If That Ever Happens to Me: Making Life and Death Decisions after Terri Schiavo (Studies in Social Medicine) Review

If That Ever Happens to Me: Making Life and Death Decisions after Terri Schiavo (Studies in Social Medicine)
Average Reviews:

Shepherd's book is a readable, thoughtful, balanced look at the strange, sad case of Terri Schiavo, peeling back the media attention and hysteria to look at the fundamental aspects of how should we treat such cases from the viewpoint of patients, loved ones and society as a whole. The author strikes the right balance of legal and bio-ethical expertise and just plain common sense, offering suggestions that differentiate between those patients in permanent vegetative states (as Terri was) and those terminally ill, profoundly disabled or in states of minimal consciousness. One of the book's great attributes is Shepherd's willingness (rare in my experience) to second-guess even her own suggestions, while at the same time recognizing that everyone comes to this issue with differing viewpoints, insights, fears and beliefs. Her approach of thoughtful, factual, almost individualized assessment of such difficult cases seems clear-headed, reasonable and a guiding light for our policy-makers. Highly, highly recommended.

Every day, thousands of people quietly face decisions as agonizing as those made famous in the Terri Schiavo case. Throughout that controversy, all kinds of people-politicians, religious leaders, legal and medical experts-made emphatic statements about the facts and offered even more certain opinions about what should be done. To many, courts were either ordering Terri's death by starvation or vindicating her constitutional rights. Both sides called for simple answers. If That Ever Happens to Me details why these simple answers were not right for Terri Schiavo and why they are not right for end-of-life decisions today.
Lois Shepherd looks behind labels like "starvation," "care," or "medical treatment" to consider what care and feeding really mean, when feeding tubes might be removed, and why disability groups, the faithful, and even the dying themselves often suggest end-of-life solutions that they might later regret. For example, Shepherd cautions against living wills as a pat answer. She provides evidence that demanding letter-perfect documents can actually weaken, rather than bolster, patient choice.
The actions taken and decisions made during Terri Schiavo's final years will continue to have repercussions for thousands of others-those nearing death, their families, health-care professionals, attorneys, lawmakers, clergy, media, researchers, and ethicists. If That Ever Happens to Me is an excellent choice for anyone interested in end-of-life law, policy, and ethics-particularly readers seeking a deeper understanding of the issues raised by Terri Schiavo's case.

Bitten: True Medical Stories of Bites and Stings Review

Bitten: True Medical Stories of Bites and Stings
Average Reviews:

This well-written and most informative book is a real eye-opener. It made me wonder how it is that the human race has managed to survive this long, given the dangers that lurk out in nature. The author, a physician specializing in infection disease, has done an excellent job in describing the various hazards of being bitten or stung. She discusses the "dangerous" creatures themselves, the biological effects on humans of their bites, stings, etc., and, most importantly, several real life cases - these add a powerful element of reality to the potential dangers involved. Creatures discussed vary from ants, spiders and snails, all the way to monkeys and humans. This book is written in an engaging and authoritative style, and is very difficult to put down. All humans should read it.

Sexology (Family Medical Edition) Review

Sexology (Family Medical Edition)

I was thrilled to find a more pristine copy of this book to replace my crumbing 1904 version. This book is the origins of the myth that "female intelligence is a freak of nature" and that boys masturbating will cause blindness and insanity among many other misconceptions and beliefs. I had heard about it as a kid and spent many years scouring used books stores (WAY before the internet) before I finally found a copy. It was so fragile that I actually scanned it in my computer and manually proofed it so I could preserve the disintegrating copy. Whenever I need a good laugh, I pick up this volume - which was certainly NOT intended to amuse when written. There are now several copies available in the Amazon Marketplace at varying prices and conditions. If you are at all interested in studying our social history and mores, this is a great book to add to your collection!

Delightfully preserved memoirs and photos of lives of medical pioneers long ago in the seacoast New Hampshire town of Portsmouth, the reader gleans a deep appreciation for the medical care we so often diss. As a nurse at the current Portsmouth Hospital, I loved reading about the roots of the hearty predecessors that made my job possible. The ledgers are fun to read with very different terminology than we now use.

Y2K Compliance Manual for the Medical Office Review

Y2K Compliance Manual for the Medical Office

I knew going into this book that we had to do something to prepare our practice for Y2K but thought that the majority of problems were isolated to our internal systems. After reading through this manual, my eyes were opened to the real problems that we face. Sure, our own computers and systems still need to be tested but it is our ability to respond to issues that develop with outside dependecies that will make the difference between success and failure next year. I never considered many of the ideas or solutions that are offered in this book. I am grateful for reading it and feel much more confident in our ability to move ahead. This is not a technical manual but rather a common sense business approach to an unavoidable problem.

Adenoviruses: Basic Biology to Gene Therapy (Medical Intelligence Unit 15)
Average Reviews:

Do you know how about my feeling when I got the book and skimmed through it at first? I found it is just what I am hungry for δΉ§it indeed is an excellent source of information for beginning the study and research of adenovirus and its application in gene therapy. The book represents the tremendous effort of the author in presenting a comprehensive map of adenovirus and covers both the biology of adenovirus as well as progress in gene therapy field. Indeed, it is very important for one to grasp the basic and systematic background knowledge and get insight into the update progress before he begins something positively, of course adenovirus-related research field also is no exception. And it is difficult for one to attain this goal within a short time without such a adenovirus topic-specific volume. At last, my suggestion for reader is that a shortcut for your successful Adv-story is to read it at first; for author is that it will be more comprehensive and practical if a particular chapter dealing with basic methodology is included in the second edition in future.

Great Medical Discoveries - Chemotherapy Review

Great Medical Discoveries - Chemotherapy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a time in everyone's life when a friend or loved one is touched by the cold grip of cancer. It is an indiscriminant disease that afflicts the very young, the very old and sometimes those in the prime of their lives. In Great Medical Discoveries-Chemotherapy, Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen artfully brings the reader through a history of chemotherapy from ancient times to the advances in modern technology. She introduces chemotherapy as a process of treating cancer with chemicals and brings us through its evolution from crude beginnings to modern medicine.
Throughout the book are factual tidbits, illustrations and photos that further the explanation of key points within the text.
My two cents:
Great Medical Discoveries-Chemotherapy is an educational text aimed at children in grades 7-12, but I believe that adults would also benefit from reading it. The text reads smoothly and is not littered with scientific jargon that would stump the average reader and require pre-reading of other scientific texts. The information and ideas presented are introduced through example and insight into the medical discoveries associated with chemotherapy. In each chapter, the author introduces a new aspect of chemotherapy through the history of its discovery.
I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others, interested in learning about chemotherapy. Great Medical Discoveries-Chemotherapy by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen reads smoothly and quickly, without the dryness you would normally find in science texts. Her style and flair for "telling a story" draws the reader in and guides him/ her down the road of discovery.
This book is an educational text that can stand on its own. I particularly enjoy reading on a subject that does not require pre-reading. The language and terms within the text are understandable for the average reader and the sections within the chapters flow together smoothly.
By introducing technology advances through history, the knowledge gained from the text is two-fold. The reader learns what discoveries were made and the sequence of events that led up to the discoveries. Having a scientific background, I was familiar with much of the factual information presented, but had very little pre-knowledge of the history behind the discoveries in chemotherapy. The history provided me with the "why" and "when" things happened. I have always found that it is easier to remember factual information if I know the "story" behind it. Bardhan-Quallen provides that "story," and the knowledge that is imparted is immeasurable. (...)

Cell Chemistry and Physiology: Part III, Volume 4C (Principles of Medical Biology) Review

Cell Chemistry and Physiology: Part III, Volume 4C (Principles of Medical Biology)

This book has some good title and context about ion transport across the cell membrane. Understanding of ions transport is very essentail way to study of cell membrane functions and its responses to stimuli. It is very good for any biological and medical students that have well known information about ionic events in and out of the cell. Some students don't suppose how ions act and transport across the cytoplasmic membranes. This book make better idea for ions function and ionic behavior in cells. Chapers of the book have well arrangement and good figures. I recommend it for study.

The first section of this volume consists of five chapters to the nature of membrane transport systems. A chapter on secondary active glucose transport has been omitted because this topic is slated to appear in the Nephrobiology module. Chapter 6 deals with oxidase control of plasma membrane proton transport, while chapter 7 addresses the question of how cell volume is regulated. Although we chose not to have a separate chapter covering additional co-transport systems namely, Na+ -K+ -2CI-, KCI, -HCO-3, as well as CI- -HCO-3 exchange and K+ and CI- movements through channels, the role of each in cell volume regulation is emphasized in Chapter 7.Instead of devoting an entire section to the thermodynamics of metabolism, we thought it desirable to have the subjects of medical imaging and NMR of cell metabolism discussed in some detail in two chapters. These are followed by a chapter on the thermodynamic instrument - the calorimeter. Calrimetry allows the measurement of net changes of heat in cells, tissues, organs and whole body. As will be recognized, heat dissipation does not arise only from chemical reactions but also from interactions between macromolecules and conformational changes in protein complexes and mass Ca2+ movement such as that occurring in contracting skeletal muscle. The last chapter provides an account of equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the enthalpy balance method. It reveals that calometric measurements are useful in studies of clinical and toxicological problems.

Anderson Ruffin Abbott (Canadian Medical Lives)

Anderson Ruffin Abbott is a name unfamiliar to many Canadians, but a man of great importance to the Afro-American community in Canada. Born in Toronto in 1837, he became the first Afro-American physician in Canada, and was one of only eight Afro-American surgeons in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. Despite constant racial prejudice, Anderson Abbott led an exemplary life, thus paving the way for future Afro-Americans in Canada. His story is one that deserves much more attention.

Anderson Ruffin Abbott, son of a wealthy properties speculator, pursued a classical education in preparation for a professional career.Graduating from the Toronto School of Medicine in 1861 he became the first Canadian of African descent to train as a physician. In 1863 he petitioned Abraham Lincoln and was appointed one of only eight black surgeons in the Union Army during the American Civil War.Following Lincoln's assassination, Mary Todd Lincoln bestowed on Abbott the plaid shawl Lincoln wore to his first inauguration. His career as physician, surgeon, Canada's first African Canadian coroner and Superintendent of Chicago's Provident Hospital and Training School gained him respect in both countries and allowed him to bear with tolerance and equanimity the racial prejudice that was never far below the surface.Active in civil affairs, church and cultural matters, he was also a lecturer as well as musician. An advocate of advanced yet basic education Abbott served as the President of the Wilberforce Educational Institute and later as administrator for the Dundas Mechanics' Institute.Although a physician by trade Abbott saw himself very much as scholar, a man of letters with many of his works published in various papers or journals in Canada and the United States in which he championed the causes of others particularly those of African descent. His military career had a profound affect on him and in 1890 he was elected a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, James S. Knowlton Post No. 532 in New York State and was later accorded the role of Surgeon and Aide-de-Camp.In his later years he returned to Toronto and is buried in the Toronto Necropolis.

Medical Risk Management Review

Medical Risk Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Medical Risk Management" is a timely volume addressing personal interactions, expectations, and complications between physicians and patients, although it is valuable and applicable to all medical professionals who have patient contact.
The book focuses on breaking both patient and physician personalities (and medical practice methodologies) down into different types, and follows by explaining the potential benefits and pitfalls (i.e., malpractice and sub-optimum care, and the potential for litigation) of interactions between physicians and patients with fundamentally similar and different outlooks and attitudes.
The book focuses on optimizing interactions to provide maximum quality health care, while minimizing the risks of malpractice lawsuits. It is quite good in helping practicing physicians understand their own personalities, predispositions, and biases in dealings with patients (and colleagues). The book is a bit redundant in some places, though it is very thorough in covering the material it sets out to discuss. The book epitomizes the value of interpersonal analysis and team building used with great success in other safety-critical industries (e.g., aviation) for several decades now.
For all practicing physicians interested in lowering legal liability and improving the quality of medical care delivered, I recommend this book. This book is also useful to safety professionals of other industries: although it is specific to medical practice, many of the human interaction and team building issues are equally applicable to other areas of human endeavor, especially areas where risks are high. I recommend this book to either of these groups of professionals.

Quantitative Dynamnic Telethermometry in Medical Diagnosis Management Review

Quantitative Dynamnic Telethermometry in Medical Diagnosis Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This monograph gives a good review of thermal dianosis down through the ages, but then drifts into wishland when it comes to the latest in thermal imaging. "Could", "would", should", and "may" are overused in making the case for thermography as a diagnostic tool for the future, with little real data to help the effort. A total lack of thermal images and graphics greatly limits the book. Bottom line: not worth the price unless you want to research the huge selection of references.

Image Analysis in Histology (Postgraduate Medical Science) Review

Image Analysis in Histology (Postgraduate Medical Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good text covering the important and expanding area of image analysis. However, to get the best out of it, one would need to be studying a course on Image Analysis (such as the MSc. run by the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London for whom the book is aimed), and using iamge analysis systems so as to put into practice the information detailed within the text.
The other main fault is that, to some extent, it demands a degree of knowledge of computer-based image systems as well as the reader knowing how to produce histological sections. Few students would have sufficient grounding in both areas to pick this book up and read it from cover to cover.
In summary, it is a good book for those studying image anlaysis (eg MSc.) and should be read in concert with lectures etc on this material, but it is not for general teaching use. If you are interested in this material, then you should first look at a copy from your library (or via inter-library loans service).

This volume provides a timely and useful introduction to the theory and practical application of image analysis in histology. This powerful research technique can be used to detect not only stored products in a cell (immunocytochemistry) but the synthetic machinery and the genes that control it (in situhybridisation), as well as the specific binding sites that act as receptors for a molecule following its release (in vitroautoradiography). The book provides a good introduction for beginners before looking in greater detail at more advanced material in selected areas. The volume highlights the importance of technique in gathering quantitative information. The book is divided into four sections: introductory material, image acquisition, image processing, and applications. The applications areas include quantitative immunochemistry, quantification of nerves and neurotransmitters and automated grain counting in in situhybridisation histochemistry.

Doctors Only: The Evolving Image of the American Physician (Contributions in Medical Studies)
Average Reviews:

I recently read this book and was amazed at Malmsheimer's insightful commentary on what it means to be a doctor in America. He transcends the prevalent petty finger-pointing of other authors on the subject to delve into the philosphical, historical, and even literary basis for his arguments. He explores fascinating avenues of thought in order to understand how the image of the American physician has been developed out of necessity for the doctor-patient relationship and reinforced by basic human nature, both on the part of patients, physicians, and others. Malmsheimer's work is a delightful work at all times, only slowing pace durng the examination of the American doctor in literature. This book is definite must-read for anyone considering the vocation of medicine or anyone living the life of the American doctor.

There's just something about a man who has no inkling that he's a real hero. Vidal is sensitive of his childhood and in his opinion will never be good enough for any woman, esp. Cassandra. It takes awhile for Cassandra to recognize her prejudice and to realize Vidal is a true hero.
