agree that there are serious problems with medical malpractice, but not the problems generally discussed in most public forums. The intermittant public attention paid to this issue is driven often by intermittant malpractice 'crises' in which insurers withdraw from markets, premiums escalate sharply, and there is fear of consequent physician withdrawal from states with sharply rising premiums. A common popular perception of these crises is that they are driven by excessive tort litigation and awards. In fact, there is little evidence for this explanation and recurrent malpractice insurance crises apparently have their roots in other phenomena, notably cyclical features of the insurance industry. Another common public point of discussion is that malpractice litigation is a significant contributor to rising health care costs. The available evidence, however, suggests that malpractice torts have at best a modest effect on health care costs.
Where Sloan and Chepke see major problems with malpractice torts is their apparent failure to have an impact on the high rate of serious medical errors in the USA. In addition, the data cited by Sloan and Chepke indicates that the tort system does a poor and inefficient job of compensating individuals injured through negligence. Sloan and Chepke discuss the first generation of tort reforms which are mainly caps on awards. The major effects of these reforms has been indeed to reduce awards, claims, and insurance premiums with the primary beneficiaries being physicians and insurers. It appears that first generation reforms are a stereotypical example of successful interest group lobbying of state legislatures with modest general public benefits.
Much of the book is a systematic discussion of proposed reforms including such topics as alternative dispute resolution, specialized health courts, no-fault procedures, and a number of others. These discussions are generally thorough, contain nice summaries of the usually limited evidence, and discouraging in the sense that Sloan and Chepke demonstrate the uncertainties that any proposed reforms will work and point out the pragmatic political obstacles to most of these proposed reforms.
Sloan and Chepke conclude with a chapter proposing a series of modest reforms, particularly focused on making hospitals or hospital systems the focus on malpractice litigation in the hope that this will produce incentives to improve patient safety. This is reasonable and approaches like the one proposed are used by some academic hospital systems where physicians are employees.
Sloan and Chepke may make a couple of errors. As they point out, the tort system does a poor job of identifying and compensating meritorious claims. At the same time, a lot of claims pursued do lack merit. But this irrational element is one of the things that physicians most dislike about the present system. While the tort system may not be the 'lottery' claimed by many critics, its irrational enough to be worrisome to health care providers. There is also some recent evidence that some forms of torts do reduce medical errors. Nonetheless, Sloan and Chepke's analysis is convincing and their modest suggestions for reform quite reasonable.

Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Robbins Pathology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no doubt majority of medical students throughout the world use this book. And I do think it is very informative. But you must be willing to spend a lot of time reading it, especially if this is the only book you plan on using in pathology. Because it takes a lot of time to comb through the huge amount of info in this book to pick out what is important for medical students to remember. So I would recommend most medical students to also buy Rapid Review Pathology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access because it is much more clinically oriented and also gives you the pathophysiology behind the symptoms which Robbins does not. I also feel that though Robbins does a good job mentioning the symptoms in a concise manner, it could do a lot better integrating the symptoms with the pathology. So I would use this book as a reference book in the truest sense. Meaning I would get a brief idea of the topic from Rapid Review or some other source and then read Robbins if you have time. But for certain things you will probably have to go directly to Robbins. For example, Robbins does a great job with the morphology, which is some what lacking in most review books like Rapid Review and BRS. I would buy the book only if you have a good amount of time to learn the subject or just really like pathology. But i would NOT buy it if you are
1. looking for a quick review, ie before step 1 (because really most of info in this book wont help there)
2. if you dont have a lot of time to focus solely on pathology and this book. Because as I said it will take time for you to read through all the info and pick out important points that you need to learn. And on top of that to be able to do this, you will first have to get use to the writing style of this book which is very different. (often study based)
As for difference between 7th and 8th editions. I personally dont think there is that much of a difference. The authors mention extensively redoing the first chapter and third. But other than that I think its mostly reorganizing and making it look more pleasing. ie cut from here and paste there. So I dont think its worth buying 8th if you have the 7th. And if you are really tight on cash I would buy the 7th. I really don't think they have changed the info at all specially in systemic pathology.

Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds Review

Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cheating Death is an incredibly well-organized, informative and educational little tome. It reads like a novelized cross between a discovery health special and an episode of Rescue 911. The drama is there as Gupta details harrowing stories of near death intermixed with an accounting of the scientific possibility and theory surrounding all things death related. Along with chapters detailing new findings about CPR and the benefits of hypothermic treatment, Gupta surprises with medically dubious topics such as suspended animation, life after death, and miracles. It makes for a bizarre combination of topics, and an even more interesting read. The author utilizes an odd blend of first, second and third person narration which awkwardly works for the material. Gupta resists taking sides in any scientific debate allowing the heroic doctors, anecdotal cases, and studies to speak for him. Cheating Death covers a lot of technical subject matter, some of which is life saving information, but Gupta takes the time to walk the lay person through his terminology. I can not think of anyone who would not benefit from this read.

Perinatal Imaging: From Ultrasound to MR Imaging (Medical Radiology / Diagnostic Imaging)

This is a european effort to cover the developing field of prenatal imaging and diagnosis. It is up to date, but covers topics in much the same way as its more thorough american counterparts (e.g. Fetology). It follows a systematic approach (not always problem-oriented) and has fairly limited fetal MRI coverage (not what one might expect from the title). Overall, it is a worthwhile purchase for the maternal-fetal medicine specialist who plans to practice in Europe and is looking for a concise version of prenatal diagnostic imaging.

The Merck Manual of Medical Information: Home Edition (Merck Manual Home Health Handbook) Review

The Merck Manual of Medical Information: Home Edition (Merck Manual Home Health Handbook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This reference book is easy to use and understand. When I first leaned of this home edition version of the Merck manual I was hesitant. Over the years many books have been published that are medical in nature, some published by doctors, but the content is watered down or so vague that a layperson doesn't derive much information from it. Some books are actually condescending in attitude, some patronizing. So many books briefly skim symptoms and then caution to call a physician for more information.
Recently my son was diagnosed on the phone by our pediatrician with chicken pox and it was made clear that they did not want to see him for a physical exam. I was given a tiny bit of information by the office staff but was still curious for more information. I spent over an hour surfing the Internet looking for information but found watered down information, repeated many times over on multiple websites, including some written by physicians intended for laypeople to use. I looked at my parenting books written by doctors (one titled "The Portable Pediatrician", no less) and was still lacking any substantial information. When I consulted the Merck Manual home edition, (which I had forgotten I bought recently and had not yet used), I was surprised at the level of information given. There are many details that I had not found elsewhere, such as number of days from exposure to outbreak, how long it takes the pox to change from first appearance to crusted over, about how long the infection lasts, and treatment suggestions. Reasons why some children have a mild outbreak vs. a severe outbreak were even provided, something I had not found anywhere else.
The information here is not dumbed down in that it is not so vague that it is not useful. There is a lot of information here but it is written in a style for the layperson to understand. I appreciated the writing style, which presents information to the non-physician without putting on airs.
Anyone who, like me, prefers to gather information and learn about things rather than making a call or office visit to their doctor to get just one opinion will appreciate owning this book. At about 1500 pages it covers many illnesses and ailments. If you are interested in this book I suggest you buy it so that you have it at your fingertips 24 hours a day, for whatever may arise. I am not suggesting this take the place of a doctor, but I know from working with physicians that there are certain calls that are non-emergent in nature that are not appreciated when the office is closed!
If you are looking for a book about children's ailments that encompasses not only western medicine but lists an array of other treatment methods, I suggest Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child: A Practical A-To-Z Reference to Natural and Conventional Treatments for Infants and Children by Janet Zand. I found this to be an excellent companion to the Merck manual, home edition. The Merck manual gives more information about the disease or ailment itself through a Western medicine viewpoint while the Zand's books' specialty is sharing treatment options grouped by category (herbal, homeopathic, western, etc.).

Doctors: The Illustrated History of Medical Pioneers Review

Doctors: The Illustrated History of Medical Pioneers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sherwin Nuland's writings like How We Die: Reflections on Life's Final Chapter, How We Live, The Mysteries Within: A Surgeon Explores Myth, Medicine, and the Human Body and particularly, Doctors: The Biography of Medicine have set a very high standard for medical non-fiction and paticularly for popular books on the history of medicine. This new book does not bring much new information forward that cannot be found in "Doctors" but the lavish illustrations are very nice and include many that I've never seen before.
The book chronologically presents the great personalities, geniuses, egos, and spectacularly disfunctional people who have brought us Western medicine. Dr. Nuland is definitely a champion of viewing medical history as a history of progressing from ignorance to enlightenment but he is very cognizant to put each medical discovery in the context of its time and not to judge by modern standards of scientific accuracy. Rather, he traces how the use of experiment and observation have been key to the development of effective healing throughout the ages. When discussing Galen and Vesalius it is difficult for the reader not to echo his irritation as he describes the fourteen centuries of blind obedience to authority before Vesalius wrote the "Fabrica".
While this topic may sound very dry and academic, I find his writing to be easily-paced and readable. This book could be viewed as a companion piece to "Doctors" but it stands well on its own primarily due to the illustrations, which are missing entirely from "Doctors."

Click Here to see more reviews about: Doctors: The Illustrated History of Medical Pioneers

National Book Award-winner and surgeon Sherwin B. Nuland tells the extraordinary story of the development of modern medicine through compelling studies of the great innovators and pioneers. Artfully selected illustrations bring the history of medicine to life as never before. This brilliant collection of life portraits of physicianscientists shows how their deeds and determination paved the way for future breakthroughs in medicine. Ranging from the legendary father of medicine, Hippocrates, to Helen Taussig, the founder of pediatric cardiology, the book is filled with the spirit of ideas and the thrill of discovery. Other medical pioneers profiled include Galen, Andreas Vesalius, Ambroise Paré, William Harvey, Giovanni Morgagni, John Hunter, René Laennec, Ignac Semmelweis, Rudolf Virchow, Joseph Lister, and William Stewart Halsted. Artwork and photography are married to Nuland's vivid narrative here for the first time, turning a "reading" book by a bestselling author into a treasured gift book for medical professionals and science enthusiasts.

Evidence of Harm: Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic: A Medical Controversy Review

Evidence of Harm: Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic: A Medical Controversy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the parent of a very high-functioning autistic child, I used to discount any relationship between vaccines and autism. This all changed as I gradually realized how dismal and pharmaceutical-dependent the conventional approach to autism really is. I put aside all preconceptions and reexamined the issue. Each day I found another study implicating mercury in vaccines, including very recent work by researchers such as Jill James, Mady Hornig and Thomas Burbacher. I also found very serious flaws in the studies used to reassure parents that there is nothing wrong with injecting mercury into an infant. I found disturbing similarities between the rhetoric used to defend mercury in medicine today and the rhetoric used 70 years ago to defend lead in paint. While I do not claim that the case has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, I have seen enough to act on the assumption that it is valid. My child's response to the conservative measures we have used in the past few months have only solidified my persuasion.
Kirby's book is an extremely thorough compilation of all the studies, political ramifications, and personal stories that make up the mercury-autism controversy. His research paralleled my own explorations and added some behind-the-scenes information as well. He also made every effort to present both sides of the issue but was hampered in this by the refusal of the CDC, AAP, pharmaceutical companies and others to grant interviews. He is in no way, shape, or form anti-vaccine. I would also like to point out that he did not confuse the MMR and thimerosal issues--perhaps another reader missed Kirby's full explanation of the theoretical interplay between the two as well as his full explanation of what happened with Andrew Wakefield's study in the Lancet, which is much more complex than a simple retraction.
It strikes me as odd if not suspect that any physician would argue that research into the thimerosal issue should be halted when the CDC itself has called for more study, when more and more autistic children are responding to treatment for mercury poisoning and when many of the key players in the research effort are medical doctors who also happen to be parents of autistic children. These are people who have put their names out in the open, people such as Alan Clark, MD, of Missouri, who runs the (...)website with his wife and who has a child who developed Asperger's following two flu shots.
Kirby shows nothing but respect for autistic children and adults. One of the key characters in the book is a researcher with Asperger's and he warmly depicts her creative and non-conformist approach to life. I think it is important to note that there are many wonderful autistic people who are brilliant, creative, free-thinkers, but there are also many non-autistic people who are brilliant, creative, free-thinkers. My child is extremely bright, imaginative, honest, intense and funny, but this is because that's who he is not because he's autistic. In fact, these positives only shine when he is not burdened by anxiety, overwhelmed by normal sensory stimuli or caught in a pattern of inflexibility as he is sometimes due to autism. I'm sure autism has left some indelible mark on his personality and it is true that it is not ALL bad, just as a blind person's vivid sense of hearing is not bad. And of course we must all respect and honor differences, as Kirby does so very well. That is not to say that autism is benign. I imagine the parents of a severely autistic child would find this idea alternately infuriating and laughable.
I strongly recommend reading this book. If you're a health care provider, it will explain where parents are coming from. If you're wanting a summation of the issue, it is a great source. If you have nothing to do with autism or mercury, it's still a compelling story. If you have a child with autism, well . . . I can't recommend it enough; however, I would also recommend that you do your own research. Don't take my word for it--or anyone else's--until you've read the actual primary studies, not the spin that gets reported in much of the media. You may encounter something quite unexpected. I certainly did.
